2023 BVI - July 25 - Gorda Sound to Cane Garden Bay
After checking out the most extreme northeastern part of Virgin, we headed back south and west towards Tortola. We decided to skip Anegada since it was just too much for our itinerary.
We stopped at Monkey Point on Guana Island to snorkel. This was a repeat visit of this well-known snorkeling mecca and we were not disappointed. Although we didn't see the large groupers we saw on the last visit, we did see cuttlefish, puffer fish (although hiding), urchins, and even a flounder trying to hide from us.
After the lunchtime snorkel and swim, we headed on through a rain storm to Cane Garden Bay, our destination for the evening. Here we picked up the last of the moorings and went onto shore for a pleasant dinner.

2023 BVI - July 24 - Trellis Bay to Virgin Gorda Sound

After a pleasant night in Trellis Bay, we motored through the Marina Cay and Scrub Island passage before doing some serious sailing to the "Dogs" Island. We had a mishap during the day mooring pickup that required some charter company intervention. With the problem resolved, we sailed on into Virgina Gorda Sound for a night just off the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock.

    I think it makes sense for workplaces and multi family dwellings as well. Maybe not installing stations, but outlets designated for level 1 charging in some places may be just enough to open up easy access to EV ownership to more people who do not have access to home charging. Designating some outlets for level 1 charging is so cheap to do that it just makes sense, certainly wouldn’t be very useful for a grocery store, etc. though.

    • @0e-michigan
      @0e-michigan Рік тому

      I totally agree! My first workplace charging was Level 2, but with a 20 mile round trip commute, I could have gotten that back in 6 hours, i.e. less than a full work day. While the AC charging power capability of onboard chargers in most vehicles is now escalating to 48 - 80 A (11.5 - 19,2 KW), Level 1 is still relevant in many cases. Orange Charger even makes a smart outlet focused on multi-dwelling units so that apartment and condo owners can offer EV charging without an expensive networked Level 2 system. ua-cam.com/video/k5ca_JcHUY0/v-deo.html

    In this video he was using a level 2, j1772 charger. That's like you use at home if attached to a 240 outlet. Ev go, electrify america, charge point and the others are DC fast chargers which are faster and cost more. You pretty much need to use them on a road trip. Keep in mind Bolts are about as slow of a fast charger there is. Charging etiquette say only use the 350 amp chargers if none of the slower ones are available. Leave them for the cars that can make use of their power output. You can only take in about 50 amps so a slower one is just as good for you.

    • @karlbloss
      @karlbloss Рік тому

      Good points! In this case, I chose to use a Level 2 charger since I had easy access to it and I was able to charge while running my errands. Certainly for longer road trips you would want to use DC Fast Chargers. You're absolutely right about using the right chargers. At an Electrify America station with 2 - 350 KW chargers and 2 -150 KW chargers, it's good etiquette to use one of the 150 KW chargers since the Bolt charges at about 50 KW peak and one should leave the higher power chargers for those vehicles that can benefit from those. Also, Electrify America often only has one charger with a CHAdeMO cable that Nissan LEAFs can use rather than the CCS cables other vehicles do. I can do another road trip video using DCFCs with the Bolt next time I need to take a longer trip.

  • @sammmyDaviS

    What others charge Bolts? Ev Go or what are the names? Electrify America or something 🤔

    • @karlbloss
      @karlbloss Рік тому

      The Bolt EV will charge at any Level 2 charger with a J1772 plug (as opposed to a Tesla Destination Charger; you need an adapter for the latter) and any DC Fast Charger with a CCS plug. The most prevalent charging networks in Michigan are ChargePoint, Electrify America, Red E, Shell Recharge, and Blink. You can look ahead to see which network a charger is on along your route using www.plugshare.com or the associated smartphone app. I recommend that app for finding charging, then use the charging network app to activate the charger. In this video I used the Shell Recharge app for that location (www.plugshare.com/location/270980).

    Your video was very helpful. Thanks. I'm getting a Torklift for my 2022 Kia Niro EV. My only concern, as I'm sure you've heard, is the impact to my warranty. Nice video. The 40 kWh is a nice car and I would recommend it.. Getting 150-160 on a full charge makes a road trip a much better time, while still leaving the car nimble. I think it is a sweet spot, especially after having a previous lower range leaf.

      Thanks for the note. I've decided to buy out my lease and then I have options. I might trade mine for a used 40 kWh when the depreciation on those drops. When I upgraded from the 24 kWh to the 30, I also noticed a huge difference in useable range.

  • @DaveLaur
    @DaveLaur 5 років тому

    Have you tracked your temperature bars. On my 2018, they are rather consistent. With RapidGate, I have determined most efficient charging happens when batt temps start around 85º F. daveinolywa.blogspot.com/2019/05/temperature-bars-on-leaf.html I think your drive was a bit conservative combined with QCs simply not being in the right spot. Good weather would have allowed the trip as well. Are all Chargepoints free there or is it just certain ones?

    • @karlbloss
      @karlbloss 5 років тому

      Yes, there were lots of variables, but that ChargePoint DCQC does enable quite a few trip options. For now, it's still free, presumably with the cost being absorbed by the adjacent Meijer. If it's like the ChargePoint stations in Kansas City, they're free for a while and then they pass on the cost to the end user. www.plugshare.com/location/187044
