I think its the halftime piano and the counter melody being in the same octave thats making it sound weird. The two are clashing and making it harder to hear each seperate melody.

How do you sample? What software you using? I tried bandlab but i feel maybe its too basic or am i wrong?
I use Fl Studio and there are a lot of good tutorials on sampling on youtube. I wouldn't say anything is too basic its more of what you like the most.

808 is off key but everything is good
couple notes if you wanted it to be more accurate; the first sample has reverb on it and the second one, ( Run ), has a PanMan by sound toys on it to make it go right to left. I also imagine it got exported and copy and pasted as if you leave it running the panning of the sample will switch throughout the track. Great job!
Actually just looked into it and the second sample is specifically from The Pharcyde - Runnin' , which sampled the Run DMC song, not the other way around. The Pharcyde one has the sample already panned in it
