Merrell Fankhausers Interview with Ed Cassidy of Spirit
whoa... I was there, '91 in Pismo/Annoyo Grande. What a treat, so many years later. Thanx again. Nicky, Merrell and Tim
Groovy Man ✌️🧔♀️ 🥁
So good great friends Rockaway beach Missouri sam shirl
Just listened to 'A Day In Paradise' (gone), so ..
A really great drummer
Great musician who composed 'Born To Be Wild' and a number of other Steppenwolf songs. He has quite an unusual collection of his own also. He is a very accomplished mountain climber as well. I'm so glad he is still with us; there is nobody as uniquely interesting as Mars Bonfire (Dennis Edmonton).
Oh his whole vibe was so cool...look and sound is timeless...Cassidy! BTW if Jet Black is still playing he is gotta be the next oldest!
Great band!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Merrell
"The Tiki Bar Is Open" John Hiatt.
Ed Cassidy looked like quite the character
Great sound for just three instruments. Love your voice Merrell.
Ed is so missed and the angels definitely got lucky when he joined up with Randy. Thanks for this awesome upload, guys. ☆♡☆♡☆♡
What a FANTASTIC Video,Man this is UNBELIEVABLE, Thank You,TAKE CARE AND STAY WELL AND SAFE, Walter B.Memphis.
Was Merrell ever popular? I heard his music at 15, so last year, and I loved his music.
Thank you.
HOW COME DAVID OR DAVE TRAUGHBER IS NO PLACE TO BE FOUND ON OR AROUND THIS SONG----HE'S THE ONE WITH BROWN HAIR SINGING IT-------WELL
R.I.P. Ed.You were the coolest.R.I.P. Randy aka; HERO.😔👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I met Ed in 1996. He was the sweetest man.
I'm so jealous. : )💜
He was way ahead of his time...now days there is a bald dude in every band and its cool to be bald...Ed paved the way
Real name, Dennis Edmonton.
Actually, Dennis McCrohan.
Sure do miss you old friend... Hope you and Dave are singing to all our family and friends in heaven....
Edward Claude Cassidy (May 4, 1923 - December 6, 2012) was an American jazz and rock drummer who was one of the founders of the rock group Spirit in 1967
thank god for public access.
Merrill thanks for the great interviews and your music. Thanks for the post.
The blurb for Branson says Chico was with Johnny Moore's Drifters in the early 60s. Mr. Vega is NOT LISTED on any roster of former Drifters.
he used a stage name not Chico Vega in the drifters
That's because there wasn't a "Johnny Moore's Drifters" in the 60's. In fact there was never a "Johnny Moore's Drifters" ever!
OK...Fankhauser is a complete idiot.
*It's kind of funny there isn't a single native Hawaiian in this video. Just a bunch of white people dressed in flowery clothes who didn't think of inviting indigenous people to their video. Priceless. ☉▵☉凸*
just please do not bring this racial garbage here , thank you
I can assure you he knows people and hangs out with people of Color(s) at his home in CA, and has non-whites in his life: Hawaiian, Asian, and Black girlfriends included. I've been to his house and he to mine several times. But, yes, the video might be a bit misleading, it was 1976.
thought he wrote it in '66 then it was released by the 'wolf in '68 - actually i had an lp not for release that i bought in an underground record shop in laguna beach w/mars's original version of "born to be wild" & "faster than the speed of life" dated 1966 - what's up here????
I met Randy, Ed and Scott Monahan when they played the Ranch Bowl in Omaha mid 1980's. I picked them up at the airport and took them to their radio interviews. They were all super nice. RIP Randy and Ed
How beautiful...
I didn't know Ed Cassidy had died until a few minutes ago. I'm kind of knocked or six by this. While I'm not a drummer "Mr Skin" was one of my biggest childhood influences in music. Shit
While waiting for the show of Spirit, Moby Grape, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, I walked over to a long haired hippie guy wearing scarfs at the lighting and sound stage to ask when Spirit would start. He was friendly and said they were coming up next. Sure enough, it was Randy California.

Spirit
Nice one Thankyou
I just learned of Ed's recent passing. He was easily one of Rock's best and most under rated durmmers...
RIP Ed Cassidy, you'll be missed
Wish you were still here to make some new songs..You were just taken from us way too soon bud..love ya ...
GREAT SONG !! GREAT CLIP !! Congrats. Yep .. very similar in parts .. many parts actually .. to Brian's legendary track from late 1962. Who's have ever thought - least of all BW - that when he penned "Catch A Wave" so long ago, that he'd STILL be inspiring guys like this band + hardcore surf-fans like me .. 50 years later ...
I've been trying to contact Jay Ferguson to interview him about the days with Spirit. He's doing the soundtrack work for NCIS/LA and a few weeks ago he used the keyboard riff from ICE, as background for a scene. Does anyone out there in Calif. know how to reach him?
It should be noted that the audio recording itself (the term "song" is too vague) dates from the 1976 solo album (it plays back quite fast here: I suspect PAL speedup.) And that the I'ao Needle, shown 2:40 in, is part of the West Maui volcano, a long way away from Wailua and Hana.
Yes, note the Band is called "Maui" and not "Hana". Merrell never said they are next to one another. I know him personally and he knows the geography of the State well.
thats chets shirt
Spirit and all of its reincarnations was one of the best bands ever. I know each band member thought it important to get into the R&R Hall Of Fame, so people would always remember the name. Their music was the tightest, their lyrics were intelligent and thoughtful. DAMN! What a great band. What a great man in Ed Cassidy.
love Merrell....meet in North Hollywood studio making the Doc Fankhauser album .. .
Very Cool Album!
Hi Chico & DeDe!! Its been ages....this is Leonor~~Jim and Janeen say Hi to you both..Here's wishing you Health and Happiness!....Lets stay in touch...818 836-0551... Love from the OConnells
Great to see a young Merrell singing blissfully live from his homeland of MU.
Happy Birthday Dave, Family was all we had. I love and miss you my brother. 8/12/11
Cool!
It has some parts that sounds very close to Catch a Wave by the Beach Boys
That was just so well done.
