BookTube NEWBIE Tag 2024: Joining BookTube in my 40s
Interesting review. I haven't read the book. I might at some point. I do have The Final Girl's Support Group so I will read it before any other Grady Hendrix books
The Final Girl’s Support Group was my first Hendrix and is probably my least favourite so far, but I still really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.
Im not super into film but I might need to read Silver Nitrate eventually. I’ve enjoyed a couple of her other books. I also really want to read the Paper Menagerie. I keep hearing incredible things about it.
I’d love to hear what you think about both of these if/when you do get a chance to read them.
My December was good in that I enjoyed the books I read. The amount I read dropped off. I only completed 2 books. I may complete one more today
2 (or 3) books is still very much a win, especially as you enjoyed them. 😊 I hope you have had a lovely Christmas and that you have a great New Year Stuart.
@@Bookishdowntime Very true. I am trying not to force my reading. Thank you. I hope you had a lovely Christmas, and you have a great New Year too.
I think Dunkelblum was quite a popular book here in The netherlands aswell, I've seen it around quite a bit. I've read one german book this year, I thikn the author is from Switzerland though,, adn that was Der halbbart by Charles Lewinsky, I had a great time reading that!
I have not heard of either of these. I will have to look them up.
@Bookishdowntime oops, this was meant as a comment another video that was before this one in my watch later list 😅 I guess it already moved on to your video when I typed it in. This probably made no sense to you 😅😅
🤣🤣 I was extremely confused but assumed it at least made sense to you 🤪
Ooh I’m so tempted to get a digital reading journal now. That looks like fun. This was great! 😊
The one I got was actually really cheap so not a huge loss even if I don’t use it all the time. 😁
I'm excited to read Deadhouse Gates this coming year, I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it (and others). I read Gardens of the Moon earlier this year and loved it; the world is just so interesting to me.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I have started Memories of Ice this month and that one is equally as good so far.
The book journal looks like it could be really helpful. My main goal was to read 50% from my shelves, I haven't done the calculations yet but I suspect I haven't achieved that so it'll be featuring again in my 2025 goals!
That’s a great goal, and one I could probably do with aiming for myself! Good luck with it in 2025. 🙂
I am with you in aspiring to be a better reviewer. I love the goals you have set for yourself for 2025, looking forward to see how you get on. Love the digital reading journal too, tempting to do something like that but I do prefer physical to digital. I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and that you also have a wonderful new year. 💖
Oh how I wish I could experience Earthsea for the first time again. I read it when I was quite young and haven't re-read it since but LeGuin will forever be a favourite. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on P. Djeli Clark's books, which I love, and also on Legends & Lattes, which I felt decidedly "meh" about.
I have not read any LeGuin yet so am looking forward to trying some of her works in 2025. I also have The Left Hand of Darkness which I may try and get to as well.
Love this. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 2025 spreadsheets from WithAli on Etsy which I've been using this year and enjoying -- I do love a pie chart. I am looking forward to book reviews from you. We read a lot of similar genres so I'm not much help for suggestions outside that. 🤣 I will absolutely make a video akin to this one and share my goals there, but I'm keeping quite a lot the same from 2024! Page/title count, readathons, read a book in French. These I'd like to repeat. I'm doing January focused on books I already own (...and hopefully more beyond). I'd also like to diversify geographically. I like the bingo card and may aim for a set number of translations as well.
I also love a pie chart and have a google doc where I will also log books for the stats it keeps for me 😆🙈 It’s not nearly as fancy or as comprehensive as the one from WithAli though, and I would be lying if I said I hadn’t been tempted by it I will be keeping an eye out for your goals video 😁
You read an impressive number of books this year. I didn't do well on my 2024 goals. My main one was a goal of reading 90 books. I am currently at 72. I chose 40 physical books I owned to read. I only read a few of them. In 2024 I am going to lower my book reading goal to around 70. I and I have a goal to read 25 physical books I own and 25 ebooks. I am going to make more of an effort on this goal than I did in 2024
72 is also an impressive number of books in a year, well done! 🙂 I read quite a few shorter graphic novels this year and that has really helped me achieve a much higher number. If you take those away then the total is closer to 80. Good luck with your 2025 goals.
@@Bookishdowntime Thank you. Eighty is really good too
Great video! I really enjoyed hearing your reading goals for 2025. My biggest goal is reading what I already own. In the past, I mostly read books from the library. But this year I went to several local book events and bought a lot of books to support local authors. So I'm going to set a small budget for next year, and I'm hoping to just read what I own for the next 6 months, since most of the book events I attend are in the fall. We'll see because there is one book coming out in January that I've already placed a hold on at the library.
I’m hoping that having to read 50% of my 2025 purchases will encourage me to buy less and focus more on what I already own. It can be so challenging then when there are so many good books coming out every year. 😆
I love this challenge! It's so easy to just keep buying new books versus reading what is already on the shelf. Subbed so I can follow along and maybe attack my own shelves!
Thank you for the sub. 💜 Good luck with reading off your own shelves if that is what you decide to do.
Oh my, such great selection of books! Babel gas also has been on my TBR for an embarrassing amount of time, hopefully we’ll get to it in 2025. As to Dowry of Blood I really hope you’ll enjoy it. It was such a hit for me this past November.
I am glad I am not the only one who still needs to get around to reading Babel. I am determined to get to it this year, but we will see how long that determination lasts 😬 I have heard such good things about A Dowry of Blood from so many people. I really do need to get to that one soon!
I read Desperation and the Regulators a week apart from each other...im a sucker for punishment 😂
I can’t decide whether that would be a great experience or a stressful one 😆 I might have to go back and re-read the Regulators at some point as I can’t really remember a huge amount about it.
Parable of the Sower is on my list for next year! Can’t wait after hearing your thoughts, but going to be a difficult one. No need to apologize for enjoying a heavy read. Art is supposed to make you feel.
I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to hearing what you thought 🙂
I read Happy Place last year and The Secret Society of Very Irregular Witches this year. Liked both a lot. I haven't read many werewolf books. Perhaps I should change that
I am hoping to read more werewolf books in the future, and probably just more creature horror in general. If you do pick up any good ones you’ll have to let me know.
New sub ty!
Thank you for subbing. It’s lovely to have you here 💖
I loved A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. I will have to bec cautious about reading The Reappearance of Rachel Price
I also loved A Good Girls Guide to Murder. 🙂 If you haven’t read it yet, I would also personally recommend Five Survive by Holly Jackson.
@Bookishdowntime Thank you. I added it to my TBR
Disappointing about Just Like Home. Just from how you talked about it caused my inner book goblin to rage.
It can be really frustrating when a book is just so different to what you thought you were getting. Especially when what you thought you were getting was the whole reason you picked up the book.
I haven't read any of these...no, that's not right. I did read The Princess Bride a few years ago. However, I actually think there is a lot of value in sharing books that were disappointments.
I agree. 🙂
Oh man. The House That Horror Built. I couldn’t with how many times the MC referenced the pandemic lol. Like faced with horror, and is still complaining about limited seating at restaurants lol
Yes! That was one of the many, many things that annoyed me about her.
My most disappointing books of 2024 are Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, Normal People by Sally Rooney, Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, and The Paleontogist by Luke Dumas
I have not read any of these but I do have Carmilla and The Palaeontologist on my radar. Fingers crossed I enjoy them more than you did, but I have heard mixed reviews about both.
If you enjoyed The Appeal (and The Christmas Appeal), I would recommend The Examiner by Janice Hallett. This one felt the most similar to The Appeal books, but I felt like it packed more of a punch.
Oh thanks for the rec. I have added that to my TBR. I did read The Twyford Code after The Appeal but didn’t enjoy that one as much.
Too bad about the Familiar. I still gotta read 9th House and Hellbent! The Princess Bride as a novel has a different kind of tone/humor than the movie does IMO. I enjoyed the book but still prefer the movie.
The Princess Bride movie just has such a fantastic cast. And the tone is definitely different.
Completely agree with you about The Familiar. I did finish it because I was hoping it would be more fantastical or I would become more attached to the characters, but nope. Thanks for sharing these.
This makes me feel much better about the fact I didn’t force myself to power through it.
I'm with you on A Natural History of Dragons, it was ok, but didn't live up to the hype I kept seeing from other BookTubers.
I am happy to hear there is at least one other person who thinks it was just ok. 😁 I really did want to love it.
Great job! It’s hard to talk about books when it disappointing. I love reading The Princess Bride, but I understand why seeing the movie first would kind of ruin it. One of the few movies that did better than the book. My most disappointing book was Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Aria. The cover had me excited, the killer was a disappointment. Very easy to predict.
Thank you. 😊 I have not heard of Dead Dead Girls before. Reading the synopsis it does sound like it should be a great read, but it’s a shame it was easy to predict.
OMG Nghi Vo's "The Brides of High Hill," I don't even have to check my spreadsheet - that book devastated me and it was entirely down to expectations. Book 5 in a series I've loved all along (4-5 stars for every installment) and I landed on a 2.5 star for this one. Had it been first, I wouldn't have continued the series.
I remember you talking about that one in a video. 2.5 stars to the 5th book in a 4-5 star series is quite possibly the definition of a disappointing read!
I’ve been wanting to read None of This is True. Sounds so good! 😊
I would love to hear your thoughts on it if you do get around to reading it.
I love Holly Gibney, too! Great answers. Thank you so much for doing the tag!
Thank you for creating the tag, it was fun to take part in it. 😁
I want to read Legendborn. My 3 favorite books from November were The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, All Hallows by Christopher Golden, and The Night Parade by Ronald Malfi
Ronald Malfi is an author I really want to try but he has so many books I’m struggling to decide which to pick up.
@@Bookishdowntime In the book I read, they listed his books. I was surprised he has written so many books. He is very prolific
None of This Is True sounds fascinating. 100 % two wrongs don’t make a right.
Looking at the reviews it does seem to be a pretty polarising one. Well worth checking out though in my opinion.
Ha, great vid. I like the way you interjected that correction during the edit phase. I never really thought of making adjustments in this nature, but it really went over well. Nicely done! Now I also read the synopsis and book summaries. Sometimes it's accurate and sometimes it's not, but I don't think it derogatively affects my reading experience enough to stop reading them.
Thank you 🙂 It is such an easy way to add in anything I forgot to say, or that I didn’t think I was clear on. I know a lot of people like to go into books completely blind, but I am definitely someone who needs to know what I am getting myself in to 😆
@Bookishdowntime agreed, i read the covers too!!

I'm also really excited for the new Grady Hendrix book. He writes women especially well (at least in the books of his I've read so far). I'm also planning to read to the new Sangu Mandanna
I agree about Grady Hendrix. I think he especially writes young women well. My Best Friends Exorcism was very well done.
So many books to look forward to! I hesitate to look at what's coming up next year as I already have so much on my shelf that is still unread, but I know I won't be able to resist.
It’s so hard finding the balance between being excited about the new books and actually reading the ones we already have! I know I won’t get to all of these books next year, but it’s nice to at least know what is out there 😄
I haven't heard of most of these! 💜 I am excited to learn more about horror from you - it's something I'm kind of dipping into but isn't a go-to and isn't a genre I know the authors very well in. ARCs are up for the Buffalo Hunter Hunter though! I am really excited for that one. First half of 2025 releases I'm pumped for include (to name a few) "Harmattan Season" by Tochi Onyebuchi and a few new installments in series I love: "Days of Shattered Faith" by Adrian Tchaikovsky and "The Martian Contingency" by Mary Robinette Kowal.
City of Last Chances is available as an e-book from the library and I keep meaning to check it out as I have heard such good things about that series. Riot Baby is another one that is on my TBR but I haven’t read anything by Tochi Onyebuchi yet… the synopsis for Harmattan Season sounds intriguing. 💖
@@Bookishdowntime Both Riot Baby & Goliath knocked my socks off (in different ways, for different reasons); definitely suggest checking out Onyebuchi. "City of Last Chances," well, it's a weird series so far; I've heard book 1 likened to Les Miserables and book 2 likened to MASH; you can tell it's the same author but the books are very very different... yet cohesive. I don't know how Tchaikovsky writes so many books so quickly but I have yet to read one that I really didn't like.
Oh interesting, that actually makes me even more interested in picking up that first book. I’ve only read the one Tchaikovsky, Children of Time, and really enjoyed it. It’s also another series on my never ending list that I actually need to finish 🙈
Some interesting books. I can see why you look forward to getting them. I love the cover of They Bloom at Night. I wish I could offer some suggestions about upcoming Sci Fi books. Unfortunately, I don't read that many Sci Fi books anymore. And I am not good at learning about upcoming books.
I tend to read more backlist books than new releases to be honest and it’s only in the last couple of years that I have started to actively look out for upcoming releases.
New to your channel. Arrived via M-J’s channel. Loved this. I’m a bit of a nerd too 😂. Look forward to getting to know you better. Good luck with your channel 😊
Thank you for stopping by 😊 Nerds unite! 😆
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new Grady Hendrix!
I’m worried I might be going into it with my expectations a little high, but I am just really excited for it. 😁
Great video! I love how creative it is! Best of luck to you on Booktube!
Thank you 💖 And thank you for watching.
Hello! Just discovered your channel through MJ. Wishing you great success with your new channel.
Thank you so much!! 💖
Sounds like great books. I'm going to have to look into that first one (the historical fiction...I'll have to go back and get the title). I haven't heard anything about it here, so it might now be slated for release in the US, but I could always get it from Blackwells.
It looks like you will be able to get it through Barnes & Noble.
That is one big book. The only books I know I will be reading in December are The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore and A Court Of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Mass. They are both for book clubs.
I have never read anything by Sarah J. Mass. Did you read ACOTAR, and what did you think of it?
@@Bookishdowntime I really liked it. If you are interested, i put my StoryGraph review of it below. I rated it 4 stars. This story is told in the first person by Feyre who is human. There are humans and fae In the world of the book. Feyre lives a couple of days journey from the fae lands. There is a wall separating human lands from fae lands. Feyre's family (Feyre's father and two older sisters) was once well to do. But they fell on hard times a few years back. They only survive because of Feyre's hunting skills. She needs to kill prey to provide meat and to get pelts that she sells to get money for other necessities. The story starts with Feyre hunting in the woods during a winter day. A deer comes in range of her bow. Before she can shoot the deer, a huge wolf appears. Feyre kills the wolf and the deer. She skins the wolf and takes the pelt and the dear deer back to her family. Not long after, a very angry fae comes to Feyre's family's cottage. The wolf Feyre killed was actually a fae who had shifted to wolf form. Feyre admits to the angry fae that she killed the wolf. As punishment, she has to spend the rest of her life in fae lands. The angry fae is Tamlin who is one of the Fae High Lords. The story goes from there. This book is a romantasy. Only the second I have read after Fourth Wing. There were a series of chapters early in the book where I didn't feel any threat to Feyre. They almost felt cozy. Once the book ramped up, the stakes got really high. It got very tense. Feyre was a believable heroine (some suspension of disbelief is necessary, but that is to be expected in a fantasy novel). I liked how the romance developed. There was impressive world building. Mostly the fae world is gradually revealed. There is one chapter that was info dumpy. There were some brutally violent scenes in the latter part of the book. The sex was mild. Not graphic at all. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a romantasy and who doesn't have a problem with the brutally violent scenes. I'm glad I finally read a Sarah J. Maas book. I already bought the sequel A Court of Mist and Fury.
Thanks for sharing. I am not sure I will ever get around to reading it but I’m always interested to hear reviews.
