Fly Fishing Oregon's Metolius River "Headwaters" in Fall 2024!!!
Fly Fishing the Headwaters of the Metolius River in Oregon! Fall of 2024.
This is before the Headwaters closed for the season!
Early on in my UA-cam Channel, I published several Metolius River videos. Maybe too many! So, I took a break from the Metolius River starting Mid 2022. Now I finally have returned with a new Metolius River video! And I can't be more pumped!
I zeroed in on one of my favorite times of the year to hit this difficult river.....the fall! Not too hot, not too cold, and the crowds have thinned out! Since I can never get too much Chubby Chernobyl use, I have always loved to hit the Metolius during the Golden Stonefly hatch. The hatch starts mid summer and goes to early fall. Enjoy the video, and if you have any questions, send them to me in the comments. Also, underneath the timestamps below, are several UA-cam links to prior Metolius River videos.
TIMESTAMPS
00:00 Intro
2:36 First Small(ish) Fish
3:54 Where These Brown Trout Coming From?
5:44 Nice Rainbow For The Headwaters!
7:34 I Didn't Know This Would Be My Last Fish :(
8:26 Fade Into The Sunset Outro
10:16 You Guys Wanna Hear The Scream?
Flies used were the "Chubby Chernobyl" and an occasional "Rubber Legged Stimulator" and caddis.

On this 3-day Adventure, I'll be spending some time around the Steens Mountain in Oregon! * Day 1 = Alvord Desert. * Day 2 = Blitzen River. (Blitzen is short for Donner und Blitzen River btw). * Day 3 = Wildhorse Lake. This is the type of adventure(s) that I have always wanted to film for my channel. But of course, time is always limited! So a lot of my videos are more simple (daytrip) fly-fish...

I Entered a Fly Fishing MATRIX. For this video I added some creative special effects just to have a little fun and also teach myself some new editing techniques (using the Motion Array website). I needed to try some new stuff because a lot of my videos a so similar to each other. It was a lot of fun, but adding a lot of effects isn't something I'm going to continue doing much of. It's just the reality of this river. But I did pretty good this time. Next time, I want to explore more and not film anything. Try to focus on finding new areas. Metolius River Fly Fishing in SPRING (March Browns Hatch)!!!
Outstanding videography, Jeff.
Dude, I dig that you stick to what you do. A cinematic experience that gives me vibes that I'm out there with you. Thanks for the taking me on a journey!
No prob my dude!
My brother just visited that area without a rod and he can't stop talking about it, I need to check it out sometime
That would be torture to not have a fly rod!!! But yeah, you would really enjoy this river and some other ones nearby.
There's some good sized browns in Lake Cr., headed up to Suttle. Too bad its nearly impossible to fish where its not private. But i've also caught them well down below Candlestick. Luckily the bulls do a good number on them down there. Thats my theory at least, cause two that i've caught on nymphs had a bull chasing them.
Yeah, they seem to migrate from Suttle. A rumor that I heard was that there used to be a metal grate that prevented downstream migration, but it's currently damaged. So that could be why we are starting to pick up a few more browns. I'll take it!
That's a fun hatch to fish on that river. Great video!
Definitely for sure! It's very satisfying to see a nice fish roll up on a chubby and smash it. Especially on the Metolius River.
No place I'd rather be than the mighty Metolius!
Man I wish I lived somewhere as beautiful and solitary as this
I’ve fished that river many times. Definitely some decent rainbows and cutties when you fish it right. Thanks for sharing the video.
I love that area and spent quite a few nights there myself when I lived in Salem. Your channel is awesome! Fishing, backpacking, photography, 2A, Oregon. Too cool, subscribed. You’re a Veteran, business owner and seem like a really cool guy - living the real American Dream. Thanks for the content, and thank you for your service ❤
I’m sorry I got a hook on my top eyelid but I blinked it out it didn’t really hurt-
Nice Video Jeff. Keep 'em coming.
Much appreciated! Got a couple vids in the works!
Osprey will fix or replace that zipper no questions asked lifetime warranty 😊👍🏻
For sure! I should do that soon. I've used the All Mighty Guarantee before. It's super nice.
Outstanding Supporting thumbnail man, your content is awesome!
Thanks a bunch! I was stoked to use that image for the TN! Thx for watching.
What a beautiful place to explore, and that lake looked like a great spot to 🎣 Those elk calls were wild. Amazing video! New SUBSCRIBER!
Thanks a bunch. I just watched your hooked in the finger video. Super gnar! I subbed back btw.
That’s such a beautiful area. Great video!
Thanks, definitely beautiful! I was bummed to hike out with how nice the second day was! I just saw that you have a new video up, I'm excited to check it out. I have it saved to watch on my big screen tonight!
@@dynamicphotography_ awesome!
When you’re fishing a lake with a fly rod it’sbeneficial to bring some nymphs with, also is R2-D2 a camera if so, how do I find one?😂 awesome video by the way!!
Definitely should have ran some nymphs. I had a couple with me. I get a little too stubborn with the dry flies. I missed a couple strikes. And the R2 is just a good luck charm, not an actual camera or anything. He's more of a sidekick out there! Thanks for watching!
Osprey offers a lifetime guarantee, if you ever want to get that broken zipper fixed! If they can’t fix it, they’ll replace it!
@@nancygeorge4030Yeah, I should probably use it. I've used the "All Mighty Guarantee" before. It's a good program.
@@dynamicphotography_dry fly or die 💪🏽
absolutely beautiful photos of that lake man so cool to see i shoot on a pentax K3 ive had for 10 years but still takes great shots
Awesome! I dig doing photography when I'm out there. But it adds a lot of weight to the pack. Especially the large lens and tripod! 😂
@@dynamicphotography_ yeah that's honestly why I stopped carrying it around fishing the extra weight of everything is just to much it destroys my back I have degenerative disk disease so extra weight on my back throughout the day really messes me up I've had to reduce the weight in my steelhead and salmon bag several times to reduce the impact
I had the same knife. I replaced it with a Mora floating knife.
Cool, I just ran a search on that floating knife! Looks pretty good. Might be great knife to put on my boat!
Man that looks like fun. I've just put together my first backpacking setup. I can't wait to find that lake!
Right on! Yeah, backpacking and staying overnight up at high lakes is one of my favs! Have fun. 👍
Backpacking up into the Oregon mountains is always a blast!! 😎
It took me several trips to find that lake. There is no trail. I camped at that exact spot last year. My only complaint is you can here the highway in the distance.
Those are the smallest fish i ever seen caught with a rod...wow
I can trust what you're saying is TRUE because it is apparent that you know "small things".
Nice video Jeff. Great photog. BUT....is it just me??? I'm curious about what seems to be your "signature move" of aggressively tossing your rod when landing a fish. Never have I seen that move.
Not sure why. I've been doing that for many years before both UA-cam & social media. It just happens. Luckily, I've never damaged a rod throwing it. But I do keep a back-up rod in The Stealth just in case. Thx for watching!
Was wondering when you were going to post again! Another awesome edit!
Thanks! The new backpacking video is out also!
Goonies never say die! I love it!
It's always a good time when you post something new!
Great rock stack kill. “Not today hippie!”
I know where there's some stacks if you're down to smash!
What brand is the net you are using in this video
It's not labeled with any name on it. But I got it from Sportsman Warehouse. I looked online just now, and it looks like it is the: "Measure Net Hand Net"... From their online catalog. Thanks for watching.
That is some beautiful water!
Absolutely! 💯
Savage!!! Great to see you back in the game!
Many thanks! 😎
4:51 😂
Ha ha, always good to smash one. 👍
Goonies Never Say Die!
Hey! Great video. I hope to hit a couple of creeks/rivers as we head up the coast from San Francisco in a couple of weeks. Having never fished for the searun variety could you share what weight rod/line you were using? Any tips on where to go, without revealing the honey holes, would be appreciated. Just a general area like around Brookings, Tillamook or Newport will set me on a path. Thanks and appreciated. Keep making UA-cam shorts.
Thanks! I would recommend a 5wt for Sea Runs. And for the water, most rivers and creeks that directly connect to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon will get some Sea Runs. The Northern part of the State is probably better. Fall is a good time. Have fun!
When do sea run start?
Probably about a month ago in limited numbers. September & October should be good around times of fall rain.
Jeff, Appreciate the videos and effort put in by you. I am new to Bend, since March and struggling to land anything on the Metolious. Appreciate any insight on setups to use.
Set-Up insights for me are very limited. I use a 9ft 5wt budget Orvis and toss dryflies. I like stimilators, chubbys, caddis, and mayflies. On the Metolius I often use fluorocarbon tippet instead on nylon because the trout are smarter here than other rivers. I'm a fan of dryfly powder flotant. Other guys like throwing nymphs though. They do well with stoneflies, hair ears, prince, peasant tail nymphs I believe. On the Metolius, you have to use extreme stealth and move frequently. You have to be okay with no fish the first couple of visits and then start to get a better feel for how tricky it is. More experience = more fish.
Nice vids 👍👍 Would a 9’ 6wt (med fast) be too much rod for these river searuns ? Cheers
THX! Nope, not at all. 6wt would be very comfortable. Cheers.
those are some nice fish! Ive had my eye on that creek for awhile now, maybe its time I test my luck as well!
Thanks! I wish I had time to buzz over there. Get sum!
@@dynamicphotography_ I camp/fished and caught tons of beautiful trout! Cheers!
Hi Jeffrey. I have enjoyed your videos over the years, and have a window in my work this coming week (July 31 - Aug 4), and I want to head to Bend to explore the rivers. Hoping the fires will allow this. Can you recommend any rivers to target, and specifically a general area of the Metolious? Any intel would be awesome! Thanks in advance.
For the Metolius, I would branch out because it will probably be crowded with the weekend crowds. If the crowds are not too bad, the areas around the campgrounds would be convenient. Otherwise, drive downstream and use fisherman pullouts on the side of the road. Also, you can check with staff at the Fly Shop at the Camp Sherman market. Buy some supplies from them though if you could. Near Bend, you can drive to the Fall River. There's a fly shop across the street from Sunriver. There's also nearby Tumalo Creek and Whychus Creek for lite fly fishing for small rainbows. Have fun.
What’s up with that trout ‘release’😂 🍆
lets gooo jeff! always looking forward to watch your videos!
Hey thanks! I've been slacking this summer (too busy with real life stuff). Heading out sometime soon, just not sure what yet.
Why do you slam your rod down like that haha 😂 Great video!
Not sure why. I've always done that, even way before UA-cam. Just excited. I carry a back-up for when I break one.
Is there lots of camp spots around the lake by the water ? Going backpacking/ fishing there for my first time ever.. thank you.
There is a limited number of dispersed sites. Best to go midweek honestly to be safe. And a PERMIT is required.
@@dynamicphotography_ right on thank you yeah I got my permit supposed to leave Friday morning early, but I found a new place I might go, less crowded.
I fish this river often the upper stretch of the river is spawning ground for multiple species. I have noticed after the fires the river has changed
