I create these videos to learn and share accurate historical information about Billy the Kid and New Mexico's ghost towns. By focusing on authenticity, I aim to bring the state's vibrant past to life, honoring its cultural heritage and making it engaging for future generations.
The Legend of Billy the Kid outlaw emerges | Part 3 documentary Silver City Oleans Club
The Legend of Billy the Kid continues through the vibrant atmosphere of Silver City was Mr. Dyer's Oleans Club. What set this saloon apart was its most unusual patron - a live tiger. The presence of such an exotic animal in a frontier town saloon speaks to the unique and sometimes bizarre nature of life in the Old West.
This glimpse into Billy the Kid's life in Silver City reveals a multifaceted individual, challenging the one-dimensional outlaw image often portrayed in popular culture. His participation in horse races, love for reading, and the colorful environment of Silver City all contributed to shaping the complex character who would later become one of the most famous figures of the American frontier.
Attending School
In 1874, at around 14 years old, Henry began attending the one-room public school in Silver City. The school opened on September 14, 1874, though Henry likely started a bit later due to his mother's death just days after the school year began.
His Teacher
Henry's teacher was Mary Richards, who remembered him fondly years later. She described him as a "scrawny little fellow with delicate hands and an artistic nature" who was "always willing to help with the chores around the school-house".
Classroom Environment
The school was modest, with 29 children in Henry's class. They had no desks, just tables and chairs, and used slates and slate pencils for writing. The children helped with tasks like filling the water bucket and keeping the fire going in the open fireplace.
Billy's Personality
Henry was noted to be no more troublesome than any other boy in the mining camp. He had a good relationship with his teacher and even participated in a minstrel show to raise money for the school.
End of Schooling
Henry's time in school was relatively short-lived. After his mother's death and his stepfather's abandonment, he found himself on his own. By age 15, he had turned to petty crime, stealing cheese and later clothes and a gun. This marked the beginning of his path towards becoming the infamous outlaw known as Billy the Kid.
Billy's brief time in school in Silver City represents one of the few periods of stability in his short and tumultuous life. It offers a glimpse into the potential he had before circumstances and choices led him down a different path.

I am not always a fan of AI (understatement here) but I do recognize I like how it enables one to get a more vivid idea of how it could feel like, back in the day. I appreciate your efforts, especially with the genealogy research and the personalized maps, which give us more proximity with the protagonists of the story. Now there are a couple of things I wanted to address for this particular episode: -I think the quote about the 'scrawny little fellow' is from Mary, not Emma. -Also, unless Dyer had a circus, which I really doubt, I think the TIGER in question is simply the nickname of the times for Faro. Neighborhoods with several gambling halls with Faro dealers were called Tiger Town, or Tiger Alley. The reason for this was that the early card backs had a Bengal Tiger drawn on them. Playing Faro was called 'bucking the tiger'. The lost finger comment may simply be one example of the tongue-in-cheek, pun-loving writing style of many journalists of the era, if we think of the meaning of 'hand' when talking about card games.
I appreciate your reply. As for the Quote, "'scrawny little fellow' is from Mary, not Emma." You very well might be right. In fact, I can't even locate where I placed that information to check.. Guess I'm getting inundated with filed and folders on my desk top. lol. As far as the Dyer and owning a real Tiger, your conjecture is enlightening yet unsubstantiated. You could be correct as well. I would like to think he was an eccentric man. "Tom Mullett, " loosing his index finger I found out this morning from reading the June Herald 1875 was a blacksmith in Silver City. Not that that has any bearings one way or the other. Just nice to put a face or occupation with a name... Thanks for the new thoughts on "Tiger"
@@HistoricallyCorrect I know the flooding feeling 🙂Putting a face on those characters is what I love most. You can find a few articles online that will explain the Faro/Tiger connection, which, like you, I cannot locate right now. One last thing I forgot to mention, I for one believe in the possibility of Billy being inspired by the she-pirate... Have fun on your Billy journey, like so many of us do!🐯

@TomDavidMcCauley you might not like AI, that's ok and understandable, but these take me 7 days to make. What part made you dislike it?
❤ i love it!
This could have been more historically accurate. A few things stated were a bit inaccurate. There was a lifeboat drill before Titanic left Southsmpton. The Californian was trapped by ice and unlikely to bee the ship that could have come to her aid. Mr. Ismay had some influence but the Captain made the big decisions on speed. Captain EJ Smith was from Stoke on Trent originally so he would have had a different English accent from the Midlands from England. I wish that would be researched further and changed to the correct regional idiom.
Billy & Bowling, not something I thought I'd ever hear about! Now if only there was a photograph!? We've already had croquet! 🤣🤔🎳
This is quite the shock to me as well!!! I recently acquired the Silver City Mining Life newspaper from the Silver City Museum and going through it month by month as I'm working my videos. If I was 13 or 14 years old, and had a bowling ally on the street i lived on, I'd be frequenting the bowling ally and the rest of the attractions. *S*

I have been BTK researcher for 40-50 years. I have hundreds of books, magazine articles, newspaper articles, interviews, census records, hospital records, cemetery records, 1000's of miles of travel, CCC interviews, ship records, Ireland/England records, private interviews, one on one interview with Salazar's grandson, etc. etc. Maybe I missed something!
Yes maybe you have. Never believe in hearsay, he said, she said, im an historian and i base my facts off of documented proof only, unlike the myriads of BTKs books without documentation. Im doing my own reseach unbiased because i could care less which way the course goes, but i must know myself.

@@NewMexicoCountrySongs The character seen in the famous portrait at the Louvre is not that of Lisa del Giocondo or Mona Lisa, but that of Isabelle d'Aragon and Sforza, the daughter of the King of Naples Alphonse II d'Aragon. Isabelle married her cousin Gian Galeazzo Sforza, the heir to the Duchy of Milan, to consolidate the ties between the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Milan. So, it is the portrait of a princess and not a commoner. Leonardo da Vinci was at that time in the service of Ludovico Sforza, the uncle of Gian Galeazzo who exercised regency at the court of Milan. Isabelle's young husband disappeared prematurely at the age of 25 without being able to exercise power, allegedly assassinated on the orders of his uncle. German historian Maike Vogt-Luerssen tells us that after her widowhood, Isabelle and Leonardo formed a secret couple and had 5 children. Therefore, it was his beloved's portrait that Leonardo da Vinci painted, which explains why he took it to Amboise in France and kept it until the end of his life, like keeping a family photo nowadays. There was thus an emotional connection with Isabelle that did not exist with Lisa del Giocondo, whose portrait was only a commission. The research I myself have done on the landscape indicates that it is based on an authentic location, which would confirm Maike Vogt-Luerssen's theory, as it undoubtedly pays homage to Isabelle d'Aragon's family origins. It seems obvious to me that the identity of the character in this portrait has been confused between an actually received commission, that of the silk merchant's wife, and the portrait of Leonardo's partner, which is the one seen today at the Louvre. All of this is probably now well known to the so-called specialists of Leonardo da Vinci, who do not want to acknowledge the inconsistencies of the official version because they have spent their entire lives defending a version they now know to be outdated. As Mark Twain said, "It is easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled." www.kleio.org/de/geschichte/renaissance/monalisa/ml_fakten/ www.equinoxmagazine.fr/2021/11/28/la-joconde-serait-catalane/

My dad's family had a holiday home(shack), near Lee-on-Sea on the north east bank of The Thames. The guy who owned the one next door, was a retired Texas Ranger. Who told my dad about The Lincoln County War, where he met Billy The Kid, who he described as a, "Syphalitic, little, son of a b*tch, who shot most of his victims in the back!"
That story still amazes me, so that I'm within three degrees of Billy The Kid!
I think the story your dad was told is about as realistic as the mythology that says the Kid killed 21 men. The reality is far different.
