One thing I didn't properly get into in the video is that, when the discourse is dominated by the most extreme takes, that's what newer players have to work with when they're trying to learn what's going on. When I first came across genning discourse, it was Certain Notable People condemning other players for cheating, and most of the responses to them being the "everyone does it, why would anyone actually put all that time in" stuff that I complained about here. As a newer player and a person who generally leans in favour of following rules, it was a lot to take in. My first thought was: "wait but that obnoxious wolf guy actually has a point this time, why are they acting like he doesn't, maybe I should actually hear him out here". And my second thought was: "if this really is a community where most people think that following the rules is a ridiculous choice, then maybe I don't want to be part of it". That's the part I alluded to in the video where I thought about quitting for a moment. Turns out there's a lot more nuance to this issue, I did not gotta hand it to that wolf guy, and I can just play the way I think is best with minimal worries. But that sure wasn't the first impression I got. More thoughtful and honest discourse -> easier for new players to get informed and figure out the best choices for themselves. And like I said, I think a lot of the talk since Worlds has been a step in the right direction.
