Dev Talk & Tea - Hello Again
Переглядів 3122 роки тому
Hi there, my name is Rhianne and I'm a game developer who likes to create cosy and fun content. I used to do something called Dev Talk & Tea when I started working in games but I only made 3 episodes before becoming overwhelmed. Now I'm ready to take another stab at it and use my free time to create relaxing content about game development, my day-to-day, and general nerdiness. SOCIAL LINKS HERE...
How does stuff like NDA work if you occasionally work from home? I was always curious about that.
I don't usually comment on videos, but this was so well made and incredibly helpful! I've just switched from a career as a 3D artist, and am now learning narrative design. Thank you for making videos like these! They're insightful and encouraging.
@@bugoosoogoo aw thank you so much I'm glad it was helpful ❤️
I have a BFA in animation (storyboard artist), but I've been interested in pivoting to video games. Narrative design has always peaked my interest, this was very insightful :)
Thank you for watching! Video games also need storyboard artists too :)
Im gonna try do this but pass on veilguard
I've been really enjoying Veilguard! But either way, I hope you enjoy the books! :)
Lot of people hating on it. I dunno I might give it a go @@RhianneMurphy
One thing that a narrative designer has to learn is to get to the point when making UA-cam videos.
In the words of Bane "What a lovely lovely voice" Ahaha thankyou for the tips tho Quite helpful
Thank you for watching!
I have always wanted to LARP but I had severe nerve damage. Luckily PT has meant I'm able to walk around now, so I really want to try it. I have pirate costumes, so I want to be a pirate, but I don't understand the different factions/characters/races, etc.
After debating for YEARS on whether or not I wanted to go to Empire, I finally decided that 2025 is going to be the year that I go and this video just made me so much more excited for it!!!
Woohoo! I hope you enjoy it!
too bad that Veilguard is such dog s%it.....
Idk why this was suggested to me, but it looks absolutely fascinating! Have a subscription :)

The video was really awesome, one thing I would recommend is making your thumbnail more eye-catching.
"Dont read the wiki" Me: *laughing in pathological obsession*
Don't worry, you're not alone haha!
"the game's industry is quite small" uhh... what, are you new around here? 😅
You'd be surprised! Here in the UK you're usually only one person removed from another person in the industry - everyone knows everyone.
Awesome video! Very informative, and the cozy vibes are great.
Oh, these were on our reading list! Thanks for the guide :D
Nice one! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
I loved The Calling. Really gives a great sense of the oppressiveness and claustrophobia of the deep roads. Also Kell and Hafter are absolute BAFMs
@@zenmastermtl the amount of times I cried reading that book... 😭
My recommended Reading/Playing order: 1. The Stolen Throne 2. The Calling 3. Dragon Age: Origins OR 1. Dragon Age: Origins 2. The Stolen Throne 3. The Calling (Optional: Replay DAO) 4. Dragon Age 2 5. Asunder 6. The Masked Empire 7. Dragon Age: Inquisition 8. Last Flight 9. Tevinter Nights
Thank you for this, I just started with The Stolen Throne. 💜
@@macbooker I hope you enjoy!!
Very good, indeed. Stories in games are still not taken very seriously. But to be fair, same goes for movies, increasingly. Style over substance, baby.
Hey folks, i know this video has some mixing issues with the audio - sorry about that! Hopefully auto captions help a bit and I'll try and mix the sound better in future episodes 😊
I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!
The music is too loud relative to the dialogue. It's really difficult to hear you.
Lovely video! <3
estas bien bonita
Damn gurl, you a baddie like fo real tho
So you are the game experience DEI infuser?!
Very honest, lovely video. Thanks for your insight:)
TLDR: Put a chick in it and make her g ay and lame
So Cosy! I love Empire and I am missing it a lot this long dark. Are you attending any player events while we wait for next season?
Ah TY :) I don't think I will just because I have too much on my plate atm.
What advice would you give on building my portfolio. I have so much material I worked on and I have no idea how to really put them together. I don't want to just throw it in google docs and use that as a link as I don't think companies will look at it
Definitely recommend getting a website - any free domain will do (wix, square space etc...). I'd encourage you to look at other writer/narrative designer portfolios for inspo <3
I was a teacher for seven years, but had the opportunity to be lead writer/narrative design on a game for just over two years. We raised a lot of money, and partnered with ubisoft, and the game just launched on Epic Games this August, but my contract ended and I've had trouble finding work since. It's really weird because I'm from a completely different field, but I'm in love with making games now, and it sucks trying to find someone who'll take me with only two years' experience, despite actually shipping a game. If you have any tips or videos on how to pitch yourself as a writer in the industry, it'd be much appreciated. Subbed and will eagerly await the next installation!
Thank you so much! I'm sorry to hear about your trouble, you're not alone! Narrative can be such a niche and unfortunately jobs are pretty thin right now :( All I can say is keep writing, keep your portfolio up to date and keep applying for whatever you can. <3
which game?
I sit in the same issue. Although the game didn't shit, I did a lot of work on a game called Ark Legends. If it is in English, it was me. I did everything on the world building and lore as well. And now, I cannot find work writing at all. I have no idea how to start making a portfolio and taking the work I've done into scripting to show how it was implemented since everything was gone when I left
@@DBallyousee That sounds really frustrating, I'm sorry to hear that :( as far as portfolios, website that link to games you've worked on and short excerpts of your writing are good things to start with.
This does make me wonder how the developers behind Mass Effect and The Witcher handled this kind of information, since those games had wildly divergent plot branches not just within individual titles but between installments. I'm appreciating just how much work those teams put into keeping the wheels from falling off of their narratives.
This is something I've studied a fair bit, but when you mentioned Powerpoint, I could only react with a "...oh, that does make sense, doesn't it?" I feel like organizing plot and dialogue flow not having an industry standard (in the way that film scripts are standardized, if such a thing is even possible in games) is one of the big stumbling blocks for ND as an art form, but I somehow never realized I had a Pretty Good option already installed on my computer. I am very glad that UA-cam randomly recommended this for me out of nowhere. My only critique is that you've got a compelling background character who was greatly underutilized and could certainly carry their own subplot. Definitely worth developing further!
Rhianne, please make the audio louder, I like the video but it's hard to hear
@@alexpotterson9119 noted! Thank you for the feedback!
My thoughts on this are you speak of those who are looking to take up this role as a career maybe and as an Indie dev myself I know there are many roles that we must become competent at as disciplines. However, Narrative Design is certainly a key role that binds many projects together and is not talked about often enough. This was an informative tea, no chalk but talk. appreciated the knowledge share, new sub.
I'm in my 60s, with lots of camping, D& D, and cosplay experience you have inspired me to look into LARP here in the USA. Your creativity, bravery, and cleverness are refreshing and inspiring. As a woman, of a certain age, I am used to being overlooked and ignored. Roll play is a place I can be as big or as small as I like, according to my character and the collaborative story. The gaming community is more welcoming than it has ever been, and most of the time a safe place for those who are discovering their real selves, or trying to find a tribe. So, You have inspired me to give it a go, gonna research groups in my area and see what I can find. Thank you , and thanks to all the gamer/ d&d/ LARP folks who are trying to make the hobby less mysterious and more accessible. Best wishes from Colorado USA.
This is so heart-warming to read! I'm so glad you're looking at joining LARP. I wish you all the fun in the world <3

Aww! Cosy vlogs and camping videos I’m all about! Thank you for making this for us 😊
@@lazerbean yay! Thank you for watching!
Cosy Vibes! ☺☺☺☺
Great video, very consize and informative! I've run into the same problems with finding resources for narrative design. I'm pretty new to the field and have been creating content for that specific reason as I learn myself. What are some subjects/areas of narrative design that you feel could use exploring/highlighting/explaining for beginners? I'd love to have a little chat about that!
Thank you! Mainly I encourage people new to ND to look at both writing and design work - understanding how to write scripts and story for games as well as getting to know how to work in an engine allows you to learn the best of both worlds and opens up more opportunities.

Took me way too long to get around to watching this! Always good to see you in the field. I would always be weary of eurohike gear, you can sometimes get a good bargain but in general i dont rate the quality of that brand at all. Camping gear in general, I've got an abundance of camping gear if you ever want the Dragons Watch crew to bring anything down for you to borrow I'd be more than happy, think we know you well enough at this point to know you'll look after it 😊. *scoooooons awaaay!*
