Webinar: Municipal Natural Infrastructure Asset Inventory
Переглядів 1223 роки тому
Creation of a comprehensive inventory of municipal natural infrastructure assets is one of the first steps in management and valuation of these assets and the services they provide us. The idea behind the Municipal Natural Infrastructure Asset Inventory is to help municipalities create a spatial resource and database using best available data, and then allow municipal users to self-identify the...
Pronghorn Xing: Improving pronghorn conservation through road improvements
Переглядів 483 роки тому
In the Canadian Northern Sagebrush Steppe (NSS), pronghorn move both daily, to find food and local habitats, and annually, migrating to meet their seasonal needs. Roads crisscross the NSS, causing two key issues for pronghorn: 1. Direct mortality from vehicle collisions 2. Avoidance of roads reducing pronghorn health and dividing populations We developed Pronghorn Xing (PX), a citizen science p...
Putting Beavers to Work - SERN BC Webinar

Beavers, Canada's national animal, provide many valuable ecosystem services including storage of water during droughts and flooding, creation of habitat for a variety of species (including fish!), and improvement of water quality. These benefits allow for the increased watershed resiliency and restoration across the landscape. Land owners can come into conflict with beavers as they can cause da...

Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ’s) and Protective Notations (PNT’s) are often suggested as possible conservation designations. This webinar will provide descriptions of these tools, and guidance for their use in ecological conservation.

"PromoSM" 💥
Experimented with this idea 25 years ago using stovepipe in a smaller damm. It looked promising and I reached retirement. This was in Nova Scotia, Canada but a beavers are beavers everywhere
Wont they just plug up around the cage
Good question! The inlet end of the pipe is suspended in the middle of the cage, reducing the feeling of flowing water thus reducing the beaver's instinct to try to plug it. If they do feel some flowing water, the surface area of the cage is much too large from them to effectively plug it, even if they try. Additionally, this is one reason why the pipe is extended approximately 40 feet into the pond, far away from the outlet end which produces the sound of running water. By having the inlet and outlet ends far apart, the beaver can't usually figure out where the leak in the dam is coming from or how to fix it. I have not heard of a beaver successfully plugging the cage on the inlet end but it's something to monitor for.
When I am night fishing for flathead catfish their huge tail slap can really kill the fishing on a quiet night.
I've been watching beaver presentations for the past 5 hours and this is the best one so far.
This is funny shit rite here
Nature is so much more brilliant than we humans could ever be
And people like to kill them because they back up water. When in reality there doing something amazing things for humanity and other things such as fish
Love this video
I wonder if this is AI generated background music.
Those are hideous, there’s got to be a better way. Also why trap and kill beaver, why not do the humane thing and use live traps and relocate those beavers. Imagine driving up to a cabin in this pristine setting and seeing that wire monstrosity. Can’t that be built on a smaller scale and camouflaged in some way, that took me all of 30 seconds to think of that solution. Yes there’s got to be a better way.
I don't think you watched all the way through. The cage is meant to discourage them from building, not kill them.
The size is also to make it more difficult for them to build. Please watch your content thoroughly before giving a poorly educated opinion.
Is there a reveiw on this a year later or two to see what the results are? Looks like a great idea.
Great question! We do our best to monitor all of our install sites yearly or ask partners how they are functioning. Pond levellers require maintenance checks once or twice a year to ensure they are working properly and to clear any vegetation or debris that may build up if it's installed in a shallower pond. Occasionally the pond leveller requires adjustments such as the installation of a protective grate on the outflow end of the pipe, but most of the time this is not necessary. To see examples of other pond levellers installed in Alberta, please visit our Map of Beaver Coexistence Tools (www.rockies.ca/beavers/map.php)
@@Miistakis thank you.
Nice
Won't the beavers eventually cut through the plastic, and then plug up the tube?
Great question! Although that is possible it's unlikely and we've never heard of that happening at a site. It's unlikely because the beaver is motivated by the sound and feeling of the water flow created at either end of the pipe (outlet in the dam, and inlet which is placed in the pond). The inlet is protected by the large wire cage so the flow created is not as strong since the pipe sits in the middle of the cage. Essentially they cannot figure out where the source of the "leak" in the dam is located so do not know the pipe is involved at all. They will sometimes dam the end of the pipe but it's difficult since they are working against the flow of the water, and if this happens, metal fencing can be applied at the outlet as well.
If they damage it in a few years they'll just install a new one. Doesn't look super expensive.
Pros and cons of beavers especially when it comes to farmers and ranchers. I feel bad for this guy, but the reality is twofold as far as he's concerned. 1. He says he would like to see the land go back to how it was when he was a kid. Chances are the land is going back to how it was before he was a kid before the beavers left. 2. Beavers as a keystone species are very important for the environment and land. In multitudes of areas, and I think it will be shown when looking at the big picture they solve more problems than they cause.
volume can not hear
I love the video. Easy video ranking > Promo>SM!!!
I once had a man tell me beavers were God's land managers. Leave hem to their jobs, he said, and the land is in balance. Wisdom.
Beavers are a keystone species. They create habitat. They reinforce the water table and make the land healthy and reduce fire vulnerability.
If you live in an area where there are seasonal droughts and you fear or hate beavers you need education. Beavers are the best drought prevention you can get. Work with them nit against them. They will even reduce wildfire risk and damage.
Love this video. Beaver s are important to the ecosystem.
Great idea 💡
Looks pretty good. Just has to hold up against whatever flows down into it. 🙂
Exactly. This is why it's recommended that the exclusion fence is checked several times per year to ensure any debris that gets stuck against the fence is cleared away. This is much less time consuming than clearing a plugged culvert.
You are badly underestimating the intelligence of beavers. They will have a mud and stick dam built around that thing in no time at all.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Although beavers are incredibly intelligent, the unique trapezoidal shape of the exclusion fence is highly successful with a 95% success rate when installed in an appropriate location (not every site is ideal for exclusion fencing). The shape allows the sticks/debris/mud that beavers place on the fencing, to be washed to the side of the culvert exclusion fence. Regular maintenance (1-2 times per year) is required to ensure the debris isn't building up along the sides. For more information on exclusion fences please visit: www.beaverinstitute.org/problems-solutions/flooding-from-dams/
Post10 must love this...
That must be why this got recommended to me.
Soon as I saw this video pop up I knew why as well LOL. They need to contact him and make sure they did this correctly.
I bet he doesn't. He makes a lot of money through UA-cam. Solutions like this kill his opportunities.
This is cute
