Same as the English Labradors & American Labradors.. English being more heavy boned, big square head & shorter on the legs/back but its ancestors were the same. So, American Akita & Japanese Akitas?? Go figure..breeders made the American Akita to look the way it is today but its ancestors are Japanese grasshoppers. It is what it is.

Science tells us they are closely, genetically related. Thank you to the Matagi people who created them, the Samurai class who demanded of them and Helen Keller, the United States and the Japanese people who helped save them after WW2. These dogs have a magnificent history and were once on the brink of extinction shortly after the war. Their populations were so low in the United States that in order create a sustainable population the Akita were bred again with the German Shepard, Japanese Mastiff(tosa) and other until AKC created the standards. The breeds mentioned were already in the genetic makeup of the Akita INU because they were once bred in the 1600s and earlier by the Samurai as fighting dogs, protection & hunting. The Emperor abolished a decree that stood for 100s of years as a gift to the common people to raise them and thus u see its evolution by its changes. Look at EMPEROR TAISHOs Akitas and u see some big black bears in old photos. The color black was eventually phased out probably because of politics and a people weary of War. Today you see 2 magnificent specimens, both man-made and to have no equal.

the american akita is bigger than the japanese because there is english mastif in it, not a tosa inu, but remember there were three types of akita inu, rented the dog hunting dog and fight the dog, but the fighting dog had to hang ear and was slightly bigger

Ich habe einen Akita inu und Schiba inu. Das sind ganz tole Tiere. Die sind sehr speziell, ein Akita ist ein Hund aber nicht wie die anderen. Der Schiba ist genauso wie der Akita .Einfach wunderbare Hunde.🐶🐶🐶

The American Akita Inu is stunning in it’s own way but I’m definitely gonna own a Japanese Akita Inu with that golden light brown/white fur. Spectacular breed of dogs 👍

American Akita is much more bigger powerful robust and better looking then the Japanese one. My mate has a Japanese one I have a American one and my mate always tells me that my dog is much better looking then his and how he would have loved to swap them. Lol.

In America they want everything bigger, I do not understand why.

Why are some of you guys hating on American Akitas?? They're just as beautiful. Just because they're a lot bigger in America doesn't mean you should shame them. Obviously there are thinner/smaller people in Japan so there's no doubt the dogs would be similar and the same goes with the quite literally bigger Americans.... Chill out.

I recommend that you people commenting read a book called Dog Man; An Uncommon Life on a Far Away Mountain before you bash the American Akita. I think that the life of Morie Sawataishi and his attempt to save a breed that the nation of origin USED AS FOOD AND CLOTHING will help you to understand the origins of these two types...The ORIGINAL Akita LOOKED more like an "American Akita" - look at the stamp of Tochibana Go - How about taking a look at Hachiko - he has the larger structure than the current Japanese type Akita....Do your homework on the breed before you open your mouth.

If we Americans are going to take a dog breed from Japan and call it our own, we could, at the very least, pronounce the name of the breed right. I also think they should be considered separate breeds-- the Akita bred in America have differed far to greatly from the Japanese Akita Inu. I mean if people take issue with "American Akita" they can very easily be called something else. Its the Japanese who generally want to make the distinction.
