A lately deceased work colleague of mine played for the North of England against the All Blacks at Otley in 1979, when the North beat them 21-9. I'm a kiwi and I'm always interested to see how opposing teams handle the obvious manipulation of the haka I have seen the Australians just casually turn their back on the All Blacks during a haka. I have seen the French step up to them by stepping over the center line. And then get fined for it. A good haka is a powerful force and can be quite thrilling to be in close proximity to.

The Haka is a challenge, as the opposition you face it and don’t show fear in doing so you earn the respect of the (in this case) All Blacks. Australia once made the mistake of turning their backs and the All Blacks wanted to walk of the field rather than play cowards (the Australian team had been told to do this by a coach) The game did go on after some delays and was a brutal affair. It’s simple, face the challenge earn their respect. Oh and if you wanted to fight then it’s on because you FAILED the challenge.
