Failed Ignition Coil on the 85 -4K

During this shakedown ride, I planned to complete a 15-mile loop to bring the Shovelhead motor up to operating temperature and check for any additional leaks. The shorter 4-mile runs had gone flawlessly so far. However, about 10 miles into the ride, the motor began to backfire and eventually cut out as the 35-year-old ignition coil failed. Here’s a detailed account of the failure on what was ot...

1985 Softail Shovelhead Shakedown Ride - 4K

Another shakedown. I asked my son to follow in his truck in case I have any issues. At the first stop he noticed the oil leak as I was re-mounting the gopro. So I need to go over the oil lines between the rocker covers. But, its getting there.. one problem at a time!
1970 Harley Sprint Project
Переглядів 2082 місяці тому
The Sprint was part of Harley-Davidson's collaboration with the Italian company Aermacchi. This partnership aimed to produce smaller, more affordable motorcycles to compete with the influx of Japanese bikes in the American market during the 1960s and 1970s.

My son taking the project around the yard as we tune it in. Fixed the issues with spark plug gaps, carb tune and chased down a short that was causing the bike to cut out when I hit a bump.

True Dual Exhaust for the Shovetail Project
Переглядів 2245 місяців тому
Getting some work done before starting my Saturday chores. I scrapped the upswept exhaust in favor of these true-dual shovelhead pipes I got on ebay. There is always some tweaking that needs to be done to get things to fit right. And when I am mixing parts from different years and models it complicates things a little more. Some things to understand about building a chopper... Looks first, func...
S&S Performance Heads on the Shovetail

Got the 80" shovel back together and ready for first startup with new heads. Lot of oil in the sump so going to have to look at the oil pump check valve sooner or later. Otherwise a successful test and this time I have brakes! My son just happened to come over as I was pulling the bike out so he got to take it for a ride down the driveway too. Still undecided on the rear fender though.. have th...

Duckwalk
nice sound
Two minutes of my life I’ll never get back 🤦♂️
then keep moving. nobody invited you.
Are you experiencing a lot of cackling after you let off the gas I have Samson pipes took out the baffles add the cones
not sure what you mean by crackling. certainly the decel pops that are standard with harley but it didn't sound bad at all.
Bad float or float needle 🤷🏻
needed a rebuild on the accelerator pump.
Could not hear what you were saying. Only saw underneath your bike.
needed a rebuild on the accelerator pump.
Dude I can't hear a single word your saying and my volume is all the way up and I literally have the damn speaker shoved in my freaking ear. 100% pointless video dude you might as well take it down your not going to help anyone with this video dont have a clue what your doing what your fixing what your issue is or if your even fixing anything or what the hell your doing or the purpose of this video nobody has any way of knowing or understanding a single thing about it. Might as well post a video of dogs sleeping
Beautiful bike. Worth the attention!
Geez willickers.... a fine bike~~
A blatantly desirable machine~~~~
Love the colour on those pipes. Greetings from Ireland.
I just ate woodys 😮😮😮😮 😅
Nice
Gotta love the puke bucket
probably the most useless video on youtube....what did we just witness? That you have no freakin leak? Great..lol
Now that's a scooter that sounds like a Harley! A concept that completely evades The Motor Company. They honestly believe that actual Bikers will line up to pay $30k+ for a motorcycle that is whisper quiet.
Sounds good 👍
Very nice bike... can you tell me the name of that kind of gas tank ? It looks like a mustang but it seems biggest as a mustang...
Hi Yann. I bought it on ebay last year. Paughco - 820 - 1 Piece Fatbob Style Mustang Tank, 4.75gal.. Had to make my own mounts though
@@chadunderwood2754 thanks for your answer, Chad ! Oh...i wanted to say "bigger than", not "biggest as" ! My high school years are a little bit far, so my english lessons too !
Can hear it enough to know it sounds great. It sounds way better than those 93" s&s shovels. I think those engines don't sound very good. Don't look right either.
Sounds good man.
Sweet I just did my SE heads again I changed the cam bearing added a S&S reed valve breather . Also replaced the Shift pawl with a Jim's Easy shift .
What do you think of the jims shift pawl ? I've been considering that myself or getting a Sputhe shift pawl
@@whatyoumakeofit6635 It is smooth shifting I have not had no trouble with it at all . My Stock was fine I rebuilt the trans in 2019 Got a V twin Pawl and used the stock ratchet and it was not going into 1st or 5th I road 15000 miles with it like that before a said enough . I could shift at low rpm 2500 to 3000 but over that it miss . choke out it refuse to go into first on warm up . Im happy with the Jims
I have not used that product. I wonder if there is one for the 4-speed.. This FXST shifts fine but my panhead ratchet top could be tighter.
@@chadunderwood2754 If it uses springs and the ratchet im sure they have a Pawl for it I did new teeth of the ratchet on a 1986 it shifted smooth springs and the 5 speed trans on all my bike . The pan I had was a 4 speed . I never worked on it only had it 8 months .
Sounds good. Looks good.
te vroeg
Sweat bike , I had a 1959 FL made me sick to let it go .
Fuel , I get that with my EVO time to time from the heat and fuel I run . If I use cheap gas it will do it more often then if I use a good grade of fuel No Ethanol . Hope you found out why 2019 been some time ago
Turned out to be an intake leak. Once fixed it ran great
@@chadunderwood2754 cool
getting the same with my old evo 2. in for a service next week to see whats the issue
what was your solution my 86 fxr doing same @@MrJackSeverity

@@JCcanU hey thanks man! btw. i have a channel on rumble called WrechingHarleyDavidson where i have more videos. I don't post much on youtube anymore
@@chadunderwood2754 Ok Cool
Outstanding!
how are you supporting your carb?
in this video there was no support. i had it they way i got it except for some work i did on the carb itself. Since then I have installed a shovelhead motor and the carb is supported by a bracket from the intake to the engine case.
What did you do to adjust your accelerator push rod..isn't it just a single push rod ..??
The S&S Super E has an accelerator pump adjustment in addition to the throttle and idle adjustments. So it just needed a small tweak.
Where did you get the pipes??? I cant find any for mine !!!!
I also have an 85. Where did you get the pipes??? I can not find any for FXST thats an 85. Its the basterd bike with the 4 speed kicker. I can't find pipes for mine. The ones that were on it when I got her were the wrong pipes and offset so bad to make them work screwed up timing bad because of sucking air and then blew head gasket. Rebuilding top end now.
They came with the bike when I bought it. I'm going to replace them though. I'm rebuilding this with a Shovelhead motor. I have that build on rumble at Wrenching Harley Davidson.
@@chadunderwood2754 Cool I would love to buy them from you !!!!
@@stevepeters4583 I replied on the rumble post.
When you gave it a little gas sounds like you could put a little bit bigger pilot jet in super easy carburetor just tried going up one size not the main jet but the long skinny jet
How did you type in Amazon to find the torque cones?
I don't remember. But you can find them at denniskirk or ebay too.
read the description under the video. this was a basket case. I did get it running right and it starts first kick now. needed a lot of work to the carb and new plugs
Leave the fuckin choke on for god sake
Thinking of doing a debaffle on my 2011 street bob with vance and hines pipes and installing these to get more sound and power. Do they help?
I feel like they help. I didn't dyno though. I felt better low end torque and there was a "flat spot" in acceleration that mostly went away. the audio in the video is not the best, it does sound a lot better too.

My man, Leave the choke on... looks good
Beauty after a 85 very rare in UK great sound.
ok. so I threw the instructions aside and just started playing with float levels. I hate doing that because those screws get mangled easily. I went straight to .400 and that stopped all leaking.. however it also caused the bowl to empty and stall the engine. So I went back to .275 which is just under 1/10 over max spec. This seems to be right on the edge. Test ride went well.. no overflow in 10 miles. when I got home I held it level for a few minutes to see if it did it again.. still good. when I put it on the kick stand, it did piddle a few drops but I assume that is the fuel level shifting in the bowl as I leaned over onto the kickstand. This bike leans more than my other bikes. I ordered new caps, a petcock and new fuel line because. I used the caps from an old tank I have in the shop. The vented cap on the 85 softail only vended in.. not out so that took care of the pressure problem. Hopefully that puts it to bed but then these things do tend to creep up once I think I got them fixed so I'll just wait and see.
what was it after all?
it was an intake leak in the front cylinder even though my pressure test and bubble test didn't find it. The intake port on the head wouldn't seal and it just got worse. Ed at Unique Cycle in Hewitt NJ hooked me up with some parts and great advice to seal it up and it's been perfect since then. But I did end up replacing the pistons and cylinders. the front piston was pretty bad.
Sounds good brother
thanks. it took a lot of work and patience to get it finally tuned in.
@@chadunderwood2754 those of us who own, work on and ride these machines know that's the God honest truth. Stay safe out there.
