For me lyrics are an extremely important and If I like a band I will leave one favorite cd in, and listen to it every day for months so I feel I have grasped the experience in its entirety, and completely dissect every note and every song meaning. Maynard to me is very mysterious, poetic, and now (to me) not religious, but very spiritual. And as for your question, I feel it could be interpreted in so many ways (as with many songs). Perhaps he experienced floating down the Verde River, or is just writing about it in his elusive poetic lyrical genius way. He lives in Arizona the Verde River flows through there. A long time ago a being we know named Eddie Vedder was once asked the meaning to one of his songs. He replied something along the lines of rather than give you a literal meaning in my songs, I feel people should take it in themselves, and decide what it means to THEM and how they may relate some of the lyrics to their life experience and thoughts. Before that was even said, that is how I chose to interpret my favorite songs. I choose to imagine myself floating down an enchanting river and taking in the peaceful even spiritual feeling of floating downstream. As for literal meaning I could not say because I think (alongside the likes of say Radiohead), Maynard is one of a chosen few that traveled from another dimension with fellow alien beings from an alien world, somehow came upon our Earth, decided to stay and dwell amongst us (LOL), and Maynard tends to write in mysterious metaphors and/or lines with a very poetic "flow". "I may be right.... I may be crazy" (in fact I'm just a silly lunatic).
my take on this is its more or less about death, the inevitable final destination or journey. as you come before the literal or metaphorical river that can be calm or ruff you weigh your worth. what have you done with your time that you were alive. "however did you get here? " I don't know, just my take on it. for all I know its about a cheeseburger.
