What should the parents do if the first meeting comes out like the first one? What would be the next course of action after such an unsatisfactory meeting?

It's easy to complain about teachers being late for an after school meeting when you get to use the restroom whenever you want. JS

This has been my experience with every iep meeting I have attended for my daughter. The administration is never prepared, and this is a direct result of lack of leadership from the top down.

That interpreter-- like whoa. Terrible. Also, there should always be a Pre-ARD meeting between the teachers and the other people in the meeting prior to the parents arriving to ensure that everyone is there and has all of the things they are going to say and provide.

Even if you can't have everyone attend the meeting, you should still hold a professional meeting. You do not have to wait for everyone to show up before you get started. If someone can't show up, make sure you have a teacher's report and the Excusal form. If the parent doesn't agree, just table the meeting!

Why does the "good" example have them showing up with an already-written IEP for the parents to sign? Isn't it supposed to be a collaborative effort with the parents' input?

Some districts mandate that a draft be written prior to the meeting and shared with the parent before the meeting. Any and everything in the draft can be changed.

This is sadly very true until parents take charge of the IEP process and hold them accountable. I found it useful to always demand copies of the proposed goals in advance of the meeting as that appeared to let them know I was going to be specifically asking about it and caused them to prepare better.

IEP is a SCAPEGOAT for PRINCIPAL when their SCHOOL is FAILING. I don't even know how these people sleep at night. It's all a POLITICAL game. It's time to QUIT THE BULLSHIT. School needs RESTRUCTURING. We need TEACHER that teach with the HEART/MIND, not because of the SALARY. Remember EVERYONE is TALENTED in their OWN UNIQUE WAY? Just because a STUDENT does not show enhancement in some categories does not mean they're disable. It could very well be their BEST FEATURES.

I am so thankful for the high school I go to because everyone cares about my IEP. I still have teachers from sophomore and freshman year still keeping in touch with me and my parents to see how I’m doing and I’m a junior now. All my teachers are really great and the ARD people are amazing as well. I use to go to a ghetto school in Snook Texas and no one cared, not one followed anything when they were suppose to it was terrible. I’m glad I’m at the school I am now

This whole demonstration was only to serve the purpose to protect the school systems on a legal basis really a crock of shyt!! what they need is a video to explain to parents what we need to be asking and KEY WORDS in writing- because if we don't do it legally in written form ...the schools and the whole system including the teachers and WILL screw you over ( they act as a game that even if one is wrong they protect one another unless you have documented proof record always what they say what they do when and at what time) ...they don't actually want to help these children not most of them...the schools are always complaining about a budget cutting all kinds of programs and if you don't actually know the disability act and the laws... that no one makes public and no one makes it easily attainable knowledge... can you will definitely be screwed... I'm going through it now....my son's teacher complaints about his behavior his impulsiveness and everything else so that he was diagnosed with ADHD but even though he has a learning handicap for not being able to learn by not being able to sit still and pay attention and not being able to retain information she still keeps writing that he's on grade level because if he qualifies for anything else the school will have to make a accommodations legally and they don't want that!... and the sad truth of it is that most of us parents will fight and fight and fight (for YEAES) for ways to better improve the lives of our children and the school will always dip and Dodge its way around giving these kids what they really need even when they see it hindering their educational capabilities and progress ....had they had the right team of people to honestly care to help and if they would stop playing the system and do it swiftly these kids can get an equal standing foundation before the higher grades come around .... I'm a single mother living in a neighborhood where most people financially struggle and unfortunately my health insurance is not the best that also plays a role I've noticed the doctors will just dismiss you when they know you don't have that better insurance... I went from working for the state to having great insurance to being on State medicade insurance its heartbreaking to see what they would have done before ...and how they don't care now ...from doctors to teachers how in the suburban neighborhood they will quickly help a child... but how struggling more poor neighborhoods will keep playing the system of DELAYING YOUR IEP ...playing games with word trickery to avoid the child getting the help that he needs because it's not in the schools budget... Teachers becoming agents for this systematic failure

Beauty Guru Why would your parents refuse to let you have an IEP? Even if you don’t have an IEP, you can still go to college. But if your grades aren’t that good, you might want to consider a tech college. It’s more like a hands on apprenticeship to help you get a good paying job.

5 years have passed. I’m a Behaviroal therapist and I’m scared that this is what the school system is leading the client Im working too. Only reason I say that is because instead of pushing him and making him work harder. They’re trynna to just get him “accommodations” which pretty much means making it easier for him. He’s a senior now who’s very talkative. His hobby is writing but he mainly struggles when it comes to being social and interacting with others to the point where he won’t even advocate for himself. They’ve beeen making it easier for him to the point where I don’t think he’s gonna be able to make it in the real world after he graduates. He’s 17 now and I’ve aged out clients til 21 but you’re totally right. If you can’t help yourself nobody really cares if they’re not getting paid. I hope you got the help you needed. It’s been 5 years since you posted this so I hope all is better and you’re doing well now.
