Y thee Asinine
Приєднався 9 лис 2011
Y thee Asinine is a guitarist and electronic musician based in Los Angeles. He's been playing music his whole life, starting with piano, then saxophone, and when he discovered grunge and alternative rock in the 90s, he picked up the guitar. His influences include Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Deftones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, and Incubus, among many others. In addition, his love for electronic music such as The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, and Massive Attack got him into synthesizers and drum machines. When you hear his music, it's obvious who his influences are, but much harder to classify into a specific genre. With searing guitar riffs, hard hitting drums, frenetic bass lines, and sampled and synthesized sounds, Y thee Asinine creates songs that are heavy, energetic, hypnotic, and psychedelic.

Great! I have a problem when changing my parts, i work with short samples and flex machines, with different effects, and as i change parts on the run there's a sort of bug with sounds, sometimes a mute of some sounds...you don't have the same ptoblem....is this because you're using samples starting on the first trig?
Doing the lord's work. Thank you!
That was great. Thanks
Thank you. ❤
Cool story the Heat is WAY better
Excellent. Thank You
Lawdamercy there's a Big Beat outro jam, somebody hold me back from the dance floor
Great video thank you
less is more. perc. sounds a little too dense / cluttered... it's nice to have some space, as opposed to a wall of layered drum patterns
Thank you! Reload seems like a great performance feature to go back to the original sounds and effect settings you started with
Really helpful. Thank you for making this. It's so easy to get bogged down with all that this amazing machine can do.
Nice jam! Love my octatrack. I refuse to ever part ways with it. Just wish they would reboot monomachine but on steroids. You have to take it slow with elektron devices and nothing to be ashamed of people. It’s worth the effort. Insane modulations and mangling can be had that others can’t come close.
Man, nice video to explain your workflow. However, that's a huge wall of sound. Sometimes a thoughtful amount of less is much more. Thanks for sharing, and keep it up posting more! We appreciate it!
Where do you get these drum loop samples from if I may respectfully ask? I’d love to purchase some if are available as a sound pack online!
These are free samples from That Sound and Musicradar
Awesome video and you’re 💯 % correct, I actually got it last month and kept it simple and I’m really enjoying it. It’s not a horror story like it’s made out be.
This machine is so not able to be fully functional as it could be-such a terrible system of files-parts-patterns. Samples are so not utilized for variety. I would pay for new firmware
Thanks for the video. I guess I still can't wrap my head around where you programmed the different samples for each part? I really like your videos. Appreciate you...
True! Was one of those!
Excellent demonstration. Where are the drum sample/loops from, are they stock presets with the Octa or your own?
The drum loops are free samples from That Sound and Musicradar
You do great octa videos! Thanks man!!!
man thank you very much for this video
"it’s not meant to be (a drum machine) “ It’s meant to be nearly anything you want it to be, and do a great job at it. Maybe it’ll fall a little short as a drum synthesizer compared to dedicated drum synths, (Though with single cycle waveforms, fast envelopes and effects like the comb filter, it can generate some great percussion) - But as a straight sample based drum machine, nothing can touch it imo.
Thank you. I have my mk2 arriving tomorrow.... I'm so overloaded with approx 2 weeks of watching at least 3 hours of vids a day and reading manuals and guides, you have totally mellowed me out. Thank you! 😁 ♥ 🎶 🎹
Glad I could help! Take it slow and have fun!
Will do! Thanks. 😁
Great video man! Awesome job! Sweet track too
Thank you!
Most informative video I’ve seen. THANK YOU
Excellent! I needed a refresher on my Octatrack after some time.
What helped me the first year was learning how to load samples into the T1-T8 tracks, using the effects, mixers, sequencer basics. Only a few years later did I get into how to use the arranger tool, fancy fader tricks with p-locks and conditional trigs. I still am learning it years later! I also learned how to sample and use that tool as that takes some effort to correctly get samples recorded at decent audio levels.
Thank you . Great video
Thanks for your vids. I will continue to watch. But after literally a year of researching Elektron boxes, I'm going with the Roland SP-404 mk2. Seems much more user- and guitar-friendly. Looking forward to your review!
I was eyeing the 404mk2 before I bought the OT. looks really fun and inspiring, esp with all the fx. have fun man!
FM3 have overbridge ? if not a big lose for me !
obviously it's not called overbridge, but it has a similar thing ie: editor and record multitracks over usb. nowadays thats pretty standard when it comes to guitar multifx pedals
I love and hate my octatrack at the same time. I have used it for sound design in animations and keep it for that one purpose but for making music it is so uninspiring and troublesome. Recently been using an rc505 and pulsar 23 an those are like dragons, so much hands on fun and instantly playable. Octatrack takes ages to get anywhere... But when you get there it sounds good (eventually)
I’m going to start this week on getting better with Octa. I kinda let myself go on music but I have no idea why bc I have probably the best machine ever made.
Cool sounds, but tbh I think one of the Chase Bliss looper/delay pedals could do more or less the same
I mean 8 track loopers are pretty rare. Obviously if your buying an octatrack just to use it as looper its probably not worth the price, but if you already have one or want to do sampling as well its an excellent looper. Why buy a dedicated loop pedal instead of using what you have?
@@tezeta3725 you're right, the comment makes no sense without context. I'm a guitarist with too many loopers already.. and getting into synths without trying to be DAWless.
boy you are confused
About?

👍🏻
cool video man! I have the ARmk2 been eying the A4!
Thanks! A4 + AR wud be a great pair! AR is next on my list
Big fingers
vinyls?
That's a lot of Neighbours..
I had okta and i had to say it's a shit drum machine, yeah yeah - it could play samples, but okta doesn't have 1/4 that analog rythm has. I dont know how that works for Fjaak, but to me everything that goes from okta for drums is liveless, and flat.
Where is this drum break from?
Some free sample pack, maybe from That Sound
I was almost one of those that would have put my octa on offer up or reverb, the early firmware didn't sleep or have a screen saver so my screen got burned with the arp page! It's not really a bother, and doesn't effect workability. I've started with pickup machine right now, because it's an incredible and powerful looper that I can just jump in and start playing around so I don't get discouraged as I did after I first bought it, but also it's really easy that way to record complex and original samples. My next goal is to chop up pickup loops into mangled samples in a flex machine. I'm planning on having my RD-8 go to a thru machine and to record the 808 style drums so I wouldn't have to lug the drum machine around, or use the drum machine live in a thru and perhaps record synth basses from my matriarch or eurorack so I'll never have to lug that shit around which wouldn't be ideal- if I ever decide to play live again. I'm trying to learn how to make more DnBish rhythms like chopping up the "amen break" or something, which I realised the octatrack would probably excel at. So after years of playing with CV/gate with no midi or centralised midi machine after my mpc1000 broke (I think it was the motherboard or flash memory went sour cause it doesn't store samples), I'm dedicating myself to learning the machine despite how poorly the manual is written; the manual really leaves shit out that UA-cam tutorials fill in and they are just more my learning type. Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence!
Does the FM3 have LFOs, envelope followers, or any way of modulating the FX over time?
Yup
I don’t think you understand WHY Elektron used analog saturation instead of digital. Digital systems are really bad at saturating signals without causing a lot of aliasing. If you personally can’t tell the difference, maybe that’s why you’re using a guitar fx processor for mastering.
Im sure you record to tape and release your music on vinyl too for that all analog sound.
Great video mate. I’m a guitarist who got into dj’ing and production, for years all I wanted was a loop pedal that you could pre set loop lengths. Couldn’t find one so bought a octatrack Morningstar mc6 set to trigger the pickup machines, record, start, stop and machine up/down and I have the ultimate looper
Thanks man! That sounds like a sweet setup
Haha, as soon as you hit play on that loop, I was like "Oh, I see why he has trouble programming beats he wants." I've been programming beats for years and I would have a hard time programming something like that :)
I think it mainly has this reputation of being complicated and scary because everybody's saying so. When I ask those who are afraid how far they're into the manual, most of the times the next thing I hear is "oh yeah too long, didn't read. I don't need a manual anyways", which is a funny thing to say when you're stuck ^^ 4:30 good points. It makes sense to start with only a small subset of the functionalities. The rest comes when time is right. When you're ready for more input, you automatically start searching for information. 💪
Strong meat beat manifesto vibes. Love it all!
coming from the digitakt the fact you can preview your re triggers because they are baked in seems great. also the sample length, slicing etc all looks great. might just have to get one 😊😊
