Theme: 2025 Readiness - Early activities A new year brings new opportunities to make positive changes at work, setting the stage for smarter, more effective decisions in 2025. In this episode, we'll dive into a wide range of topics designed to help you streamline processes and stay ahead: phasing out paper files, scheduling time to review your manual, enhancing training programs, strengthening client relationships, preparing for new laws, and adapting to political shifts with newly elected officials. Tune in for practical tips and strategies to kickstart a successful year in public procurement • Hot Topics (Getting a Jump on 2025): Some ways to plan ahead include check-ins with staff, planning/calendaring/budgeting for professional development, training internal staff and end user clients on procurement processes, looking ahead to plan your personal/down time for the year, hold time for major known conferences/events on your calendar, etc. An additional discussion on relationship building follows focusing on recognizing that there are lots of leadership changes that some are facing related to the 2024 election. • Way to Grow: Advice on recommendations for setting goals, prioritizing personal development, and developing healthy habits in the new year. • Tech talk: Building guides for new technology processes • Chapter Updates: Interview with Marie Ozanne - 2024 President of the MN NIGP, on how Chapters are gearing up for the new year by seamlessly blending their incoming board members with those who will be continuing their service. We will hear from the Minnesota chapter about their exciting plans to integrate the new team, ensuring the highest level of success moving forward. • Commentary: It has been said that “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” The quote is often used to emphasize that goals need to be actionable and have a plan to be achieved. As we start a new year, we often start with many goals and ideas that all too often never materialize. In this segment, we discuss the importance of making a plan by breaking down the steps necessary to achieve your goal. That alone is still not enough though. True magic happens, and goals are achieved when you put that plan into action. Make your dreams a reality, friends…even when taking action gets tough!

Todd, Great work assembling these excellent messengers, who exemplify successful leaders, and inspire others in so many ways. They each provided helpful insights about becoming a leader and enlisting perhaps your supervisor and others to help you along the way. The public procurement profession is the place for a full diversity of leadership. Being a lateral leader is important when you have to influence other leaders to make the best choices. Being a leader of your office, is ensuring you are lifting up your staff, opening minds to the possibilities for their success..... And that also goes for leading potential suppliers to show up and be the best providers of great services and products to meet the needs of our citizens. Their work makes life better! Although this distinguished group of messengers were not sharing their journey or turning points to achieve their vision of success, I have tremendous respect for their successive years of building their leadership skills while lifting those around them. In fact, we are all on the same team! Congratulations on this great "first" conversation. I look forward to more!

Here's the "Twas the Night Before" poem and the listing of this month's show: 'Twas the night before the deadline, and all through the place, procurement professionals were hoping for competition and grace. The solicitations were posted online, with great care, in hopes that the proposals would soon appear there. All questions were answered, each one addressed, improving the likelihood of responsiveness. Potential suppliers had labored in turn to vie for the work and award they would earn. As the deadline drew near, there arose such a clatter, I went to my desk to see what was the matter. Right by the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon shined brightly on the new fallen snow and gave the appearance of objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should I see, but a team of suppliers, posting deals near me. With systems and inputs, so lively and quick, I knew we’d be ready to evaluate and pick. More rapid than eagles the offers they came, tallied, and counted and listed by name: Periscope, Toro, Amazon, and Cintas! Carrier, Home Depot, SCW and DRS! Graybar, Pavilion, and Sourcewell as well! ODP Solutions and a whole host more! The procurement professionals were ready to calculate the scores. As leaves before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, so up to the office the procurement staff flew, With a sleigh full of end users and contracts too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard in my space, The chatter or end user’s making their case. As I drew in my breath and heard something loud, Down the hallway came suppliers all in a crowd. They were dressed all in suits, from their heads to their feet, and their clothes were all tarnished with ink stains, how neat! A bundle of contracts they had flung on their back, and they looked like lawyers opening their pack. Their eyes, how they twinkled! Their smiles, how merry! I expected morose but oh on the contrary, their droll little mouths were drawn up like a bow, And the ink in their pens was blue so it would show. The stump of that pen they held tight in their hand, and they signed all the contracts, just like they planned. They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work, and filled all the offices, then turned with a smirk. And laying their fingers aside of their nose, and giving a nod, up the elevator they rose! They sprang to their sleigh, to their team gave a whistle, and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard them exclaim, ‘ere they drove out of sight, this is Radio N I G P. During this segment of the show, we take a “Deeper Dive” and explore opportunities that organizations and employees can work together to strengthen the mental and emotional well-being of the employees so that they can live healthier life’s and be productive both at home and work. • 46:07 Balancing your work/life and volunteering • 1:.04:20 “When enough is enough” with the Hot Topics group • 1:27:24 Managing your own situation: prioritization of multiple competing procurement requests, and how to make sure that taking a vacation has the desired effect. • 1:40:40 How to calm your mind to focus on what really matters • 1:49:49 Closing comments During the pandemic we began to vocalize the importance of work/life balance. We appreciated the importance of having a strong network and support system to help offset the struggles that isolation can bring. Unfortunately, for many whose struggle is with mental health, the awareness alone does not bring about change or relief. Listen to this month’s commentary for some insight and encouragement that will make you go HHMMMM.
