Great talk! Gave me a lot of new ideas about The Return and especially the ending which seems to connect with Fire Walk With Me and the original series in a circular way. Another element that blew my mind when I first discovered it is Carrie's scream is an almost exact coy of Laura's scream in Fire Walk With Me when she realizes that Bob is her dad. It's like The Fireman pulled a switch to redirect Evil Cooper to the TP sheriff's station and Judy answered this move by redirecting Dale Cooper and Carrie Page back to 1989, the day Laura had died.

I don''t appreciate _The Return_ at all. I think it's just another example of Lynch using the technique of the bully on his audience: « _Oh, you like my quirky, small-town characters trapped in a noir with supernatural undertones? Well, too bad, suckers. You get more_ Eraserhead! » If he just wanted to make more _Eraserhead,_ then he should have turned down Showtime's offer. Mark Frost's _Secret History_ was a magnificent prequel to our beloved series. They should have made that version of _The Return._ Instead, we get this horror. Lynch could have produced his poignant miniseries on the disintegration of the American dream with completely original characters and situations. Not trod all over our fond memories with his unrestrained nonsensical abstractions. The bits I most enjoyed were episode 8, and maybe the glass box segments. Neither had anything to do with _Twin Peaks._ I'd have gladly lapped up 13 episodes of that original story, rather than endured Lynch's destruction of everything that was worth saving in his glorious little town that time forgot. The ending... Obviously, it's an echo of season 2, epidode 9, _Lonely Souls._ When Cooper followed Donna to the house of Harold's next-door neighbours - the old lady and her grandson, who was learning magic - they found a woman they did not recognize, calling herself Treemond. In _Fire Walk With Me,_ that old lady and her grandson were identified as _The Chalfonts._ In _The Return's_ final episode, the lady in Sarah Palmer's house identifies herself as Mrs Treemond, and says she bought the house from _The Chalfonts._ So what? Treemonds replace Chalfonts. The Chalfonts were probably some neighbours Lynch had in 1952, when he was 6. They moved out unexpectedly, and boy-Lynch was traumatized by running out to play in their former front yard, then seeing an unfamiliar and unfriendly face watching him from their doorway. It's just an in-joke. A personal reference he'll never let us in on. But let's not dance around in circles to Lynch's infernal music. It means nothing, other than the « _interesting idea to think about_ » that struck him in that particular moment. And whose meaning is probably trite and long forgotten. If it were otherwise, there'd be no reason for him to be so cagy with us. He'd just say what he meant, if it were worth knowing. We fell for that man's malarkey. Hook, line and sinker.

Round 6: 1. Is there a better character name than Duncan Todd in all of The Return? - Duncan Todd is an excellent name, but so are Tracey Barberato, Walter Lawford, Chad Broxford, Cynthia Knox, Ike ”The Spike” Stadtler and Phil Bisby. There are also such gems as the ”pit boss” Warrick, detectives Fusco and of course the ”Polish accountant” Mr. Zawaski. 2. Is a tulpa simply a copy with the option of activating a programming on demand? If so, who is the original Dougie Jones an activatable copy of? - It is in unclear if any of the characters in Twin Peaks are ”tulpas”. That is a term used only once by Tammy Preston to describe the ”Fake Diane” , and Tammy might be wrong. But whatever the first version of Diane is I don’t think she is ”simply a copy with the option of activating a programming on demand”. - Tulpa is a kind of ”thought-form”. To me it represents, in the show at least, a coping mechanism. It has to do with trauma and disassociation. When a person experiences a trauma, a tulpa / a copy / a double is sometimes created in order to protect ”the original”. Laura in the Red Room (”I feel like I know her”) and Carrie Page could be examples of that; I think they are both Laura, they just don’t know or remember it. - ”Fake Diane” seems to be aware of her artificiality. She shouldn’t really know she is ”manufactured” but she does. Why? One possible answer is that there was something unnatural in her creation. Namely, that Mr. C created her. I don’t think one should create tulpas / copies of other people. If Mr. C has the ability to do that, he is probably breaking all kinds of rules. - Although most people seem to agree that Mr. C is to blame for creating the ”Fake Diane” there is also a faire chance that Diane did it herself. It could be that created the copy, either to protect herself or/and to deceive Mr. C as a part of bigger plan. We don’t actually know if Mr. C knew about ”Fake Diane” being ”fake”, nothing in the short conversation between them suggests that. There is also no proof that a tulpa or a copy would be more ”programmable” than an ordinary human being; Mr. C seems to get his way with people regardless. - The original Dougie Jones, what little we know of him, is definitely not ”a copy” of either Dale Cooper or Mr. C. As a person he is far inferior. I believe in 1997 Mr. C got rid of all his unwanted qualities and created Dougie Jones out of those. And why not - without all the boozing, gambling and partying Mr. C became a far more effective criminal! - I believe the Mr. C we briefly see in the finale of Season 2 finale still has all those negative Dougie Jones qualities in him. So the Cooper’s original ”shadow self” includes all aspects of both Mr. C and Dougie Jones.

Love the idea of one hibernating while the doppelganger comes out to play. Other than Cooper, even in the Lodge we don't see doppelgangers inhabit the same space as their dounles.

  • @LostInTheMovies

Thematically, I think of the ring more as a result of Laura's spiritual victory over Bob than as the cause of that victory. It is the trigger for Leland to kill her (in part because it ties her to Leland's previous victim and her knowledge/power of him), but it only arrives inside the train car through a series of events beginning with the manifestation of Ronette's angel (which leads to her hands being freed to open the train car door and let in the ring). And to my eyes, the angel is subconsciously manifested by Laura herself as an empowered personification of her empathy (for a friend and also her own "fallen" side) which is her intuitive escape route from Bob, who wants her to look in the mirror and see him (and probably kill Ronette, eliminating a witness and sealing the loss of her soul in one fell swoop). I get into this interpretation in more detail in a few places including my recent appearance on Colin's podcast.

Scenes were definitely re-ordered in season 3, creating some contradictions. A rough timeline of the actual order can be assembled based on things like costumes, glimpsed dates, and lines referencing recent events. According to an interview with Duwayne Dunham these changes occurred for rhythmic reasons as the episodes took shape. The script was written as one long text so it was not clear where one episode would end and another would begin until editing.

spot on re: the red room statements such as the gum. memory is one of / if not the most important elements of twin peaks .... its by memory that the central mystery is solved in season 1. hell, cooper is told who the murderer is in one of the first episodes....all he has to do is remember it. jennifer lynch makes some important statements about both memory and about who alice tremond is in an old interview about the secret diary.

about the windswept scene that's mentioned...my take on this is that cooper is basically near-death on his odyssey. he has little to no knowledge of his identity or quest, is stranded in the desert, and is in danger of not having another guide to move him forward with key information - his name, the location of his house, homework, etc. the security guard helps him remember details of his house (and ultimately takes him there). i think his arm is going numb because he is about to die. just later (iirc), gerard implores him not to, and then moves air (wind) at him. he then starts seeing the magical light that he needs to draw the fire-escape connections which outline elements of the criminal case (mystery) happening in his insurance agency. i think this moves him further down the road to himself.

I noticed the dark wood paneling behind John B and the mysterious wood panel in front of John T… This made me think about the woods, and wood in general, from lumbar to furniture, in Twin Peaks… How heavily it was referenced by many different characters. AND that made me think of how in The Return, I don't think wood or the forests were mentioned at all! Nobody talked about the trees, the forest (apart from Jerry getting lost in one), and even the log lady barely mentioned her log!
