I know this might sound unorthodox, but I disagree with the whole idea of portfolios. Like you said, you’re expected to have done product photography to land a product photography client, or event photography to book an event gig. But if you rely solely on portfolios, you might miss out on opportunities like landing a $10k car photography job just because it’s not in your portfolio. Portfolios only show what you’ve done, not what you’re capable of doing. In my opinion, they can be pretty limiting.

Yo, do y’all even get local clients who actually pay you what you’re worth? Man, I worked with local clients for about two years, and let me tell you, it was a whole struggle: 1. They always want a lot but wanna pay next to nothing. 2. Every project had to go through at least four revisions like, minimum. 3. And don’t even get me started on those who didn’t wanna pay at all, even after the job was done. Thank God for my UA-cam channel, though! It opened up doors to international clients, and honestly, it changed my whole game. Before that, I was on Fiverr for three years with literally no work coming through. But once my UA-cam started popping, things flipped. Now, I get like three DMs a day from clients who are not just ready to pay, but they pay me by the hour. Not per project by the hour! And the wild part? My hourly rate with these international clients is way more than what I used to charge local clients for a whole project. Plus, none of them ever ask for my portfolio. My UA-cam channel already does the flexing for me it’s proof enough that I know what I’m doing. So yeah, I pretty much stopped accepting local clients unless they’re ready to match my international rates. No hard feelings, but I gotta value my time and skills, you know? For anyone trying to break into this space, let me drop some advice: have a way to showcase your skills. Whether it’s UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, or X just something that shows what you can do. It makes a huge difference, trust me.
