Escape - The Most Dangerous Game (October 1, 1947)
ESCAPE.....
Is an American radio drama. It was radio's leading anthology series of high adventure radio dramas, airing on CBS from July 7, 1947 to September 25, 1954. Since the program did not have a regular sponsor, it was subjected to frequent schedule shifts and lower production budgets, although Richfield Oil signed on as a sponsor for five months in 1950. Despite these problems, Escape enthralled many listeners during its seven year run. The series' well remembered opening combined Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain with this introduction, as intoned by William Conrad and later Paul Frees..... "Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you... Escape!" Following the opening theme, a second announcer (usually Roy Rowan) would add...."Escape! Designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half hour of high adventure!"
Of the more than two hundred and thirty episodes, most have survived in good condition. Many story premises, both originals and adaptations, involved a protagonist in dire life-or-death straits, and the series featured more science fiction and supernatural tales than Suspense. Some of the memorable adaptations include Daphne du Maurier's "The Birds", Carl Stephenson's "Leiningen Versus the Ants", Algernon Blackwood's "Confession", Ray Bradbury's often reprinted "Mars Is Heaven", George R. Stewart's Earth Abides (the program's only two-parter), Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz". John Collier's "Evening Primrose", about people who live inside a department store, was later adapted to TV as a Stephen Sondheim musical starring Anthony Perkins. William Conrad, Harry Bartell and Elliott Reid were heard in the chilling "Three Skeleton Key" (broadcast on November 15, 1949), the tale of three men trapped in an isolated lighthouse by thousands of rats; the half-hour was adapted from an Esquire short story by the French writer George Toudouze and later remade for the March 17, 1950 broadcast starring Vincent Price, Harry Bartell and Jeff Corey and again for the August 9, 1953 broadcast starring Paul Frees, Ben Wright and Jay Novello.
Actors on the series included Elvia Allman, Eleanor Audley, Parley Baer, Michael Ann Barrett, Tony Barrett, Harry Bartell, Ted Bliss, Lillian Buyeff, Ken Christy, William Conrad, Ted deCorsia, John Dehner, Don Diamond, Paul Dubov, Sam Edwards, Virginia Gregg, Lou Merrill, Howard McNear, Jess Kirkpatrick, B.J. Thompson, Shep Menken, Frank Gerstle, George Neece, Jeanette Nolan, Dan O'Herlihy, Barney Phillips, Forrest Lewis, Robert Griffin, Alan Reed, Bill Johnstone, Sandra Gould, Junius Matthews, Carleton G. Young, Marvin Miller, Frank Lovejoy, Berry Kroeger, Vic Perrin, Elliott Lewis, Eleanore Tanin, Herb Vigran, Jack Webb, Peggy Webber and Will Wright. Music was supplied by Del Castillo, organist Ivan Ditmars, Cy Feuer, Wilbur Hatch and Leith Stevens. The announcers were Paul Frees and Roy Rowan. A television counterpart aired on CBS TV for a few months during 1950.

Wow,what a little gem! Thank you for sharing🎉😊
God bless your channel ❤
❤❤❤❤
Nice to hear this radio show. Ita my favorite book and it's always nice to get more insight. Such a dreadful story to some it must be.
Wow! First tune the “busiest” band chart, ever!!
Was this a soap opera?
I have the series on disc.
Love that Pepsodent jingle…
Great fun.
❤
Where is the Halo Shampoo jingle?
GREAT EPISODE, THANKS.
Thanks for the upload! 🥳
The loveliest thing I have listened to in quite some time! Thank you for uploading!
Like a trip back in time, so sweet and innocent! Thank you for uploading!
Whatever Maisie is on ld like some!!!
I just love Anthony Head's voice. I could listen to this over and over. This is either an early or a late Paul Temple adventure as I have listened to the available others on UA-cam already, sometimes twice. Please use this wonderful chap as a narrator more often!
This one was made before Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury took on the roles of Paul and Steve. Here are Carl Bernard as Paul and Bernadette Hodgson as Steve. I agree that Coke and Westbury were far superior.
These voice actors were terrible. Peter coke, Marjorie Westbury and also the 2006 remake voice actors were much better
This earlier version depicts a much gentler and less rude and less controlling Temple.
Iv enjoyed several times🎉
I love this couple. I’ve always envied their lifestyle. Funnily enough as a child living in central London during the 1950s, my parents knew a couple who lived in this sort of style, they had an apartment with a maid’s room off the kitchen. They also had a maid, she was a Polish jew who escaped Hitler at the beginning of WWII. Their life seemed so grand to me then - that lifestyle is now a part of British social history and we move on. Anthony Head is a perfect narrator.
Oh my goodness, I wish I had seen the movie…in its day especially! What a fantastic thing to find! It positively transports me. Thank you so much for uploading!
Wonderfully read and a great story. Love Paul Temple!
Complete
Perverted.
Martin Gabel was also Arlene Francis' husband.
Nice to hear a different formula: read rather than acted. And absolutely brilliantly read!
It would be fun to live in Stev and Pauls lives for a little while.😉😄❤️
I loved this, it’s written and read so well! Charlie is a gem, He keeps pecking-away at Paul’s self-importance - reminding him to ‘be Real’, and that (just because Paul has money and prestige) Charlie himself ISN’T going to be treated as an Inferior. Paul is a Social-snob, but He has a good Heart - and mustn’t be too Superior as (though he gripes) he and Charlie have been together since their days in the War, when Charlie was his ‘batsman’. What I enjoy the most is Paul and Steve relationship, where their different-yet-equal status in Each-Others eyes - and their deep fondness for One-Another - is always apparent. These two have a comfortable yet spicy Love-Relationship and Friendship, their mutual-support and verbal-jibes remind Me very much of My Great Grandparents style of interacting. (The fact that My Grandparents were Young in this same era may have something to do with that, as does their personalities!) As to Home, wardrobe and Lifestyle (sigh) - I can only wish.
Usual terrible attempt at a Scottish accent. Painful to listen to.
The music is too loud
I really enjoy Paul Temple. Thank you.
Classic radio!
Great story. Thanks
They need an AI movie of this. I grew up on this one when my dad bought a small collection of Cassettes at a truck stop decades ago.
where is the better version of this story? the audio is awful on this.

heard this about fifty years ago, always remembered it - finally got to hear it again
Misogynistic and bossy Mr Temple is a great bore
You got the wrong book chum!
Wonderful narrator. Thank you so much. You are a delight to listen to and make an old story I loved since childhood. :)
Anthony Head is just wonderful as a narrator. I am so hoping he is narrating other favorites. Love these wonderful childhood memories. Favorite night of the week. To Mr. Bradley. I am a Scot. and love the Hamish McBeth Series. Think you will enjoy the wonderful series and the great Scottish narrator.👵
0:06- "Another great story based on Frederick L. Collins' copyrighted book, 'The FBI in Peace and War'! Drama, thrills, ACTION!"
Anyone who abuses Animals, Babies or Toddlers is the lowest of the low bullying cowards
Beautiful reading and voice. 🐶🐈⬛🐷🐀🐻🦇🦔
