Topcoats: the mere mention of the word can strike fear into the hearts of both DIY enthusiasts and professional epoxy/resin installers. Applying a durable topcoat to your epoxy or resin countertops is arguably the most anxiety-inducing step in the entire process. You’ve invested time and effort into creating a stunning design, and naturally, you want to protect it with a finish that’s scratch, impact, stain, and heat resistant. But achieving that perfect topcoat can be tricky, with challenges like lap lines and unwanted texture potentially marring your hard work.
We understand the struggles because we’ve been there, too. Through extensive practice, we’ve refined our technique and are here to share it with you to help make your application as smooth and stress-free as possible. (Well, maybe not entirely stress-free, but certainly less stressful!)

Key Points to Keep in Mind:
Ratio Calculation & Mixing:
- Calculate the amount needed by multiplying the countertop’s square footage by 0.375.
- Round up to the nearest whole number divisible by 3.
- Shake Part A thoroughly and allow it to rest with the lid off for 5 minutes before mixing.
- Use a 3/8" nap roller (6" length) for large surfaces and a 1/4" nap roller (4" length) for sink and counter edges.
Surface Preparation:
- For PolyKote Pro or Enhanced, sand with 220 or 320 grit the next day.
- For PolyKote Original, wait 1-2 days until it is no longer soft or tacky.
- If the surface is outside the curing window and is no longer tacky, clean it with alcohol after sanding. Otherwise, use a microfiber towel and water. Ensure the surface is completely dry.
- Finish with a final wipe using a lint-free cloth (e.g., blue shop towel).
Installation Guidelines:
- Wait 48-72 hours before installing countertops or placing items on a top-coated surface. This timeframe may vary based on temperature and humidity conditions in your area.
