Hey all, Thanks for watching. I share my journey of how to grow food and raise chickens in Melbourne. Hope you stay for a while and share your experience too. Today I wanted to share how some local parrots have been munching on my apple trees. Netting is important but you also need to make sure the apples don't touch the net, because they can easily just eat those outer layer apples.

5:16. where's the ant cap? that piece of pine joined to the stump is a termite freeway if there is no ant cap. 5:50, those pieces of pine are allowing termites to bypass the ant caps. you need to devise another way to cover in below the house structure. ive had my own troubles in a couple of houses with termites finding ways past ant caps. i'm writing this as i watch the video. 7:20, omg!, even more pieces of pine allowing termites past ant caps. 8:11, that ducting was old and no good. save yourself $2000 and buy yourself some coveralls and crawl under and do it yourself. its just ducting. for $16,000 they did alright. except for all the ant cap bypasses. its a good idea to get the house set perfectly irrespective of cracking bath tiles. it helps the resale value. all those pieces of pine need to be trimmed to below the ant cap and the 45 degree bends reinstated. i see the ant cap is compromised behind a downpipe too. while you are sleeping, termites are looking for a way in to get a feed. dont count on pest control treatments to keep them out. they'll go to where the treatment wasnt done well enough.

Such a great idea but take care. My neighbour gave me some left over fine wood chip and within a week or two both my chickens were gravely ill and shortly after they were dead. A $200 visit to the vet informed me that it was something in the environment. I had the feed checked and it was fine... the only change to the area was the mulch. Im asuming the wood was contaminated with either poison or mold. So please take care ... maybe add new material slowly just in case the chooks start to get sick.

I have put Mesh nets on my fully grown mulberry trees with enough space for the rain and sun to get through. However, there is no room for insects to get to them so my trees are heavily fruiting. They’re only at the light green stage at the moment, but there are no insects or birds that are taking any of my fruits, so I’m thinking it’s a good idea to consider putting mesh over your trees, but placing a poll like a tent so it doesn’t stop the growth

Just wanted to know if you are aware of the final size of your trees in reference to spacing. You could put a tree in your chook pen, they will appreciate the shade come Summer. To suppress weeds try laying down cardboard from boxes and mulch over top. I think I saw a rosemary bush there. If you haven’t already you can put in culinary Sage, Greek Oregano (must be Greek if you want the one that is in on your pizza), chives, thyme, parsley etc. Mint in a container or it will become a weed. Also you can grow cold weather crops such as spring onions, Swiss chard, kale, beetroot, Snowpeas etc. The tree with the flowers is a Camelia. And the fruit tree looks like a fig tree - another massive tree like the Mulberry Tree.

    • @melbournegardener7582

Thanks so much for all the great info. Ah yes, it's a fig tree! That's the name I forgot! Great suggestions. I thought I'd try plant a little dense to see how things pan out. The chicken area has heaps of shade towards the shed area, so I figured to leave one area open for sun bathing :) I think my mulberry tree like my other trees are dwarves but even if not, I'll probably try to prune them down so they're reachable height. Yeah I'll need to collect lots of boxes and start suppressing. The grass roots just don't die though :(
