driving an AEC Matador down the M1 to Withams MOD Specialists
Nice
My Uncle drove a Matador with the Royal Artillery....in Holland and eventually Northern Germany at the end of the War. Later they drove down the motorway following a despatch rider. Told to pull over behind a parked lorry. Told to get out and get into another lorry and driven away...he then realised he had parked up in a queue and passed hundreds of lorries nose to tail...I suppose left to the civilian parties to use in the rebuilding of Germany !!!!!
The very BEST LORRY Manufacturer 😇 and the Finest “COLD-STARTING” Diesel engine courtesy of RICARDO ENGINEERING 😉
AEC Matador is my biggessssssst love !!!!!!💙💙💛💛🧡🧡
London's Burning!
Great Fires of London. Fireman Sam.
A close up look at the apparatus and equipment would be cool
Used them in the RAF 58/60
When I started my Apprenticeship at Arlingtons Bristol, the AEC dealership, our wrecker was a Matador, air over hydraulic brakes, no power steering, crash box, no seat belts, machine gun turret fixing in the roof, and 77 hp I think, pulling 32 ton wagons, I’m still in shock 55 years later.
Freddie.......
That would be about right....not.....hands on the strings of the ladder instead of the rounds and a Sub Officer operating the trailer pump.
cool
There are lots of them about there were over 900 of them they were getting rid of in 2002 ish.. Sounds like the cracking is the the hole in the the exhaust manifold the clicking is all the while not the relay
Are these any good off road? There are loads of vids of them getting bogged down.

Nice to see one with an intact cab, most of the surviving ones seem to be fucked!

Thanks for this, my Grandfather was in the NFS, was great to see this
same hear but my grate grandad
There are specific issues with the clutch when going backwards to do with twist in the rear springs causing lurches and jumps. Not helped by your feet bring physically off the floor as oposed to being braced as they are in a car, this tends to result in the jolting. The trick is to get the engine running spot on at tickover then get the size eleven off the pedal and let it run back very slowly at very low engine revs. Thats easy to say, of course when it has not run for a while it's full of damp everywhere and it's running like a sack of shovels - it ain't going to happen! Lovely to see 795 ride out again though.
Perhaps you need to re educate your driving philosophy for the GG: Rule one - you are bigger than they are Rule two - they all have brakes Rule three - they prefer driving to filling claim forms. Rule 4 F**** 'em If all else fails stick to rule 4 .......
Wagwanning
found out what i do eh
From the sounds of it I think your transmission needs some work
would you care to elaborate
Well when you guys were trying to reverse it out of the drive it sounded like there was quite the grinding sound, plus I also noticed how high the engine had to rev up in order to move. I'm no expert but even thought I live in the states I've worked on enough old trucks from the 40's and 50's and 60's to say that I think your clutch needs replacing if your having to rev it that much just to move it.
***** granted at this time there was a problem with the clutch, although not in that it needed replacing, after all these vehicles are all of incredibly low mileage for their age. it transpires after long periods of time oil from the engine seeps onto the clutch giving it an uneven bite. this is simply remedied by squirting a little petrol (or another solvent) through the inspection cover onto the clutch. the high revs were accounted for partly because of the clutch issue and the fact that the engine had only recently been got running and yet awaited further setting up such as valve clearances and accurate setting up of the timing. indeed this was the first time the machine had been driven anywhere in a good while and the intention of the drive was to get a feel for what the remaining jobs pending on it were. hope this clarifies things somewhat!
Yes it does and I understand now, but I am glasd to see you got the ol gal up and running
thats a tidy one !
