How to Build a Reciprocal Frame Roof
Back in 2019 we constructed the beautiful reciprocal frame roof from native New Zealand roundwood timber for our earth roundhouse. It can be tricky to work out the theory and calculations, but hopefully this video will demystify some of it for those who are interested in trying something similar.
Let me know if the comments if you have other questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
See my previous videos to learn how I constructed the roundwood henge frame and rubble trench foundation, and please consider subscribing if you'd like to see more content like this.
We've been living off-grid on our block of land in New Zealand's north island for 8 years, and building our natural earth house for the last 5. It's now at least partially habitable, and uses a variety of natural building methods including straw bale, cob, cordwood, light earth, lime plaster, earth plaster and a huge living roof.

Roundwood Timber Frame Henge Build Part 2
Переглядів 773 місяці тому
This is second of two videos covering the construction of the roundwood henge frame of our earth roundhouse. In it I cover in detail how I erected and secured the vertical and horizontal timbers of the henge. The frame is made entirely from native New Zealand totara, which is a fantastic timber for this purpose. It grows plentifully in our local region, and farmers often end up with areas of to...

These videos are great! Thanks so much for putting these together. Looking forward to the rest of the series :) Are you an experienced builder or have you learnt all of this through online research? How much did the build cost you roughly?

Thanks very much, and congratulations on being the first commenter on the channel :) I’m trying to make videos that I’d have found interesting/useful/confidence building when I was starting out, so I’m glad you’re finding them enjoyable. I began the build with very little building experience, learning from UA-cam and my own experiments/mistakes…. but I feel a lot more experienced now. I estimate that the build has cost me somewhere around NZ$50-60k so far, but bear in mind NZ is notoriously expensive, so it could probably be done for less in almost all other countries.

Okay cool, that's reassuring to hear. Like you, I've watched kris harbour and others and have wanted to build a round house for a while now. It's very inspiring to see you do this. I have heaps of questions! Where does the bulk of the cost come from? Are you going the legal route or are you doing this in secret? Why has it taken you so long to complete?

Main big-ticket items were the reclaimed joinery, 300m2 of pond liner for the roof, internal slate floor and wood fired range, but it's generally all the little stuff that adds up over time. Speaking of time, it's taking a long time to complete because I'm nowhere near full-time on it. I've taken months-long breaks over winters, or when other projects or events have taken over, plus we have the rest of the household to run, money-earning jobs to do, and we've homeschooled our two children. And when I am working on the house it's mostly me on my own, or I have one of the children or a single volunteer helping sometimes. And I've got quite a way yet to go - kitchen, bedroom, utility room(s), other plumbing and electrics, as well as many other projects to do on the property generally!

@@earthbuildnz okay that's makes sense. Well I hope your videos get more recognition because they're really great. I'll definitely be rewatching them. I'm working on a 3m round house as a bathroom/laundry and these will definitely come in handy. Thanks again :)
