Ya Salaam - Kora version of Maryam Shehab's "Is This Peace?"
A few weeks ago I first heard this deep, mournful song “Is this peace?” by young P@lestinian singer Maryam Shebab @solomkj and found it deeply resonant and poignant, articulating the tragedy of violence brought down upon the P@lestinian people in ways that speak directly to the heart of our humanity.
The original Arabic has been translated by @sadiq_ul_islam:
If this is peace
Then why would we ask for peace
There’s a look that makes my heart ache,
In my dream.
Words after words.
An eye bleeding water.
In a space in the middle of space
It has no place in existence
Why not?
In the words of our elder Martín Prechtel, “What can no longer be seen can still be remembered and if it was food then, it is medicine now. If it was hard then it is soft grief now. Grief unstiffens life and gives a river-like liquidity to the Holy who courts life into beauty. Anything else is all eternal warfare.”
What is praiseworthy about the work of this young woman Maryam is the way she has transformed her pain for the plight of her people and their land into a grief song which can soften our hearts and help metabolize our collective pain into life-affirming beauty. She is expressing an essential human capacity to transform curses into blessings, which is the deeply spiritual work we must all engage in to heal ourselves of the trauma of war to make a future possible for the children.
We should never miss the opportunity to praise what is praiseworthy, especially in the young, and to grieve what has been lost. This is how we celebrate life, remembering and honoring what we have loved and lost, without becoming hard-hearted, for it is this hard-heartedness which sows the seeds of the next war. Our grief songs transform our bitterness and pain into sweetness, and forever engaged in this process, our hearts can fully taste the richness of life, which is bittersweet.

Please cancel you upcoming event at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury! I was fired last week for speaking up for Palestine in my private life. I was doxxed, harassed and intimidated. Alhamdulillah, I have been a Muslim for 25 years. Muslims and supporters of Palestine should not play or attend any events at Town Hall Theater.

very nice
very nice maravilloso
Trop trop fort ❤❤
Gorgeous music! 71 generations is somewhat exaggerated - If you count five generations per century, 70 generations spans 14 centuries, ie 1,400 years - it is extremely doubtful that fully documented and authentic linear ancestry records exists in Mali.
I’m Malian and I can confirm you that it’s the thruth. We can Even retrace the lineage of our ancestors to something like 300 BC. Memory of our elders is something else
@@DeversBeats If it is documented, show me the documents. If it is transmitted orally, it is totally unreliable.
@@VeraNarishkin "The kora has at least two centuries of history, but is part of an even older tradition dating back to the 13th century Mali Empire of Sunjata Keita." a quick google search would have answered your question
@@FinalKaioken I wasn't talking about the instrument. Your quote is irrelevant in this discussion. The Keita surname is very common and widespread W in est Africa (mainly Mali Guinea and Ivory Coast; also Keïta and Kéita from the name of the Keita clan of the Mandinka people.
@@DeversBeats That memory is oral, not written, and it changes many times throught the ages. That is what always happens with oral traditions.

Absolutely magical! The Kora sounds for me like what a mystical dream wound sound like!!!
Mashallah so beautiful brother!! I’m starting to learn the Kora. What kind of pegs & strings do you use ? Keep posting your videos please!!
This is a Kaëlig built kora, using geared tuning pegs modeled on the old friction style of violins, cellos, etc. I have switched from fishing line (monofilament) to instrument grade nylon strings.
Very beautiful instruments and music!!Thank you very much for sharing your art with me.
