Yup - there's why I play this the way I do - the "slower" folks can't handle it most of the time ! :) I push Riff up here in Michigan more than I push Steve Harris or Pete Way . Riff was/is without a doubt my top "mentor/influence " for my bass style . Great capture ! Thanks for the upload . RIP & say Howdy to Danny Jo & Duane for us.
Thank you for posting this, Kirk. Tackle Box, Kevin Hanley, and I appreciate this, and remember that day very well. In fact, I'm wearing Riff's Levi shorts now (and even wear that famous brown Charlie Sheen shirt on occasion; we always each others shirts, Men's S & M, lol). It feels good and is wonderful to see Riff alive and well, prancin' all over that stage, and dancin' up and down that bass fretboard. He was my best buddy and I shared the last 6 years of his life with him, pretty much 24/7, so it's strange and difficult not having him to talk, laugh, share experiences with. Riff may have been a big-time rockstar in his earlier life (80s with Molly Hatchet Band, early 90s Foghat), but in his last 20+ years he was a simple man, and a generous man, hosting benefits for many fellow musicians in need, and always raising money for the animals. :) Iron Dave was Riff's dear friend, and Riff missed him horribly after he passed recently. Thankfully, they're with a few other dear friends & fellow musicians, in the ultimate, Divine Rock Band above, now. RIP, our beloved Riff: April 1, 1950 - November 19, 2014, who passed tragically at 64 years young. God bless you for sharing this with the world, Mr. Kirk Shockley.
Terri, I am still crushed for your loss. Even though this video could have better on so many levels, I'm glad my phone did capture what I thought to be a great moment on a rainy Florida afternoon. Who knew what was ahead for either of these good friends. I had told the wife about our texting and we were all to sit down over a lunch very soon and talk about the day. It's hard to view these 2 friends with out feeling the depth of the loss, but on this day, all was right with the world and warmth filled the stage in smiles.....it was my sincere pleasure Terri Stewart.
You nailed it!
FLSTS and SRV perfect combo
Mike with Iron Dave and Riff West in Sanford!
Riff Was Always My Favorite Hatchet Bassist. Like a Jaco Pastorius of Southern rock.
