    I saw a quick interview with the R&D department and grainydays. They said it is technically ISO 123 or something like that but over all testing came to the conclusion it should be sold as ISO 200. Also worth noting it's experimental film and will be refined over time.

    The company itself (in a video interview) says the film is really 123 ISO. So closer to 100 than 200. I am shooting at +2/3 right now, still need to develop the roll and see. Trying it for the first time and after 25 years of not shooting film. Super excited regardless of what happens.

    Oh. I've been wanting to learn how to scan and edit my own negatives for a while. Well, I guess this is as good an excuse as any, because I can't possibly make my Phoenix scans any worse than what they were from the lab.

    This supposedly cheap film costs the same as PORTRA 160 in Paris (69 Euro for a pack of 5). I don't know why this one is presented as cheap. Furthermore, there is no film more summery than Portra 160.

    So good I found this video before putting my first roll of Phoenix 200 into the camera. I scan and process my negatives on my own so the colour issues aren't that big of a deal for me. The underexposure is though, and I can see that underexposing even by one stop is problematic. Would you say it's a good idea to shoot this film at ISO 100 and develop normally? I'm specifically asking about "developing normally" because I'm not sure the lab I develop negatives allows me to push/pull my film.

    My experience with One Hundred is that on more than one occasion the roll of film has not been properly sealed or has come with some defect that causes light leaks that cause red streaks to appear in multiple exposures. And they are not flashes of light from the camera, because it has never happened to me with any Kodak, only with respooled film like Reflx Lab or Cinestill. Apart from this fact, the frames that come out well are great.

    I know that prices vary and it’s nice to a have this at 14€ with a different look and finer grain, but I think most people should really learn how to shoot Gold well. Once you have that down you can do so much with it and it’s still very affordable at a lot of places.

    Maybe I'm being a little harsh or overly demanding, but... if in 1966 the Olympus Pen FT could be made (I say this one and not the Pen F, because it has light metering), with incredible interchangeable glass lenses with which get bokeh without problem, completely manual, supreme quality, original in its design hiding the pentaprism, with a clean and elegant design... it is impossible to be excited about this camera, which is inferior in absolutely everything (except the weight...) . I know we live in another era, but hey, we should try to get closer to the bar of quality and design that was set in the middle of the last century...

    • @carmencitafilmlab_

      Of course, the problem is that the industry today is not even 1% of what is used to be back in the day. The same way we can't ask Harman to manufacture Portra400 on their first attempt of color film. To look at this a continuation of the past is the wrong perspective (sadly), but instead is a new beginning in an industry (film photography) that almost disapeared (died) 10 years ago and it's slowly coming back

    I for one am very disappointed in this camera. If memory serves, the Pentax Project promo videos kept emphasizing ease of use for beginners and the young crowd. Which a full auto focus point & shoot would have been the way go if you wanted to draw in so called beginners. Or something like the Nikon N55, a point & shoot SLR. You're gonna tell me things like zone focus and twin frame are things beginners are going to care about let alone even know about? That said, I will be buying one only to say, yes, I'm support the film community and want to see it survive, even if means purchasing a $500 Holga.

    • @spawnv2
      @spawnv2 2 місяці тому

      good point.. but zone focusing is not that hard even for beginners, everybody with functioning binocular vision can learn to estimate distance in a short period of time.. metering and judging exposure i think it is more challenging. Also take into account that this project is to set a platform to the other cameras that could come if this one sell good... they said they are thinking a range of cameras up until a full SLR

    • @VariTimo

      It’s not a toy it’s just a camera for beginners. It’s very well made and it seems to work reliably with a very good lens. Spend some time researching the project. It’s the first step. And it makes sense because point and shoots are the first cameras dying but also the easiest access point for new photographers. This a camera for new photographers, not necessarily for people who already have their go to film camera.

    I love that this film is not just just a Kodak/Fuji look-alike. As an artist I love the unpredictability. It is like surfing a wave. Sometimes it gives you joy, and sometimes it just dumps you in the water. My biggest worry is that Harmon/Ilford will replace this with a more "true to life" version that is very predictable, and then there will be no reason to choose it other than price. This film, on the other hand gives plenty of reason to choose it as a creative tool, much like choosing a Lomography film. Not so much true to life, as creative and stylized. Kodak and Fuji are bland, and unexciting in comparison. Phoenix is much more a roller coaster, with, as I would expect, results that range from blah to wonderful. You cannot cook something delicious without having the stove hot enough to burn the fingers :) I see lots of burnt fingers, but I also see some deliciousness.

    Just got my first Phoenix film back. Rated by the DX at 200 in an auto camera. Scan myself Epson flatbed at 2400 dpi. Also cheap Lidl camera type. Really interesting results. Flatbed fine but pretty dense, except when using flatbed software and it came up different, auto correction unexpected. In the cheap Lidle, SilverCrest on label it looks like Lomo Redscale. So different. At least it is sold as experimental. I think they might be aiming for a wide latitude film for all the basic cameras now out there. 50 to 800 asa!! I am going to get some more and see how it works in a Lomo Sardina and a Pentax K1000. Hopefully I will get a shot at sunny Spain as well as dull rainy England. But I agree, the scanning difference is really interesting.
