      @ngtmystery m5 countersunk washers. They are 14mm across with a 5mm hole. So I use a 15mm forstner bit first then a 5mm brad point bit after.

    Yeah I imagine the costly part of making these is the amount of consumables you'd go through (including thicknesser and bandsaw blades), especially if your setup is focussed around working timbers of soft-medium hardness. I wonder if a focussed v-hard setup would be closer to a machining setup? Sintered blades, cnc, diamond disks instead of sandpaper heh. Maybe danish oil as the cutting fluid 😂

    Taylormade thanks so much for the video, was great to see your process for making these beautiful holds - wow! If I might mention one thing, across a couple of places in your video the gain on your vocals for super high relative to other places and it was uncomfortable to listen to, most of the time the audio was great, but yeah in a few places it was just so much louder than at other times and it felt like it is distorting your voice a bit.

    • @taylormadeholds280

      I have about 5 different ones for the different holds and vary it quite a bit depending on how i want the hold to be. If its for a steep board then it doesn't need to be as large but for a vert board it needs to be larger for more comfort. 1/4 inch is a good starting place for a general crimp

    Why are you not using a planer for the thin boards? Are they too thin for safe planing? Great video, wooden hold making are my favorite UA-cam videos and my hobby as well.

    • @taylormadeholds280
      @taylormadeholds280 9 місяців тому

      The thin strips would get destroyed in a planer on their own. You can use the glue and tape method of temporary mounting them to a thicker board and then using the planer. Best practice is a drum sander. I don't have a drum sander but wanted to try and make one work with the wide belt sander. I had a go and it worked perfectly and is much quicker and probably better than mounting and planing them + spear thrower!

    Really nice work! I tried something similar out of some maple I had milled up but had a hell of a time routing the slots without a plunge router. Ended up ripping the slots with a table saw all the way across instead. Definitely not as good looking but easier to mass produce

    • @taylormadeholds280
      @taylormadeholds280 Рік тому

      I did think about that option but I had done the router method before and knew I could do it with a bit of time and effort. I have some ideas for my next fingerboard project that involves a glue up so I'm going to rip and stick, like the cheater method of making a tennon for the whole board 😀

    • @taylormadeholds280
      @taylormadeholds280 Рік тому

      Cheers, glad you liked the video. More coming soon. I don't know the angle, I usually set up the saw to match the wood rather than the other way round. I think its called reference measuring but realistically its just the most simple way and fastest way... doesn't matter if the holds are a few mm off they're not cabinets or furniture and i can make the corrections so they are perfectly mirrored with the sanding process:)

    • @jamestaylor5759
      @jamestaylor5759 Рік тому

      I usually go up to 180 on the backs of the holds and 120 of the face you grip so they still have some nice grain and texture. Sometimes I polish the backs after sanding all the way to 1000grit but always leave the edge you're going to hold at 100 or 120.
