On this video, I'm continuing from where I left off on the last video where there was a coolant leak after installing the external oil cooler. I fixed the leak and took it for the first test drive after the power upgrades. #racing #automobile #volkswagen #offroad #vw #automotive #jetta #tdi #turbo #performance #rally #sportwagen

50+ years ago we sold way more MC's & wheel cylinders for VW's then rebuild kits. IDK why they collected water, the bottom of the bores would have a huge pit, usually about 1/16"deep 1/4 to 5/8 wide & long. Also, there's air cooled VW mechanical sounds and there's rod knocks and there's wishful thinking!!
I’ve heard many rod knocks over my many years of being around motors. I’ve owned many trucks with my businesses and motors go bad. They’ve usually sounded liked a sledge hammer inside the motor. I didn’t hear that with this little 1600. That being said I won’t be making the mistake of not refreshing the bottom end again.
yeah, i mean you could hear that thing clattering like it had no oil in it but you took it down the road without a care in the world anyways and question if there's a hole in the block. i could tell you what happened without looking at the engine.
I’ll never just put a fresh top end on a motor then send it again. Freshen up the bottom end also always.
Geez how did you not hear that awful rod knock?! Good lord
Especially upon throttle release, Surprised it ran it being so bad😟
Geez how did you not hear that awful rod knock?! Good lord
I couldn’t when I was driving because the exhaust was so loud but once I watched the video I’m like was that motor knocking from the get go? Oh well got a rebuildable long block coming next week. The buggy will be up and running in no time.
Didn't Sound good from start.... To be true, it's sound horribly wrong from start....
That sounded like it has no oil pressure or worse right from the start!
I tore the motor down today, publishing now. There was definitely some wear in the pump and bearings which would cause low oil pressure. Next time I rebuild an old motor it will be in its entirety not just the top end. Check out today’s video to see the damage. Thanks
You broke it!!😢
Yes it’s broken. Check out today’s video to see the extent of the damage.
Ouch!
Hell yeah, that thing is sweet
Nice. Good stuff
Thank you
Nice work!
Thank you
But do you actually tow anything?
It is an automotive channel so….🤔
One of my uncles had one of those type of looking buggy's and back in either late 80's or ever early 90's. He asked my dad to so some work on it in order to get the buggy running. I can't quite remember what was wrong with it but clearly remember the buggy used a 6V system. Once my dad got it running we took it for a ride around a lake that's like 20 miles from where we live.
Which mirrors did you get? I was worried if i bought the tow mirrors they'd be angled up in the air.
I got them off of Amazon. They fit nice and were plug and play on the truck besides the ditch light. a.co/d/hEIl5P8
Sweet! Is it 4x4?
No sir
Looks like it's ran a lot of ethanol fuel in it's life
Lil wd40 and your back in action
Smile, good.
Shut up what’s up?🎉
Nice 👌
New project to follow? What plans you have for this? In my neighborhood, there is very similar to this buggy resting at the back of a shed. I have been tempted to go and ask, but so far been able to resist...
We’re still tossing ideas around. My first thought was full tube chassis, long travel suspension including A arm front end and 3x3 trailing arms in the back. We have a 2.0 motor out of a Jetta with the adapter plate on the way. That will initially go into Frankenbuggy until the Subaru 2.0 is built. If I go the off road route with this buggy the Jetta motor will end up in it. If we build a ripping street cruiser out of it it will still get a full tube chassis but the motor will be a turbo 1835 that we also have in the works. What would you like to see become of this buggy given the options? Ultimately our builds are for you our subscribers to enjoy watching them being built.
do you have the beginning of this video that shows taking everything off before this video.
Do you have the first part of this whole video starting from the beginning. I can't seem to find it

That's a Suzuki LT250r quad racer?
Yes it is
Very good!
Beautiful! Great work!
Thank You
You should narrow it down a little. Maybe 2 inches. On mine I have dropped spindles with discs and the wheels are very close to the fender If I did it again, I would have narrowed the front axle. Good Luck
We’re going to be narrowing the beam by 4 inches👌🏻
@@Wineingerracing perfect! 2 inches by side!
@JeanMelim that’s the plan!
What's going on with that awesome GMC back there?
It’s going to be a drag truck, i put the short block together a few videos back!
Good shirt, good swap 👍
Hey, On my old buggy I built a support for the protective arch with an extra tube hidden inside the fiber body and ending a little further forward where the chassis begins to narrow the angle. For aesthetic reasons, I placed the protective arch a little more inclined, almost following the direction of inclination of the windshield. In the protective arc tube I made a support with a metal sheet that coincided with another support that was in the tube hidden in the fiber body. And another support on the base fixed to the car chassis. This made it solid and with extra protection on the sides, I also gained a little more rigidity in the body/chassis assembly. Greetings and good construction
planetabuggy.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/pronto_01.jpg In this photo you can see the transition from the protective arch to a rectangular tube that ended next to the backet. This was the first version I made on my buggy. The final version was as I tried to explain above. And here is the link to the only photos I have of him. I built it in 2010 and sold it in 2012... planetabuggy.com.br/buggy-de-jean/
Not sure how I’m going to handle the roll bar on this one. I don’t like how it comes down on top of the cast shock mounts. I will probably do some structure off the torsion housing. I’m going to be building a higher performance buggy, full size pan. Thinking it will be a total tube chassis, long travel and big motor.
@@Wineingerracing see the Manxter full roll cage to ideas
Where did you get your kit?
ECS Tuning
From what i could see, whoever shortened the shift rod misaligned it, when welding it up.
I’ve got it hitting all the gears now and you have to push down on the shifter to get it in reverse now. It took some fudging around and it was quite frustrating but it’s all good now. I’ll be posting a video tomorrow if it working perfectly.
Are you sure about that?
Are you sure about that?
A little sarcasm. Definitely wasn’t firing.
Love the commentary
2:18 Thats a lot of lube.
So nice!
❤😊
Hi, i have heard that re-using the lower timing chain cover can cause oil leaks, have you experienced any?
People reuse it but it’s recommended to replace because when removing it you can bend the cover causing it to not seal properly when reinstalled.
@@Wineingerracing Ok thanks for the reply :) Where did you buy your new chain and tensioners, any recommendations for brands? Also what type of silicone did you use?
OE or OE equivalent is fine. I got the timing chain kit from ECS Tuning and it comes with everything you’ll need👍🏻
Blown headgasket for sure!
Water went down the exhaust through an open valve and into the cylinder.
@@Wineingerracing it was a joke bud.... it's an air cooled engine, I was trying to stir the comment section up.
@@woodchopinbeekeeper929 Thank you for that. Lol!!! You’d be surprised how many people don’t know what they are looking at here.
If you can find (or make) some sidepods for it, that red one would be an excellent base for a Wonderbug repro.
Alternator bearing?
Possibly. I’m replacing the alternator with a new one. The end of the armature has 1/2 the threads stripped off.
Hey Turbo!!!
He’s starting to like the camera. He used to avoid being in the shot. Lol!!!
How did you like it?
Amazing how easily and clean it made the cut. I look forward to using it in a wide variety of applications and see how it works. I think I’ll be wondering what took me so long to get one.
What kind is that?
ARCCAPTAIN Plasma Cutter
What’s up with that opel gt in the background? My dad has been into those my whole life. I even had a 60’s Opel gt.
We plan on restoring it but with a Miata drivetrain👌🏻 Check out the tear down videos we did on it!
What is that,? A rear-end? Another dump truck
The differential of a VW bug transaxle. I expected to see carnage in the transmission but everything there looked good. The mystery continues. Lol!!!

Unfortunately this motor isn’t worth what the repairs would cost.
