Re-centring ecoliteracy: Educating for the future
For the leaders of today and especially of tomorrow, being able to understand the natural systems that make life on earth possible is essential for making ecologically sound decisions. But does our education system equip learners with the skills and knowledge to act with integrity and courage?
Educators Louise Robertson and Richard Hainsworth discuss how educators are working to grow the ecologically literate, systemic thinkers we need now and for the future.
This event was broadcast on 1 October 2024 and is the fourth event in our "Regenerating our World" discussion series.
About the series:
Regenerating our world is a discussion series exploring the issues that underpin our transition to a just, sustainable future - from what it means to be an active “citizen” of place and planet, to how we create thriving and abundant food-systems now and into the future. This series is a collaboration between RSA Oceania, the RSA Sustainability Network and IdeaSpies.
Speakers:
Louise Robertson is a distinguished educational leader and the founder of The Sustainables Academy (thesustainablesacademy.com/), an educational platform that aims to support teachers and leaners to understand the importance of our biosphere and its resources.
Richard Hainsworth is a dedicated teacher and supporter of youth entrepreneurship and future skills. In 2021, he founded UpRising (www.uprisingdesigners.org/), a design-led entrepreneurship program that offers senior high school students the opportunity to connect with business and industry to accelerate their ideas, test prototypes and design projects.

No we are descendants from our pre-flood earth. All the modern stories were people came back to Fiji, were descendants of our gigantic ancestors who colonised the world before anybody else did.

Brilliant conversation. Thank you!!. Iove Giles' line that helps reframe consciousness being sourced in Kosmos (Nature): "...we are not perceiving reality, reality is perceiving itself through us!".

This is such an important conversation. We need to be having it everywhere. We have come from nature and go back to nature. While regenerative is a paradigm mindset change for many it is a going home, and reconnecting to something already in us. Which to me is super exciting, it should be possible. More of these conversations and exemplars of those taking action. Education has a huge role to play.
