NYMR Steam Gala September 2023
From clips taken during my recent trip to the UK, the video shows the NYMR's 2023 Autumn Steam Gala's activity on the line, and many behind the scenes at the engine shed, as well as at the various stations along the line.
Aspects of the line's history are shown and described as we travel and the many resident and visiting preserved steam locos work hard, all due to the efforts of the line's staff and many volunteers.
The spectacular 19 mile heritage line and its neighbourhood are well worth visiting for a fascinating experience in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The video portrays the 4 day Spring Steam Gala of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, (KWVR), held in March 2023. It shows gala operations along the line from Keighley to Oxenhope and return to Ingrow West as the weather changed from heavy snow to sunshine and thaw. The snowy weather and steam engines together conspired to deliver a magical scene for all who attended to enjoy. Some of the li...

This is the first video of my model railway layout. It was originally created for an October 2020 model rail event in the USA and has now been edited to remove references to that event, in that movie, that are no longer germane.
Very nice video Allan :)
Thank you, Simon. Your comment is much appreciated.
Super Video!
Thank you very much - your very kind comment is much appreciated.
Nice video
Thank you, Josh. I know how much you like visiting the NYMR so I’m especially glad you enjoyed the video. Have a happy Easter.
@@atlantaman Thanks. Happy Easter to you as well.
A wonderful video from a wonderful line.
Thank you for your very kind comment and for subscribing. Yes, the KWVR is a great line and a top favourite of mine when I can get back over to the UK.. (As you will note, I don’t post very often and I declined YT “earner” status when signing up.)
@@atlantaman Thanks for your reply. I don't mind if you don't post often, it will be worth the wait for quality vids like this. BTW I never knew about the trestle viaduct. I've looked on the old maps and sure enough I can see the route of it.
Nice video. Like me!
Thank you. I’m pleased you enjoyed it.

A very good video, the trains were excellent as was the scenery. A big thank you to all the volunteers who made this video possible.
Thank you for watching and your comment, I’m pleased you enjoyed the video and, yes: no volunteers = no gala = no video.
Great video and narration.
Thank you for watching and commenting so kindly, Alison. Much appreciated.
Fantastic footage!!! Well done 👍
Thank you for watching and commenting. Greeting to you all in Poland.

Hi Allan - just viewed this fantastic video of the Gala with Judith and very impressed with the content. The early morning captures of the shed scenes were very eye catching and another nice look inside a signal box. Very factual and educational commentary that made the video very engaging and interesting. Nice views of the building and bridges near the railway with some historical information included. Oh yes and the steam loco action wasn't bad either! A super viewing experience. Cheers - Allan.
Thank you for watching and for your most generous comments, Allan. It is very pleasing that you enjoyed the video. (Yes, I thought it useful to include a few steamers as well! lol)
Lovely video Allan, good information too. I enjoyed watching the steam trains running including Sir Nigel Gresley. I love it there at NYMR, such a great place to visit. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Josh
I very much appreciate your comments, Josh, since your own videos show you visit the NYMR frequently and know the line well. I’m pleased you enjoyed the video: thank you for watching.
Worst Heritage Railway in the Country
Sorry you have come to that conclusion. But, I hope you don’t feel that way about the volunteers’ efforts.
Very interesting and well done. Another great video, Allan.
Thanks Lee. Pleased you enjoyed it - your kind comments are appreciated.
A very enjoyable video Allan. Some fantastic views from the NYMR gala with informative and interesting commentary throughout. Highlights for me were the early morning shed scenes, double headers and a great shout out for the LNERCA. Well done. Cheers, Jeff.
Many thanks for watching and your comments. I’m pleased you enjoyed it. I wanted to show some of the broader aspects of what’s offered and to enjoy at the NYMR. The LNERCA has long attracted my admiration for the valuable heritage work they do.
First class footage Allan , you did a fantastic job of covering the Gala with this well put to gether video , so much detail as well with your naratif , and nice to see our favorite walk back when the sun was shinning ...
Thanks Dave for watching and kind comment. Yes, that walk is most pleasant aspect of an NYMR visit.
An excellent account of the gala. Very interesting and atmospheric. Loved the Fireman's breakfast!
Thanks Andy, glad you enjoyed it. That breakfast was a most memorable experience: cordon bleu cooking on a shovel by Jim - a great guy.
This video is a good companion to “An illustrated history of the NYMR” by Philip Benham, free to borrow at Internet Archive.
Thank you for that useful comment. I’m pleased you enjoyed it.
did 52044 get a new smokebox door?, i remember it having a more conventional one as opposed to the midland styled one.
Regrettably I cannot answer your question - I don’t know. Sorry, but, thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed the vid.
Very well produced video.
Thank you - your comment is much appreciated.
A fine video and narration , it took me back to my past when I knew Walter and the man who went with him to crown the Herring Queen,. All the best from Scotia.
Thank you, Robert, for watching and commenting so kindly. Best wishes to you all in Scotland.

Excellent video!
Thank you for your kind comment. I am pleased you enjoyed the video. Best wishes to you all in Ukraine. 👍🇺🇦
Loved this video! Loved the sounds which you captured quite well. In my opinion the steam era was the peak of railroad glory. There was a beauty and an elegance to it all that today's 'modern' style just doesn't match. I'm SO glad to see there are people who still value this era's style, and volunteer to keep it alive and well!
I’m most pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you for your kind words. Regardless of how much technology has changed the passengers’ ride and comfort, I fully agree with you that the steam era’s beauty and elegance have been left behind: but not lost, thanks to the many selfless volunteers with whom we are blessed. But, obviously, without passengers and visitors, funding for maintenance, restoration and operation would be gone. And, the patent pleasure and enjoyment they experience no doubt reward the volunteers, letting them know their efforts are appreciated and worthwhile: which they are.
5:21 - Windsor Ontario and 2 freighters. Clever, backgrounds on the wall on the other side of the aisle. Very nice!
Pleased you enjoyed Jerry’s layout. Thanks for watching.
Great layout the track work is outstanding. I model a small part of the B.A.R. & C.V. & Rutland in a medium size, HO layout I call the Green Mountain & Maine, Thanks for the cab ride! Bob Rainey
Glad you enjoyed the ride and, yes, Jerry’s work is outstanding. I passed your comment on to him and he expressed his thanks to you for them.
Incredible, there has to be over 50 switches to throw. Looks like someone chased a dream to the end. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Glad you liked and admired Jerry’s layout. In fact, since shooting that video, he has continued to build and has added another large section full of incredible detail, which we hope to record soon.
great video
Thank you. Your comment is much appreciated.
Wow ,, great detail . Wonder what the scale is and what the size of that building is .. That is years and years of work. Retired rr from the CN Rail.
Indeed, Joe, the amount of detail Jerry has achieved is remarkable. Scale is H0; layout is approx 25x25ft. Jerry, now retired but still enhancing the layout, worked for NYC in Michigan. Thanks for watching and commenting; pleased you enjoyed the video and layout.
Awesome
Yes, but Jerry’s layout is even more so when visited.
Very nice layout and video. Thanks for posting.
Thank you. I’ll pass your praise along to Jerry. Of course, no video or photo could equal actually visiting his meticulously detailed layout.
Incredibly well filmed wow!

What a fantastic video. Nothing beats steam locos in the snow! Not only is it beautifully filmed, but both sound and vision are of the most exceptional quality. Thank-you for sharing.
Your very generous comments are much appreciated, Pete. I’m extremely pleased you enjoyed the video. The captivating spectacle of the steamers doing their work during the snow almost eliminated the bitter coldness felt during videoing. Thank you for watching.
seriously impressed with the superb quality of this layout imaginative lighting effects especially
Thank you, David, for your generous comment. A few more things done since making this video - not as much progress as I would like, though.

Thank you to each and every one for all the inspiring comments. The video was done by my very good friend from the U.K. "Atlanta Man"
Wonderful video and the engines are a spectacular sight in the snow. I would love to visit this railway one day!
I sincerely wish you do get to experience the KWVR and the charms of the Worth valley itself, Peter. Thank you for your kind comment, I’m pleased you enjoyed the video. Your pots look lovely. 👍
Amazing video, brings back many happy days spent smelling Steam! Often in the company of a dear departed friend John Prett of Huddersfield. Dear John I do hope your still enjoying Steam!
Thank you for your comment. I’m most pleased it helps you to recall happy days spent with a valued friend.
Thank you! …another EXCELLENT video, and informative too! I saw your video on the KWVR (excellent video), so that is what led me to this one. (I had never ridden the KWVR, but I HAD ridden the NYMR (25 years ago), so I thought I’d see how you treated a railroad that I was familiar with. Your video was excellent! (When I rode the NYMR, I rode the train from Pickering to Goatland, and walked from there to Grossmont (that was as far as steam went, back then), rode the train back, requesting Newtondale Halt. I walked from there, back to Levisham and caught the train from there back to Pickering, quite a nice mix of railfan-ing, and nature hiking)
Thank you for watching this video and your kind comment. I guess you particularly enjoyed that lovely Goathland to Grosmont walk tracing the old Stephenson line and seeing the remains of the original stations (depots) and infrastructure: it’s a lovely walk and perhaps a railfan’s bucket list item. I hope to attend this year’s forthcoming Steam gala, if I can fly over to it. Not sure if I’ll do another video though.
Wonderfu, such a informative and gentle commentary!
Thank you very much: your kind comment is appreciated.
Thank you, Sir! This is an excellent video: very well produced. The weather, both the snowy days and the sunny day, made for very nice effects and background. The locomotives and coaches looked BEAUTIFUL! The volunteers must have worked very hard! Your videography was excellent. I very much enjoyed your narration. The narration and the on-screen notes were very informative, and made your excellent video even more enjoyable. Again, Thank You, Sir!
Thank you so much for your most kind response to the video. I am delighted it has given pleasure to you and others who have watched. Being at that gala was a magical experience that created a memory I will always treasure.
Very well made film, and I was stunned by the quality of the narration. You are very knowledgeable about the British (preserved) railways, the locomotives and its terminology, and only a few words used reveal you're American. Eg. mainline excursion, which is referred to as a mainline tour in the UK. The photography was outstanding, helped by the late winter weather not uncommon to the UK, I had such an occasion when visiting a steam gala on the Severn Valley Railway several years ago. O, and I think the "porter" at Hawort actually was the station master or one of his assistants giving the trains right of way.
Well, Tom, you are exceedingly kind with your comments and I am very grateful for them and for watching the video. Indeed we over here in America enjoy learning about preserved railways et al in the “old country” and visiting them if possible. I admit America and the UK are two nations divided by a common language and you spotted that fact in the commentary (mea culpa) and you are right to correct me: thank you. If you peruse the comment made by Mr. C.J. Sheehan you will see he also corrected me for having erroneously called him a “porter”: he is the Foreman at Haworth, apparently. I hope to meet him on my next trip to the line and to practice my real English a little more (and enjoy a pint or three of that wonderful warm beer the Brits serve). Perhaps we can share a “jar” or two? I’ll look forward to it.
@@atlantaman Thanks for your reaction to my comment. I'm also not a born Brit, but from the Netherlands, sharing the same interest in the UK railway scene Despite the fact that I do not live there I visited many of the UK preserved railways , and I'm even a member involved in a group restoring a couple of one off preserved diesel locomotives over there, putting in some physical effort a couple of times a year. In my opinion the UK has a great beer culture having all these micro breweries which make the most wonderful tastes.
@@Tom-Lahaye Actually, Tom, I was born in England, raised there but now live in Georgia. I apologize if I misled you. However, perhaps the local American vernacular is creeping into my expressions. I admire your volunteer efforts you mention and feel sure from my video you will know how much I applaud all heritage rail volunteers. My offer of a beer or two stands, if we ever meet. 🍺👍
@@atlantaman That's great, I volunteer at the East Lancashire Railway, and visit the SVR often, so maybe one day we can have a couple of pints 🍻.
@@Tom-Lahaye Indeed. I was at the ELR gala, the week after the KWVR, featuring FS, LofL and the pug. Got soaked through both days. Haven’t processed a video of it: probably won’t. 🍺
The snow makes most of the footage look authentic 1950s, just the occasional modern building gives it away.
Thanks for commenting. Actually, when doing my voice over stuff, I restrained myself from mentioning one particular “structure”, which I regard as a tasteless, poorly built design. That aside, I hope you enjoyed the video and appreciate your watching.
Good video, like .
Thank you. Your comment is much appreciated.
