    Once I obtain the correct measurement, is this something that this able bodied homeowner can accomplish? My concerns are that we live where we can expect annual hurricane level winds. The fireplace is strictly gas burning. I just started looking, so I will consider your company in my selection process. Thanks and Blessings!

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep 2 місяці тому

      Hi thanks for watching and for considering our company. At this time we serve only select areas on the Kansas/Missouri border. To answer your question: Some could, but most people should not attempt it themselves. Yes, hypothetically speaking, an able bodied person who also has good math/measurement skills, experience with heavy duty ladders, a solid understanding of safe roof walking, and fundamental knowledge of using tools, plus all the right supplies... yes, that person is likely capable to accomplish a basic cap installation (and that person sounds like they're probably already in the home improvement industry or someone who should apply for our apprenticeship program!!) Overall, no, we do not recommend any DIY chimney or fireplace repairs to anyone who is not certified, because there's a lot more to consider when it comes to chimneys than the cap... the whole system must work together to ensure safe burning of a fireplace. Most homeowners do not have the proper PPE/safety gear to work on their own roof and that alone creates an unnecessary danger. Here's a post that may be of interest: fullservicechimney.com/why-you-should-never-diy-a-chimney-masonry-project-yourself/

    I had my cap replaced 20 years ago because water was coming down the chimney. Now I can hear a noise with the wind and a guy wants $1,000 to examine the chimney and a replace the cap. Sounds expensive when I might beable to lubricate the cap instead.

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep Місяць тому

      $1000 does sound expensive for an just an inspection by itself... unless you have multiple fireplaces or the repairs are bundled into the price, then it could be justified. Good you got a cap to help stop the rain. Wind/noise could have a variety of reasons and requires a full inspection to determine the cause. ~ NOTE: IF a chimney has not been inspected and cleaned in 20 years, repairs will likely run a lot more than $1000... in truth could end up being many thousands on a neglected system that has not had proper maintenance over the years. The NFPA recommends chimneys get inspected annually and cleaned when needed. 🚩If you have someone offering to inspect and repair your chimney and they're giving you a flat rate fee before ever examining it in person, I would ask to see that person's certifications. A certified inspector will carry an ID badge and have #'s that you can verify. The fact is, most chimneys are very unique, one is almost never like another, so if someone has not already inspected the system there is no way for them to know for sure what all is wrong or needs replaced or repaired (especially on a system that has been used or neglected for 2 decades.) That answer is probably more than you wanted, BUT when safety is involved the details matter. Best of luck and thanks for watching friend!

    I need a cap for a triple flue, I had recommendations from several chimney sweeps. Some recommended a cathedral type and others a rectangular cap, which would keep out the rain best? The broad side of the chimney faces north where the prevailing wind and rain comes from. My concern is that the rain would come in through the screen mesh.

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep Місяць тому

      Without seeing it we cannot make any official recommendations since every home system is different, and often requires unique solutions. With that said, Multi-flue caps are probably your best bet, people like them and we have great luck with them. Great info. One of the challenges I'm having is heavy windy rain getting into the flue, even with a cap on. So I'll have water building up in the clean out. Are there newer kinds of caps that help deal with this kind of issue?

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep 9 місяців тому

      Have a certified technician help you and look into your options for your specific setup. Look into Damper Caps that will allow you to fully control (open and close) the top damper from inside your home and that helps stop the rain, wind, pest, and cold air drafts. Also please note that LEAKS are often caused by a variety of other factors and the cap is not always the problem. Best of luck and thanks for watching friend!

      @@FSCsweep Thanks. I had a chimney pro take a look. He said the heavy wind driven rain is very problematic, but chimney the crown and cap is structurally sound. I keep seeing opposite opinions on that one. Thanks a lot!

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep Рік тому

      Thanks for your question! There are multiple manufacturers of chimney caps with the optional feature of bolt on lids. Having used many of them over the years, the most common size fastener size is 1/4 inch, by 20 thread. This is true regardless of the fastener being used is bolt, hex nut or as in your case, wing nut. (Having said that, the older I get, the more often I'm exposed to “I never saw that before”:) . How much a chimney cap replacement normally cost?

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep Рік тому

      To answer your question, price depends on the product, the area and the chimney service company you use for services. If you're in the USA, then I'd visit csia.org to search your zip code for a Certified Chimney Sweep near you. Often, one way you can save on the expense of a new cap is to bundle the cap installation with your annual cleaning and inspection so you don't have to pay twice for the trip or labor time. Just remember that cap quality is important! We always recommend Stainless Steel Caps. If you decide to pay less for a cheap aluminum or one-size-fits all style cap, it will cost more in the long run in other damages to the chimney and the home. Here's an example of just one of the issues: fullservicechimney.com/roof-rust-and-your-chimney/

      While there are some specialty caps that imply they can assist draft (usually suggesting that using wind, the cap will draw more) we found they never produce additional draft. 20% and above is common as soon as you split it, wood that was cut about 4 mos ago. It'll burn, but it's still considered green. "Seasoned" (legally here in Maine) really means 1 year of drying after being split and stacked. Common MC (moisture content) for that is about 11%. Best you'll get if you cut wood in spring, split/stack/air dry and check it in October is about 17% or so, and that's GOOD. The next year, it'll be 'seasoned' to that 11 or 12 percent. Irrelevant...anything under 20% is fine to burn if you know what you're doing. But in my state, if you sell wood as 'seasoned', you BETTER be able to back it up; serious business around here, LOL. Maine out.

    If you lite the fire property the green pile would have burned..not sure what fancy lighting cube you used but you can heat your home with green wood.

      No lighting cubes here!🤭Burning green wood is NOT recommended for many reasons. Burning green wood becomes hazardous indoors, as it requires more fuel, more heat... and bigger fires that create more smoke than you want... all of these things create more creosote that solidifies in the chimneys flue; which is a fire hazard, and can even create opportunity for Carbon Monoxide problems to start. Furthermore, guess what happens later if you're lucky 🍀and nothing too bad happens? It will eventually cost the homeowners more to fix the property damage caused by unnecessarily poor burning practices. 💲💲💲 *STAY SAFE and SAVE money by burning the good seasoned wood!

      @@FSCsweep didn't say green wood was the best for heating, but it can be used. I remember one fall brother and I returned to the farm after being away a spell. No dry wood but we cut and burned green wood the way our father showed us if need be. Ya have to run a rod through the chimney more often, but you can heat with green wood. Brother and I are living testament, put the long Canadian winter in no problem.

      @@joedirt9600 that's true and certainly a great thing your father showed you how to clean the chimney more often... Thanks Dad! 👏It's necessary for sure.

      You can burn green wood in doors. You can also operate a vehicle after a few drinks. Both are within physical capability, but bad ideas due to unnecessary increase in hazards

    Should have been a boy scout. Fires are started from the bottom. That way the draw created in the Flue engages all the wood from Bottom to top. This was pretty Lame.

    This wasn't a smoke test. It was more of a burn test lol. Can't judge the smoke level on wood that isn't burning. Should've tried at least

      That' s the point, the left pile of green wood was not burning at all, aparently...

    • @TiCail50
      @TiCail50 3 роки тому

      Yes, of course it's going to be a lot harder to start and burn like crap, but to see the smoke coming from it would've been a more interesting side by side

    • @FSCsweep
      @FSCsweep Рік тому

      @@TiCail50 yes, it would be interesting to see that comparison! Honestly we may have gotten more smoke if the green wood fire was by itself rather than having both of them in the same fireplace side by side... as someone else mentioned in the comments, it's likely the draft from the good dry pile was assisting the smoke from the wet wood.
