Came across this lovely module by chance - CEM3374 and CEM3378, wow! Easy to mod as well :) gave it some more filter responses, more FM/FFM depth, and bumped the signal level up a bit. Micro-mono-xpander-light, heh...

See here: maffez.com/?page_id=4887. Just a couple of improvised notes demoing some modifications I did on a MS5. These would work on a Roland SH5 too, of course! (see here: modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4256398)

Syncussion SY-1 MSW and Behringer
Переглядів 3,5 тис.3 місяці тому
This is an entirely senseless comparison between the MSW SY-1 and the Behringer SY-1 followed by some nonsensical MODDED Behringer SY-1 clip (with delay fx etc.). Not all modes were used in the comparison, and the decay setting is not ideally matched (though one unit has a slightly different response curve), also VCO B was kept as calibrated from factory, so some Modes (B and E, for instance) s...
Prophet 5 and Moog Muse

Little a/b between Moog Muse and Sequential Prophet 5, Rev4. Some sounds are not super well matched, yet his is neither a preset showcase nor some synth player flex; I was just interested in how close they can get for some basic sounds and wanted to share that. Let's face it; someone had to do it. So why not start at the very bottom of the barrel and then work our way up? Four little "interventions" by you know who. My gratitude to Bachcentral for their midi files. More along my usual (and hopefulyl less incompetent) lines, some technical insights into the Muse: maffez.com/?page_id=4776

De-and-re-modded TD-3-MO-SR (MOSER)

Looks like a monster truck toy and is called like a traditional Styrian farmer? The "Moser" somehow landed on my bench, and I did some mods. Mods when it is already mosered-out? Well, sure. I deactivated most of the weird blinkenlights, did a PSU mod for warble, adjusted the square wave, implemented FM from the filter out (forgot to tape that), and did a whole lot of other things - manual slide...

Behringer Cat Synthesizer - Filter Insert Modification
In your instrucuons you talk about wiring to a CV in, but there are no CV inputs? Perhaps i am confused.
this implies that you can/have to instal a CV input socket somewhere. :)
@maffezsynthmods ohhhhh. I received a BSII free, covered in paint. I'm currently stripping it down and taking it apart to clean and refurbish, and found your modifications. I *want* to mod it, but I'm feeling out of my league already 😅
@@evilrainbow oh, i see! well, the acid filter mod is easy (to test as well), and if in doubt, maybe check back with someone who has a bit of experiecne with electronics - great way to make friends too :)
@maffezsynthmods I do have a friend who runs a pedal building company! I'm receiving a Circuit Mono Station soon, which does have CV. I'll examine it and see how similar the boards are.
@maffezsynthmods I read more closely and see that you have listed plenty of CV points to patch into 🤦♀️
That sub osc sounds so good
Brilliant... thank you.😊❤ Where has the main volume been relocated ? Peace.
Main vol, knob is still where it used to be; i just recycled the headphones vol/out space since phones volume is way too loud anyways and i thought thats a nice location for a patchbay :)
@maffezsynthmods sweet. thanks for the reply, just have to wait for my warranty to expire. ✌️ ☮️ 🇦🇺 🪃 🇦🇺 🪃
You are clever!
Hi. I saw your MS5 modifications, will you be making these kits for sale at some stage ? Thanks in advance. ✌️ ❤.
Hey, this would be best placed in a ms5 vid :) gerbers are online, so anycone can make these. The panel gerbers will be up soon, too!
@maffezsynthmods thanks for the reply , I only posted here as I only saw a FB post Link re the MS5 MOD .. while I was researching my Behringer SY1 Christmas present . Thanks for the reply. Merry Christmas.
@@gixerags750 all good! :)

Cool Sounds Maff :)
so what are all of the implications for individual voice out? Can you pan voices individually for a big stereo spread?
Yeah, of course, butbthats only half of the story. With the unique p5 voice allocation mode you can do much more elaborate fx-per voice things.
@ sounds really cool but isn’t it extremely inconvenient to plug in 5 separate outputs…?
@@jibberish00 depends on what you're after. for simple mono out sounds there's still a mono out, and single outs are useful for my purposes while I find the classic panorama mod just unneccessary.
@maffezsynthmods can you link the panorama mod? I have a Rev4 and the only thing I really want to do is pan voices individually
@@jibberish00 you can find that easily with online search - best
Behringer should hire Maffez to be involved in the design process so they can produce his mods factory.
can you remove the keyboard cleanly?
Yep, but you need a bit if panel/vinyl cover for the front (there are some holes there)
Great work!
Bring it !!!! Great work. !
Hi, what synth were you using as a controller at the start? Cheers
Thats an mfb dominion1 (which i should have kepttt)
@maffezsynthmods 😔 😟, thanks for the reply.
... You connected the FM linear jack socket for fm 2 on the 470R resistor between 10N capacitor, fm input doesn't go directly to pin 13......fm1 is also wrong based on my observation!
Sure you can use 100nf in between as suggested in the cem datasheet! I didnt in some examples. Often i do lin fm with less than 1m also.
@maffezsynthmods ...I may have expressed myself incorrectly, sorry! I wanted to say that you have drawn the connection for the FM1 incorrectly in the photo of PCB!!! There should be a resistance marked further to the left, on 471R! You have marked 01E as the connection! But I have a question, there is a mark for Soft Sync on the same photo! Is this a soft sync INPUT that goes to a jack output? If so, should the socket be a switchable socket? Best regards
@maffezsynthmods .. On the picture where the connections for FM are indicated, a SOFT SYNC connection is also marked! Is that a connection for a sync input jack? I would love to do this mod. I would be very happy about an answer.
@@maikmario71 just check the soft sync section, thats an entire paragraph on the;matter: maffez.com/?page_id=932 hope 5is helps
Hello, I would like to install the FM mod on my own, according to your description I know where I have to solder the 1M resistor on the PCB of the Neutron. But I don't know which input sockets I should solder these 1M resistors to? AmOSC1 and OSC2, or IN: Sum1(A) and Sum2(B) ??? Soft sync has nothing to do with the FM change?

can you change the pitch bend range to 1 octave or 2 octaves?
That part is all digital, so its a matter of firmware.
@@maffezsynthmods so lame it can't even pitch bend 1 octave! Behringer needs to learn sometimes keeping it to original spec is dumb!

Damn. Wish you did a mod for the minilogue xd
Never played the xd but justout of interest, what are you after?
@@maffezsynthmods making the filter juicier and resonance better. That's really it. Increasing modulation matrix options would be nice but prob not feasible.
Why do some have buttons and other don’t?
Do you mean the diy run with the included sequencer? I was too late for that one.
@@maffezsynthmods what i really meant is how are you playing this? hahahaha do you have a midi keyboard connected to it?
@@thelivingmanpart2 ah, okay! Played with a tt303 mkii :)
amazing. the BD sounds so good pitched down and decayed out. edit: is it possible to swap out the transistors in the distortion circuit or do something to mod the distortion circuit to have a different sound? maybe even put a tone knob? and a MIX knob to send BOTH clean and distorted signals?
Thanks! As for the distortion, I usually replace that since modding that doesnt seem worthwhile. I rather use the controls for other stuff.
are there any mods for the TD-3-MO?
Check my website :)
@@maffezsynthmods whoa, cooool. I'm def getting an RD9 now
Is the msw worth the extra penny
Sound is awesome snd build quality too. No regrets having passed on my og pearl.
Which is which?
@@AlexFainDj they sound a bit diffeent, right? :)
@@maffezsynthmods yes but which sounds better? The original I guess.
@@AlexFainDj for my purposes i like the msw/pearl more, yes, but the beh sounds a tad harder and clicky, which can be good for impact, like kick drum sounds. Haptic/mechanical aspects are much more to my liking with the msw though, faders go like butter but not too fast, which is not a problem on the beh for some sound aspects but i feel esp the tune fader goes too fast for its range and makes stuff weird when you wiggle (hope this makes sense). General sound character of the beh is not half bad though!
Thanks for doing this.
Nice
Hello Maffez! First of all, thnks for sharing all your wisdom. I’ve got a question: i’ve just downloaded and tried your decay slider adj mod but I couldn’t make it work. When you’re saying left pin, how are you seeing the pot? From the front or the back of the pcb? And, which is the nearest ground point? Thank u sooo much.
Mfb522 is much better than a Rd8 from Behringer
The RD-8 is actually pretty good, it got some serious sound sculping capabilites, the RD-9 on the other hand, not that good 😂
amazing work, and thank you for documenting it! i'm intending on performing surgery in my own unit and i had a couple of questions: when you describe the voices intermodulation you mention a "x4 a/b switch", is this a way to refer to a 4PDT switch? also, do you think i could get away with 1/8 watt metal resistors or i would be pressing my luck with current?
This is absolutely incredible! You nailed the spirit and the sound, subbed!
Hello there! Somehow in all examples of the B1 i hear i am missing something that i cant describe. It does not sound „rubbery“ enough and i feel like when one uses its distortion it goes from round to aggressive sounding in a too rapid fashion and not slowly and progressively. However since i dont own one i have bnot heard one in real life. Do you find the B1 to be a faithful 303 sound? Tbh i liked my Bassbot Mk2 a lot but sold it last year. If you had to choose between three devices, which one would take for a 303 sound: Roland Aira T-8 (missing a bit wild resonance) , B1 or Bassbot Mk2?
Puh, been a while since i had the donner. Currently using a tt303mk2 and abl software is all :)
@@maffezsynthmods ah ok. I thought I saw it on your site but am not 100% sure, so I thought you had made an informed opinion. Tt303mk2 also cool. Only the filter I found a bit too „perfect-tamed-civilized“
@@saardean4481 yeah, tt is not thewildest of the bunch but can be modded/tweaked easily, and has some cool real sequencer tricks up its sleeve imo. But good to have different options :)
@@maffezsynthmods I loved my Bassbot mk2 but sold it last year. Bad decision… Hmm modding. So you mean it could be modded to not sound so harsh when pushed into distortion? Can it be made to sound more like tt303mk2? I feel like this device either sounds like a good 303 imitator but the distortion at times sounds like the older digital distortion plugins somehow. It falls apart when pushed. Also would love it to have a Sub Osc..

The Prophet 5 is mono though and the Muse is stereo with stereo filters, so it's probably not a really fair comparison. To me the Moog is slightly more rounded, the prophet is a bit shaper which is hard to describe it sharp but different envelope shapes make a difference. I have a prophet. Which do you prefer? Are you glad to have both? The Muse is a lot more programmable so does it replace the prophet?
I prefer Take 5 to both.
prophet sounds so much better.
How can you tell which is which?
@@htechdance left moog muse, right sequential prophet 5
I thought it might, but at first blush, I’m preferring the Muse … 🤔
It's such a difficult way to compare. I prefer one stereo sound after another or if you do panning - 1 side at a time. From what I can hear nothing much in it though.
Yep, inknow. Hebce the link to a proper wav file that you can split as you like :)
@@maffezsynthmodsWhy not do a proper even comparison to start especially since you’re uploading it to UA-cam? We want to hear an even comparison without the extra legwork of downloading files etc. Thanks for your vid
@@Mercy_Pants sorry if im not living up to your consumer standards. I usually do modding demos, not comparisons, and this one here was not really meant seriously (what do you get out of such endeavours?) Given that this is entirely free for you, however, might also be an aspect to consider.
Here‘s the solution: only click here if you really want to know the answer. Or click if you dont want to know the answer and get it nevertheless :) on the left side you hear the Moog Muse and on the right side you hear the Moog Muse, just kidding, on the right side you hear the Seuqential P5, rev4 module.
Inthought this comment would turn into a folding thing.. you can see im a yt nincompoop… :)
I was correct. They sound close though. Muse is brighter, and thinner, but EQ could change that a bit.
@@BullyMaguire4everalso, even though this may sound generic, i often cut lows in poly lines, so that‘s that… :)
