    I made the mistake of spending 2 months in Seattle, ugh. My inflatable in a bag and PFD’s etc were covered with mold. I happened to have an open bin on the side and I had easily a gallon of water in it. It is built well on top so I have no rational for replacing it till it wears out. I just keep everything in waterproof bins and put my golf clubs in the cab, irritating for sure. Good to know there is no point in trying to fix it.

    I too have this top and it leaks..not a ton of water, but certainly enough to ruin things if you don't plan for it. Mine was on the truck when I bought it, but had wet camping gear the first time we used it since it rained during the drive. I was not a happy camper (pun intended) when we arrived at the campground.

    great video and it demonstrates my experience as well...this thing leaks live a sieve. I have one my my F350 and I am looking to replace it as soon as I can with one that really works and will keep things in the bed dry. Anyone got a good recommendation!

    Thank you for this video. When we bought the retrax cover for our 2016 F150, the installer mentioned that it might not be watertight. It was an understatement to say the least. What is weird is that it leaks from the center not from the rails. It also leaks at the rear because the Ford F-150 tailgate is flat at the top and if you have the retractable step the seal doesn't quite work. Funny thing, we bought a cheaper roll up cover for 1995 F150 and it never leaked. It wore out eventually and we had to replace it, but it cost one quarter of the retrax cover. The only real solution I have found is to put a tarp over everything in the back of the truck, but that's just diverts the water to the sides. Retrax offered a free carpet with the purchase of the cover. Fortunately the carpet seems to be mildew-proof as it does soak up water regularly. We camp for six months in the summer with our RV behind this truck. Every sunny day I take everything out of the truck to dry it out. It gets kind of tedious.

    Update. I posted this a while back and someone asked for an update with my new Retrax. The new Retrax cover leaks exactly like the first one. I was able to get maybe a year of use with minimal leakage through the slats but now it is just as bad as my old one if not worse. I’m not going to change it out again and not sure what I will do with my next cover purchase. I do like the Retrax design. Mainly because you can open the tailgate without opening the top. It also is very sturdy more so than my roll and lock

    I have one of these too with aluminum slats. I am not sure what material they selected for the flexible connector piece between the slats, but its probably plastic or TPE. They can shrink over the years where the aluminum will not, creating a potential for water ingress. This can be due to UV or simply material creep. Might explain why many of us owners get one good wet season out of them before they start leaking. I’m not sure there is a good solution to this problem, but the polycarb slats sounds like they have shown potential. The science backs up that idea, but it’s probably expensive. Glad to hear they replaced it for you. Curious for an update.

    Thanks for the video. My family and I went camping and used my F-150 to carry all of our gear. Little did we know that the ReTrax Pro was going to leak all over everything in the bed. It’s beyond frustrating thinking you’ve installed this piece of equipment that is meant to make your life easier and it actually makes it harder! I hope you got some resolution.

  • @rpmestayer

    Roll and lock did not leak in the center like the retrax, but the roll n lock did have leaking issues along the rail when the rail started to sag, which they did often. Overall the retrax leaks more, but less rail sagging with the retrax.

    Thanks for sharing this. Sorry to here your having leaking issues with this cover and the manufacture isn’t standing behind their product. I just purchased a new truck and have been checking out the RetraxPRO pro cover. In fact was very close to purchasing one right before I saw this. After seeing this I have changed my mind completely. Keeping cargo dry is one of the main reasons for Installing one of these covers. That and keeping stuff from walking away when nobody is watching. I guess I will see how the Pace Edwards Ultragroove Metal Tonneau Cover works. It’s pretty much the same as the RetraxPRO XR. Hoping it is a dry option.

    • @RobertPlattBell
      @RobertPlattBell 3 роки тому

      We had a pace Edwards cover on our 1995 F150. It works very well and never leaked. However the only mistake I made was putting armor-all on it. The armor all this off the adhesive and attach the vinyl to the cover. After a decade it started delaminating. But I bought another one just like it because they were so inexpensive. With the second one, I vowed never to put so much armor all on it and it had lasted a decade or so. I thought of buying a pace Edwards cover for a current truck, but decided to go with a retrax because it fit Yakima racks. It's an expensive cover and they make a banana more expensive model that is electrically operated. It's very sturdy and you can lock it tight, but it leaks like a sumbitch.

    Thanks for the video and your time as you just saved me from purchasing this cover. I wonder if the MX design leaks also? I might have to go with Undercover's top and it will never leak at least not one drop of water on my 2014 F150.

    Leakage has improved over the center of the truck through the panels with the new unit supplied to me by Retrax. I asked Retrax if these panels were supposed to leak and they said no, that mime was defective. They sent me a new panel system and really so far the panels are not leaking, but still plenty leaking along both rails even with the rails tilted at 15 degrees as recommended. I like the Retrax system better than the rollnlock which I owned prior to this one, but I would look into some of their other panels as this panel has a limited life, maybe 2 years before the rubber components start to leak.

    Regrettably, I purchased one of these same RetraxPro MX's a couple of weeks ago for a Ford Super Duty F350, thinking it would prove to be one of the better options on the market, and boy, was I wrong! I agree with others here who have stated that at this high price-point, its ridiculous that you're having this problem, and its hard to figure why, because they've made the clearance or seal at the left and right side weatherstripping so incredibly tight on mine that I can barely open or close it without forcing some of the weatherstripping out of its channel in the tracks, rearward toward the tailgate, each time. Its absurd!! In other words, the top (left and right) weatherstripping seal is so tight that I can't imagine that being the source of your leak(s). Anyway, its winter here right now, but I can tell you this . . . if this bastard ends-up leaking, Retrax is going to EAT this damned thing or they're going to receive a summons! No joke!

    Same issue with me. Leaking in the middle. For $1800 you would think these would be waterproof. My warrantied cover does the same thing. Should of gotten the cheaper plastic retrax that doesnt have the slats that leak in it. So pist about this. I keep my police gear inside and everything gets soaked

    After contacting Retrax I was told this top has a lifetime warranty and that the panels are defective on this cover so they would send me a replacement. I just put the new cover on a few days ago and after one rain there was no leaking in the center, but still along the rails. We shall see. I asked if the top was defective or if it was just a poor design that was not waterproof. I told them that I need a waterproof cover and maybe this is not the right cover for me. They told me once again that the top should not leak between those panels and the panels were defective if it was leaking through them. I agree with you that it is probably a faulty design and will eventually leak again.

      R Mestayer I contacted Retrax about this issue. They sent me an email on how to solve this which it did! Take out all 4 clamps. Have someone tilt the rails as you tighten the clamps. When you tilt the rails it should be about 2 degrees. After tighten the white screws and that should fix the issue completely. Hope this helps bud.

    • @rpmestayer
      @rpmestayer 7 років тому

      Kevin Tran Kevin, my cover was professionally installed and the dealer install the rails correctly with the 2° tilt in the rail originally. I double checked that again after the second installation and the rails are tilted. I even mentioned it to the dealer and he said they all always install with the two degree tilt. Anyway that has not seemed to work and my rails still leak.

    Hi Ross. Tried to see if I could PM u, but couldn't find an option. I too have that same Retrax on my new F150 and unfortunately have similar leaking issues. I had a Retrax on my previous F150 which never leaked (in the 11 yrs i owned it). I think it may have something to do with those slats. My last cover was the ReTrax One Polycarb. Those slats are all actually bonded together in a sheet where as the Pro is individual slats. Since each slat is separate, they have the tiny gasket between each slat. I wish I would have gone with the Polycarb top again since there is no way it can leak from the slats at all.
