How My Small (1000 subs) YouTube Channel Changed My Life
In October 2021, I plucked up the courage to pick up the camera, record myself training for an upcoming ultramarathon and hit "create video" on UA-cam. Since that day, my growth has been fairly slow and steady, but I have gained so much along the way.
If you are thinking about starting a UA-cam channel to capture your hobby or simply life experiences then my message to you is simple: just try. I never imagined reaching over 1000 subscribers or being monetized. But the biggest impact for me has been the community I've connected with and the confidence it has given me. It has also kept my passion for running and fitness alive.
It's certainly not an easy journey, and it will never be a journey that is "finished", but that's life really isn't it? And so it goes on...

    Is this a flat course? I'm considering running the marathon distance as well, for the first time.

    • @IRunDaily
      @IRunDaily 17 годин тому

      Yeah, pretty much. About 288m of elevation (just checked Strava). It's just a bit exposed, so if it's windy (like that day) you do feel it, but you can always find a group to hang onto! It's a good race though - I'll be doing it again in December.

    Do they have support though? I have the bamboo rayon version and if you run in those things sort of flop around which can be uncomfortable.

    • @IRunDaily
      @IRunDaily День тому

      Simple answer, no. They separate things out which makes it more comfortable and reduces chaffing. I mostly wear them with a running short that has an underpant lining and I've not had any issues during runs.

    • @heathen6669
      @heathen6669 День тому

      @IRunDaily Okay, thanks for the reply. Makes sense. Might be best to wear them with an additional compression underwear/ shorts when you run as you said. The bamboo rayon are so comfortable but I'm a little leery of them showing too much if I'm in public. Wish they sold some that had a single pouch for when I want to be more modest.

    Thank you for sharing. I had a UA-cam video a couple of years ago. Stopped, even took everything online, but recently I restarted again. This time - like you - focussing on running and sharing what I learn on my journey to ultras. But if I'm truly honest; I make the videos mostly for me. Just like you said; as a memory for later. I restarted, because I regretted taking the old videos offline. I like to look back at the adventures we had. Often the videos fill gaps in my memories, or they sparkle a conversation between me and my wife. Yes, I do have all the old stuff; somewhere on a hard drive. But having a UA-cam channel makes it so easy to look back at the things you've done. The races, the training, but also how we grow as a filmmaker and as a person. 🙏❤🔥

    Hi Ian, I like what you said about creating a time capsule to look back on later in your life. I only started in Aug-23 and I’d deliberated for a while until I just remembered some advice I’d seen. “Make a start”. And I did, and it is hard, but it’s opened up so many new avenues and I’m really enjoying the journey✅

    • @IRunDaily
      @IRunDaily 6 днів тому

      Just keep that in mind when it all feels a bit hopeless... Which it invariably does! The time capsule part is so nice now, I regularly just scroll through old videos of my training - it's lovely 🙂

    It's been a lovely journey for us since joining UA-cam. So many wonderful people we connect with. As I've probably said before, I take the old Lord Reith maxim of `Educate, Inform, Entertain' and try to put in all three elements into our videos. That would be my advice to anyone setting out or looking to develop. You can't just point a camera at your face and start talking. In the same way teaching isn't about standing in front of children and talking about a subject.

    • @IRunDaily
      @IRunDaily 6 днів тому

      I do feel like there is a little cluster of us that seemed to begin their journey at around the same time and have grown together; it's really nice. That's a great maxim - I shall remember that. I also try and think of myself as a "guide" not a "guru". I'm on the journey with you and we'll make progress together. Thanks for all the support and input over the past few years; it has helped me a great deal in my training and racing.

    Thanks, I want to start a UA-cam channel as I've started my running journey, and it's looking very exciting. Six weeks of training for a marathon-unexpectedly, I was in sub-3 shape. (Unfortunately, I had to pull out on the day because of injury.) One year and three months later, I have yet to do a marathon as I’ve been busy with life (doing a PhD) , but I should have one coming up this year. Yesterday, I surprised myself massively with 20 miles at 6:35 min/mile pace. In August, I ran an ultra-marathon-two marathons back-to-back-at 3:10 pace. And this is just the beginning! I feel like my journey will definitely be worth following over the next few years. That said, I’m not looking forward to making the first few videos-it’s just about getting over that hurdle. :(

      You're welcome - glad it was a help. I used some old Altra trail shoes, with quite aggressive lugs on them. The inov8s would be a good option. There is a fair bit of mud, but it's also useful to help you get up the walls etc. I'd also recommend some cheap cycling gloves to give your hands some protection. With a warmup and cooldown that means I'm taking 45 minutes to myself every day, which everyone should be doing! When it gets cold is the biggest challenge being based in Canada.

      Yeah, conditions certainly do make it tough! The treadmill can be your friend if you need to safely get the mileage in. I did 30 minutes a day for 30; days and noticed a massive improvement!

    I've been running every day for probably more than a year but I only started counting on NYD last year, so I'm approaching a year of a streak. I've taken my 5k PB from 19:40 to 16:50.

    I ran for 3 years as a teen and my Mike time went from 8:14 a mile to 5:07 when I finished my running. Came back almost 45 years later and after 6 month ran a 6:10 which puts in top 300 for my age bracket. I am much better miler now then when I was i sophomore in high school

    I echo all of what you’ve said. I’ve run 45km per week for 2 years. Three short commute runs (5km), parkrun and speed session on Saturday (10km) and 90minute long run on Sunday. I’ve gone from 26:30 to 19:40 5k 55min to 41min 10k Half marathon 1:33 And lost 12kg! Keep at it. We share the same philosophy.

      That's inspirational progress mate - well done! 45-50k is definitely the sweet spot for me. Supplement a bit of cross training and you're good for most things I think!

    Really interesting one here. I’ve thought about this before but worried about injuries , never thought of it as actual prevention. Also, the never far away from it line really got me pondering. Thanks pal. Something to think about. Solid video as usual

      Yeah, try and keep the baseline high enough and it's a lot easier to get back on track!

    This is class mate. I loved the previous videos you did on this. I think this one is the most insightful. Well done. For anybody who doesn't follow this journey, one day Ian ran on a boat. BOOM!

    It was interesting to see how you manage to fit it all in mate. I agree with all your thoughts about consistency etc. it helps keep those PBs within reach and all you need to do is add a bit of specific race training in to tune up your base. Long may the streak continue. 😎🤘

    Fitness, focus and friendships. Nice summary, I’d probably agree. One rule I try to apply is, when you don’t feel like going out for a run, ride, swim, whatever - that’s when you must - because you know you’ll thank yourself later. I don’t run every day but I exercise every day. Just returned from a 20 K mtb ride, procrastinated for an hour, but then went✅

    I never understand why a anyone would make a rear pocket but not have it large enough to carry a phone. It's a feature I look for. Running solo off the beaten track, having a livetrack running is a bit of reassurance. Great kit list! Tempted with the windproof top.

    • @IRunDaily
      @IRunDaily 28 днів тому

      Yeah, I know, and we're literally talking a few centimeters either side. Even a kangaroo pouch like the ones you get on trail shorts would be an easy addition. The windproof has been brilliant - very versatile and perfect for most conditions.
