Mic Shootout - Slate ML1/Neumann TLM49/AKG C414XLS/Aston Origin
Переглядів 4,8 тис.2 роки тому
In this microphone shootout we compare 4 large diaphragm condenser microphones from € 198 to € 1.500. As one of our contestants is the Slate ML1 which can emulate other much more expensive microphones, we decided to spice up this comparison by adding 2 microphone modelling plug ins: Antares Mic Mod and IK Multimedia Mic Room. How does the AKG C414 XLS emulating a Sony C800G sound compared to th...

This video kind of happened while toying around with Softube's Model 84 software synthesizer and having lots of fun with it. All synthesizer sounds where performed on the Model 84 (9 instances) while all drum tracks where created using Logic Pro X stock sounds (the Analog Circuits kit). Only Logic Pro X's stock reverbs, EQs and dynamics were used for mixing. composersforfilm.at mr...
Spitfire Audio BBC Symphony Orchestra Core vs. VSL SYNCHRON-ized SE Vol. 1 - A first look

Title should be "why you should buy the Neumann TLM49"...
The TLM49 can sound fantastic on many sources especially vocals. But in our opinion it is not as universal as the C414XLS or the OC16. The C414XLS especially doesn't have its own distinctive sound and therefore can be shaped with an EQ very well. I think there's a good reason why C414s can be found in front of guitar amps, as overheads on drums, as close mics for orchestral recordings as well as mics in front of singers - they simply work on anything.
@@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 Sure but her voice sounded amazing on the 49!
@@aesoundforge You‘re right. This song needed a mic that sounds like a tube mic. We tested several of our mics before we recorded this song and the other one we liked was our Audio Technica AT 4060 (a real tube mic).
What an incredible voice she has!
Thank you. You can hear more of Elisabeth's work as a singer als well as a solo artist in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLWSi_H7o5y-RRvfFP_sh-q8yJUeIxfXF7.html
The Neumann smashed all of them on her voice, hands down...
Disclaimer: There is a little more processing going on on the TLM 49 than on the other mics - as this is the final mix of the song. We tried to use as little processing as possible on the OC16 as well as on the two 414s in order to feature their sound and not the plug-ins involved.
The 414 mkii sounded best on the vocals for sure
This video has really helped me conclude that the OC16 sounds stunningly good in comparison. And at a much lower price. Thank you - I enjoy your videos greatly - love your voice 🤗
Thank you!
I thought the XLS sounded a bit more gentle but then in the mix the XLII sounded much more open 😮
to our ears, the OC16 was between the XLS and XLII, more towards the XLS. Thought the XLII sounded a bit bright and forward, but when placed in the mix (for vocals) it seemed to sit better. We're looking at the OC16 for acoustic guitar, have used a 414XLS on resonator and absolutely loved it, but our budget won't allow that option-OC16 looks like it will work nicely!
@@bearandrobert I also think, that the OC16 sits between the two C414s when it comes to it‘s sound. We use it a lot on acoustic guitar because it needs less eq-tweaking than a recording done with the XLS. The XLS sounds extremely neutral, some may say boring, but it takes eq extremely well. The OC16 on the other hand delivers a more finished sound on many sources due to it’s presence boost. So in the end it may need less work during mixing.
can you please show me how we connect a akg 214c to our computer for vocals please 🙏🙏
You'll need an audio interface with a built-in microphone preamp. A cost effective solution would be a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, Universal Audio's Volt 2 or SSL's 2.
Super nice voice and great delivery Elisabeth I really enjoyed listening to it. When it comes to the testing you guys had an interesting concept with interesting results. I recently bought a Slate ML-1 and I'm satisfied with it's performance atleast on vocals haven't gotten around to use it on acustic guitar yet, my guitarist recently bought a really nice Taylor so in time this will of course happen. I've looked at several youtube videos about the ML-1 and of course loads of other mic's and I've come to the conclusion that the youtube compression algorithm render a real comparision of any material close to useless. I still enjoy these kind of videos though if for nothing else the thoughts and reasoning of people who loves music as much as I do. Great Video nonetheless.
considering the price the austrian audio is just always the winner
Alright but the TLM49 wins for me hands down.
Disclaimer: There is a little more processing going on on the TLM 49 than on the other mics - as this is the final mix of the song. We tried to use as little processing as possible on the OC16 as well as on the two 414s in order to feature their sound and not the plug-ins involved. During our tests we noticed that our three contestants really sound related and to show how familiar the are sound wise we decided to include the totally different sounding TLM49 we already had recorded at the time. If you want to hear the TLM49 and the C414 XLS the exact same way you can take a look at this video of ours: ua-cam.com/video/rq6Iz1KKIxU/v-deo.htmlsi=1rcmr0qgE80JYXcC
For me the OC16 has the best combination of showing presense and still not being as coloring as I would say the XLII are. I actually found the music a bit louder in the finished song using the Neumann so that makes the comparison between that one and the previous ones a bit harder. Overall a nice comparison.
Thanks for you comment. I think the XLII isn't a bad microphone (in fact we were surprised how much we liked it) but in many cases it may have a sound that's too coloured. On overheads for example it could be very hard the tame the cymbals. We still have the XLII here in our studio but we don't use it, as the XLS takes EQ better nd the OC16 already has a nice presence boost and therefore often only needs a little bit of subtractive EQ depending on the source.
@@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 Just to clarify, I'm not calling the XLII a bad microphone in any way. We are in total agreement on the analysis. 🙂

AMAZING CONTENT AND VOICE! I did not expect to love the 0C16. It had this sweetness about it. Looking forward to checking it out myself.
Thanks!
Finally a good comparison video. Both libraries are excellent. And maybe the most realistic ones out there at the moment. For me Spitfire sound more airy, humanly played, comparing to the VSl which is more dry, however VSL is famous for the dry sound that it offers. So having that said, whichever one chooses, can't go wrong.
Your ears are broken.
TLM 49 the most dreamy, hands down. The c414 seems a little more honest ... and is more versatile in general. I like that you put in the c414, since it often is described as non-ideal for female vocals. Oh and btw: your singing is absolutely magical! Thx.
Thanks for your comment! The 414B-XLS is indeed a very honest microphone. It takes EQ incredibly well. We didn't apply any EQ in our examples but the 414B-XLS can sound fantastic on vocals just with a little boost in the highs from a pultec-style EQ. In an upcoming video we will take a look at the two different 414s (XLS and XLII) currently available as well as the Austrian Audio OC16.
What preamp used for tlm 49
@@AditMMofficial We used the internal preamps of our RME Fireface UFX on all microphones.
You know things get serious when you put a paper towel on your face.
Why do all these tests have terrible singers and terrible songs as a demonstration? You cant tell anything about the mic at all......
The slate ml1 is a joke, also, warm audio makes the wa-67 and that one sounds amazing . This mod is kind of expensive but it does produce "that" sound . I must say, the singer has better taste than you :)))
The warm doesn't sound anything like a u67 and uses cheap components, fails very easily.
@@mirkomarkovic3438 Maybe your brain failed
I love both mic. For the price the slate m1 is so good.
true it doesn't sound pleasing at all .....beyerdynamic mc740 is way better than this
Nice test! Did you guys try out a few takes with the hpf switch activated (top end boost)? The latest MK67 have this mod to match the modern production U67. Cheers!
To be honest we had no idea that there maybe was a HPF-switch. Do you have a TLM67 with this mod? If so, how do you like it?
@@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 I've had mine for a few months. On the stock setting, I have the same feelings as you about the mic, kind of dull. So I leave the HPF on at all times. I've also just changed out the super cheap mic cable to a Gotham GAC-7 and it suprisingly evened out the midrange perfectly. I'm still putting it through it's paces but overall, i'm really loving it. It's a rich sounding mic. Next up is trying out a few different EF86's for it. Best of luck.
Mazal Tov on these gorgeous and haunting vocals and composition. Even my 16 yr old daughter was drawn in and curious. May I ask what mics and technique were used to record the piano? The piano sound is exquisite as well! Bravo
Thank you for you kind words! The piano sound in this shootout is the combination of two Kontakt-Libraries from Native Instruments. It's the "Grandeur" combined with the "Una Corda". The "Una Corda" adds some mechanical noise and overtones to the very clean sounding "Grandeur".
Amazing voice!
Thank you!
What monitors are being used?
What a great voice!
Thank you!
I think I ahould record with all mics in the future and then choose my favorite i stead of just deciding which mics to use.
This was fun. Having done my own shootout video like this, I found Mic Mod EFX and IK Mic Room were fantastic options if you have a decent source mic.
Excellent mind blowing cool review. You both are excellent teachers. I am subscribing your channel.
loved this. More please. So honest and fun and exciting. Thank you. I am a c414 XLS fan as well
Thank you! We have already other videos in the pipeline ....
I think overall my favorite was the 414xls. Very pure, intimate, & natural. That TLM49 is extremely seductive while being fairly natural. I would’ve liked a Shure KSM44 or 37 thrown in the mix along with maybe a TLM170 or 193.
BBC hands down.
I think the 414 was the best because it entered all the same finals
Is it possible that this has been written with bbc so and than edited to be played on VSL?
You are partially right. It has been written with the BBC SO to test it, after we got it. When I tried to modify it in a way so that it works with the VSL Synchronized Special Edition however I quickly realised that I would be necessary to record some parts again, to get the dynamics right. So it isn't just edited.
Thank you for the clarification! I also read your caption only now😓 I always find quite funky to just copy a region from one library to another. For example I’m noticing that vsl has dynamics controllable with cc even in shorts. As you mentioned it’s very important to re-record the dynamics and other parameters. The vsl player has less articulations but more parameters available to to automate compare to core. Matter of fact I haven’t yet decided where to spend my money this Black Friday! 😂 You had both for a while , what is your personal experience? Thank you for your time:)
@@simonemicieli9024 I think in this example the BBC SO works better, but I like both. We have the VSL SE Vol 1. und Vol 2. and often use their solo instruments - especially wind instruments. For ensemble strings or brass on the other hand we tend to use the BBC SO because it offers more dynamic layers compared to the "smaller" VSL Editions. Best regards, Florian
Gut gemacht.Danke für ihren video!!
beautiful Voice…
The slate Mic is only featured first 1 time. The AKG is featured first 4 times. (Referring to First Test) The beginning of the Vocal is mellow, and not exciting the reverb or compression etc. as much as latter in the track.. SOOO, the first Mic always leaves off a better impression - louder is better ect! A better test would be a short sample 4 words of the vocal looped with strong continents and S's Test 2: 2 measures of overhead drum cymbals, hard splashing, and A/ B /A/B every Mic against each other, ... 😂
I'll plump for BBCSO Core, but that's only because I have it myself (I don't have the VSL library, and as far as I know this is the first time I've heard it). I know one thing, though. BBCSO Core to me is a marvellous tool. It has given me my own private orchestra. For hobbyist composers like myself, that was unheard of until comparatively recently. Thanks for making and posting this comparison.
I have both products, both very different that I would not use to compose every style. I'll summarize it easily: If I want a big and rich sound I will always use BBC, on the other hand if I want a soft, clear and almost perfect sound (not very human) I would use Vienna.
I prefer spitfire bbc core. Definitely on my future purchases list 😁. Anyway nice programming in both.
VSL has this weird phaser like effect on it, while BBC SO sounds ultra clear. Also the crash in VSL sounds quite harsh.
On this example I would say that BBCSO Core sounds better (more live) than very clean (sterile) VSL libraries. But it seems that in this example at least Horns are not EQed properly to be comparable to BBCSO Horns a4. Therefore both libraries are not comparable. Each piece should be mastered and then compared.
What midi controller is that? BBC for me on this one.
It's a Alesis V49.
Merci. Genau was ich gesucht habe
Super. Es freut uns wirklich, wenn unser Video bei der Mikrofonwahl hilft.
Excellent video.
Thank you!
Do you have a favourite microphone or microphone emulation in this video?
@@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 While i listened to the video on an "inappropriate" home speaker, i found the TLM 49 to be smoother. About the ML1. I have one, which I'm trying tl sell. The first unit i had suddenly started producing a ocean-like humble noise, making it unusable. The second unit sounded fine, but there were moments where the noise would "come up" and disappear. I found it unreliable. In comparison to a TLM 103 and an AT4040, i found it to be very sibilant for my voice, even more than the TLM 103 Keep up the good work!
I‘ve heard from colleagues that there can be quality issues with Slate gear. However we are very happy with our ML1 - it works like a charm. I really like how it can sound with some of the emulations. The „pure“ sound of this mic on the other hand isn‘t something to write home about ;-).
That Intel Imac seems to handle itself pretty good
It’s still a decent machine and can handle quite complex logic sessions. However these 2 logic sessions are not very cpu intense.
