I remember watching a "This Week in the NFL" back in '74 or '75. Namath and the Jets were playing the Bills at Rich Stadium. Typical windy Buffalo game. Namath stepped back to throw a pass down the middle (crossing pattern) and the ball just sailed on him. LOTS of zip, but the ball just took off, a horrible overthrow and pick. by 1974, Namath's knees were SO ravaged that a) he could not push off his right leg with any degree of strength, and b) by that time he could not stomp into his throws with his left leg. You can have a gun, but if you do not know how to use your legs to get a throw off, you are done. Worse, if you have knee issues - especially on both knees! - you'd be hard-pressed to win a flag football game, let alone play successful QB in the NFL. A few examples such as Bill Nelson, Steve Bartkowski, Ken Stabler and, more recently, Teddy Bridgewater were QBs whose careers were severely curtailed/affected prematurely due to severe knee injuries. As Howard Cosell so eloquently stated: "The knee. It's always the knee."

My father took me to my first NFL game a year earlier when I was seven years old. It happened to be Joe Namath's last game as a NY Jet. Pictures I have from the game are my only memories. We sat third row in end zone seats. It was a miserable cold day with the Jets losing 42-3. Sitting directly behind us was a woman who turned out to be Namath's girlfriend at the time. I, being an irresistible cute young boy caught her attention and she invited us to join her in the locker room after the game to meet Joe. I do remember for some reason the fans rushing onto the field after the game was over. I don't remember anything after that but I do have a black & white photo of me standing next to Namath, seated in front of his locker while taking off his knee braces. According to my father Joe really looked beat up and wasn't really interested in entertaining any guests. And that was it. If I didn't have the picture I never would believe it happened.

That 49er vs Ram game in 1995, the Rams were coming in at 5-1 against the 49ers and the Rams got stomped out. That loss was so devastating that they rarely won and sucked for another 4 years until Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk came to the team.
