Stoicism: The Original Self Help? With Jules Evans (part3)
Переглядів 1,3 тис.13 років тому
Stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy that grew up in Athens in 300BC, would seem to be light years away from modern self-help. The Stoics fasted, slept on floors, avoided hot baths, shunned cook books, attempted to extirpate all passions, and embraced suicide as a legitimate response to the 'slings and arrows of outrageous fortune'. Hardly a philosophy for today's touchy-feely society. And ye...

    To know we are loved so much by God is hard to humanly understand.,Jesus capacity to forgive us is still partly a mystery to me, the more I understand this the more I can forgive, love myself and others, its still hard some days to go to Him. Charlie is probably one of the best Christians at explaining the deep mystery I know. I really love RT kendall, Lance Lambert and Ron Dunn too. Charlie's Film the Boy horse fox & mole felt like Jesus was speaking to us all personally, it was quite heartbreaking ❤

    Not all of us put out some thing we are not . If you have opinions and are strong minded about who and what you are and know ,you are not lying to yourself ,which most do and not lying to others . One thing for certain all genuine authentic people are despised and hated. The death of Christ and the way he died tells you the truth an authentic person with no cover no false hood is not wanted in any land ,faith has nothing to do with it

    I pray since you taped this interview that you have learned the freedom of just praying about stuff and letting it rip...say what you want to say and follow your heart....sometimes you may wind up totally alone but God will still be there. Don't worry about being perfect, or making people happy, say whatever it is that you feel. If you mess up then nobody is perfect, and if someone tries to shame you then just tell them whatever you did seemed like a good idea at the time, or just don't explain anything. God knows your heart and He loves you no matter what. You just got to get up and do your best everyday, forgive others, and hope for the best. Say and do what you feel is right and stand by your conviction even if you tick off the entire rest of the world. Living isn't living if you don't follow your heart. Everyone just trying to make everyone else happy and worrying about what everyone else thinks will never be truly happy because they are not living a life they love. They are living a life other people love. Let it rip and don't even worry about the outcome because no matter what, you are going to be ok. God created all of us to be our own person, and He knows what he is doing. If your heart is in the right place then everything works out. Just be you. Not everyone will love the you that is you but who really gives a flying flip if they don't. May God bless and Keep you Charlie.

    WOW so good. Everything Charlie Mackesy says is literally how I view life as well...0:21 even the parts about being known for truly loving. It got to the point where I started my own blog called famous4love.com/... His view of faith is the same as mine...He's so genuine. Thank you for capturing this interview. Makes me feel less alone knowing other people feel/live as I do.

    I believe in the whole of the human kingdom, all subscribe to a basic level of ethics, morals and values. There are minor differences, but a couple of basic ones are, Do not steal what is not yours, and Do not kill indiscriminately. The title under the video "How to choose the right ethics" speaks volumes. Ethics are "Extant". There is no right or wrong to ethics, and it is egotistical to put that out as a choice. Morals on the other hand are a different story, and no, they are not the same.

    Truly interesting Video! I was always a failure in my life and did not know the reason! My friend gave me this "7 habits of ..." book by Covey. I read it many times and understood that Habits are very important in life. I took it seriously, so i started using "sevenhabits" mobile app by lokesh which was a tool to practice the 7 habits and it has helped me a lot! Now, I am more confident and have more energy and more focus!

    citing Steve Jobs is a truly poor example to set in this introduction - to most people it will be truly misleading - I can't think of a less stoic person than Steve. He may well have contemplated his mortality - it probably started when he realised how ill he was. Unfortunately regardless of his contemplation he made some really awful life decisions. He created a business based on brain washing consumers and enslaving less fortunate people for a minority to profit. His driving forces were to hoard money and create a name for himself that he hoped would live on after he died. He sold people on spin and the misinformation that buying 'i' products would lead to their happiness and nothing he did was driven by goodness. Maybe leave him out of the talk next time. Other than that I found this a useful basic précis of the ideas of Stoic philosophy. Thank you.

    Thanks for the thoughts, I agree completely with your last sentence. Stoicism is a very applicable philosophy, personally I use elements of it daily. Highly recommend Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" or perhaps Seneca's "Letters to a Stoic" if you are just getting into stoicism.

  • @boleroinferno
    @boleroinferno 12 років тому

    I would have liked to see the questions section as well, but it was a very interesting lecture! Being that I am a student of philosophy who has never studied the stoicism in depth, I am quite surprised to find that I've used all the Stoic techniques you mentioned in this video. I really think everyone's life can be improved with access to an education in philosophy.

    Professor Warburton said that some alternatives are objectively better than others, but that individual people can make mistakes about them -- so indviduals should be left free to experiment in their lives. JS Mill said the same thing. The problem with this is that it contradicts utilitarianism -- an ethic which takes stock of the life of every sapient (or every sentient!) being. You cannot say that individuals are morally primary, but then collectively add them into a moral equation.
