My name is Kaluven, I am British, and I love strategy games. I don't have facebook, twitter or instagram so I won't beg for you to follow that pile of cobblers.
An RTS like no other - Original War
Persistent Soldiers, Alien Technology and the mother of all time-heists. Yes it's time for Original War, the RTS from 2001 that's quite unlike any other. As far as strategy games go it's fondly remembered and pretty distinct, but what is it, how does it work and why are ape men wearing bomb vests?

The original Frostpunk was released in 2018, an event I totally missed and as such I didn't get the game until a couple of weeks ago. Now that I've played it, and it's currently on sale at a heavily reduced price, I would thoroughly recommend it for anyone looking for something to keep themselves occupied with over the Christmas holidays. Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War was the third title by Stainless Steel Studios - the creators of Empire Earth. 1000 Subscriber Special - It's a Strategy Channel Celebration
Its a shame the devs decided to abandon the COOP development because i think that along with like a roguelite mode(and i hope the new mode will be something like it ) could have worked great. On the plus side the modding scene for this game is great with people even recreating the previous ST RTS and media including custom units.
The third faction aren't "some Arabic nation" - they're explicitly mercenaries. German, American, French... but yeah, a lot of them are vaguely Arabic, and their bases go for a Dune-ish vibe. Also, the faction splits fairly early, with the main antagonists remaining the "Arabians", while the more multi-national rest is no longer so hostile.
Only thing that ever disappointed about the game, the 6 chapters per faction. Wished there was more before getting to the final mission. Still play this game, it's a classic that will never die.
This game is a great example of a RPG in a RTS skin.
Another media about how Americans invade another country to take away someone else's resources and it's very democratic. I wonder why no one likes them?
Could we get a 5 hour video of you just absolutely obliterating dumb reviewers? You called bro out for not reading the book at the exact instant I was thinking “he didn’t read the book” and I need more of this directly into my veins
You convinced me thx but imma play easymode because i suk
Thanks for covering this game! But when someone calls Czechia Eastern European, it always hurts a bit.
Sorry about that, I don't really know the proper definitions, but ignorance is always a bad excuse. I guess "Central European" is far more accurate.
16:13 absolutely the correct answer. I've been playing this game on and off for 20 years, and it still pops into my mind now and again, my "Roman Empire" as some people call it
Hope there is spiritual successor for rise of nations and rise of legend.
Your channel is so good. I was one of the first 1k subs, and I just can’t believe it hasn’t blown up yet. I’m confident that it will.
Thanks! That's very kind.
@ You deserve it! Have you considered doing a Steam RTS sale video? It’s probably a great way to get some attention for the channel + yours is undeniably at least an informed opinion. I was really bummed that Deathlock isn’t part of the sale though 😭
@ I probably should have thought of that a week ago. I tend to just find myself playing a game and then think "I could probably talk about this for 15 minutes". Maybe next sale :D
I remember buying this classic game back in the summer of 2001 and playing it religiously. Many happy memories. For New Year this year, I bought the game and have been playing it since. Great game, great game.
I wonder if this game got its freeform vehicle designing idea from 'Warzone 2100' which was 1st released in 1999, where it does have some premade designs but otherwise you have to design them by yourself. Granted, I dunno if that feature was there ever since the 1st release.
"Electronic Boutique". That's a name I haven't heard in a long time, a long time.
I remember playing this on hardest difficulty at night, sacrificing sleep. As I recall, it has very strong feedback loops, do well consistently early on and you end up loosing pretty much nobody, with everyone becoming elite in their respective fields. Most people struggling are probably leaning far to much/long in infantry and crewed vehicles. Soldiers were the most unimportant class in the game, peaking at one guy with missile launcher or crewing a defense turret, while a skilled mechanic could command or maintain an entire armoured formation. Also discourages dividing forces or rushing, supplies are either limited or finite, so buildup over time for everyone is limited. Do prepare everything and turtle, then go do your objectives.
One thing I found it really hard to understand is how much difference each skill level made in what area. As an example, the manual hints at the fact a good mechanic is a better driver than a bad mechanic - but it doesn't really explain in what areas those abilities manifest (damage, resistance, speed etc) nor does it give any clues on how big a gap there is between an average mechanic, a great mechanic and a control computer. I think these sorts of questions are one of the reasons I find the game so interesting. I get the feeling there is a huge level of depth and I only really just scratched the surface in my recent playthrough.
@kaluventhebritish I think I will get into a modded one myself, nice revisitation 20+y later. From what I remember, AI and Radio controlled ones had straight up lower stats than manually crewed vehicles. I think mechanics got Boni to them based on Skill (and could partially transfer them in case of remote driving), the soviet protagonist in his "Mascha" was a one man task force. Output differences in Shooting, repairing and research were very obvious though. Teleporting uncrewed tanks backed by mechanics in Long range/fire support/self protection vehicles were overpowered. They got damaged, teleported, Gorki quickly repaired them and off they went again.
@@kaluventhebritish It's all there in the tooltips, though - you see all the bonuses from skill, equipment etc. And no, you absolutely can divide your forces and rush, and soldiers are critical - they just usually aren't the "safe" way to do things. There's a lot of difference between the Americans and the Russians, too. Yes, you will want to prepare as many of your people as possible to be great mechanics _too_ , but that's a general theme in the game - specialisation is very powerful short-term, but can hurt you big long-term. In most maps, you can get great benefits from rushing properly. Most of the time, the computer competes for the same resources you do (one of the nice things about the resource system in the game); turtling makes the game much tougher and longer. It's all about adapting to the situation, and forcing the enemy to do what you want him to do. Lying in wait to ambush their top-tier mechanics? Absolutely. Passively waiting for them to come to you all the time while waiting to build up an overwhelming force? It works, but it certainly isn't the best way to play the game :P And even when you're turtling, it's critical to finish off their retreating/downed people - if you can't take their skilled personnel out of the game, you're hurting yourself. Soldiers hiding on hills or in forests are pretty good at just that. A gem of a game, and one of the few interesting RTS games that got released after everyone else started thinking the only way to make an RTS is to follow what Starcraft did. Unfortunately, as was the case with many "foreign" (i.e. not US) games, the marketing in the US was essentially non-existent and noöne knew about the game. Publishers, eh? Good riddance.
1st mission - Dies 20times - WTF IS THIS SHIT - uninstall - only to discover what a gem it is years later :D
There is a mission where you have to recruit six or so team members to go off on your own, and honestly that generated quite a few "WTF IS THIS SHIT" moments for me. On my 10th or so attempt I really started to question my life choices.
@@kaluventhebritish hello, i think that you can point out the Sands of Siberia mod, that adds like 50missions and nowdays, almost whole Arabian campaign
@@kaluventhebritish It's one of the rare RTS games where you're actually expected to _think_ :D You can always force yourself through a mission somehow, but generally, if you're having trouble, you should probably try a different approach. It can be punishing if you're trying to play it like Starcraft, where every unit is expected to survive for about 30 seconds :D
The Russian and American campaigns both also split into two separate endings with a few missions unique to both, whilst they also "share" an ending in one path, these shared missions are often somewhat different depending on which faction you play. It's a lot of content and I can see why they ran out of time. I recently purchased it on steam for almost nothing and replayed it - and I can see why I didn't complete the game when I was younger, and used a walkthrough when I finally did a few years later. Was fun to revisit!
One of the tricky things is losing people (or choosing the wrong ones for the mission at hand)... the other is that you generally really want to adapt to the mission and who you are fighting and why. There's actually elements of strategy (and operations) in this RTS game! :D It's also one of the early games where you can both change game speed and give out commands while paused - and it's pretty important.
I feel like I must have played the demo of this as a kid, it feels so familiar
Also a note on the third faction: the people who took over the OW maintenance also put together a complex campaign for them as well, based on the development notes left over in the data folder. It's pretty good but HARD.
Anecdotally, playing on the middle difficulty I only needed reset on 3 or 4 missions in total (the final mission for allies, 2 of the alliance missions and 1 mission in Soviet campaign). e.g. for the mentioned exploding apes (which were a very rude surprise), the base is set up to defend in the direction they come from, and since they can't take much punishment, stationing a good soldier in the bunker should deal with them. I believe they also get a call out from one of the characters when they appear. I think the game generally expects you to lose some manpower to rude surprises to avoid breaking the difficulty curve, because the way the bonuses from skills work, around level 8 the people become godly, and level 10 soldier with some easy levels in other skills (which improve his fighting as well because reasons) can tear through a whole bunch of level 3/4s.
Mechanically, this seems like a descendant of War Wind. Except playable.
Oh yeah, definitely not the first RTS experimenting with meaningful "people resources"... but they did it much better than War Wind. Mind, I love War Wind, but they really needed another one or two to polish the whole thing :D
I LOVE THIS GAME!! And i struggle to get fellow RTS enjoyers to play it with me!
dont worry its not so missable, when u play mp it always crashes when someone presses spacebar >_> and if not u get overwhelmed by mad polish players with bazuka or monkeys :D
Czech national treasure! 🇨🇿
It really is.
The story is so bonkers I am surprised there never was an early 2000s animated TV show and a late 2010s life action movie based on it, that by now has two sequels (preferably with Dwayne Johnson as leading actor).
BTW, the game's story is loosely based on the sci-fi novel The Last Day of Creation (1981) by Wolfgang Jeschke.
@@BohemianBard I did actually look up that novel before I wrote the script for the video, I was interested in how loosely based it was and if the ideas in the book were more or less crazy than the game. Unfortunately it's way out of print so the book would have cost me some 30 times more than the game did, plus the single review it had said the English translation was pretty bad. A shame. I was quite interested in having a read!
I was in the process of making a video on this hidden childhood gem as well ! The odds
I hope you do. I think I could watch 10 different videos on this game and still not fully understand it, even after playing a big bunch of the campaign last week.
I miss insane premise like tvis
I remember this game being punishingly difficult because of the persistent soldiers. It was easy to screw up early on and be doomed to failure from the outset, or have to keep save scumming because you lost someone important. But I was only 12 when it played the demo so perhaps that was the reason.
I never played this game but I love the premise.
One of my favorite from my childhood
Hey dude. Is there a command where you can select all construction vehicles? On screen? I tried dragging a circle around my units in the previous mission and I can only select the fighting units. Do you know the command to select all units in your immediate screen? Thanks!
I'm not 100% sure off the top of my head and I think it might vary with control options in the config. I generally use double click on a unit to select all of the ones of the same type on the screen. The BAR website is pretty good for this sort of stuff, see if this is of any help: www.beyondallreason.info/commands/select-all-units-of-same-kind-in-view
@@kaluventhebritish Dude, thanks for the tip on that infantry simulator mission. Trying world war xxv now.
@@kaluventhebritish Could not beat WWXXV. Holy crap that mission sucks.
"Communism Simulator 2 sheds its pretenses and builds a fantastic world where a centralised, state-run economy can produce commodities or sustain human life." - My Review (I executed a prisoner in the first game after the Storm. The discontent was below, but I wanted to connect my political to that of the storm through ritual.)
I like how in your review we get to pick either producing commodities or sustaining human life, but not both. I think there is something about plummeting temperatures and a lack of food that connects people to the true feeling of communism.
lol ee2 was dog shit taco compared to the first
1:14 haha cuck software (1996-1997)
Dude one by one sucks.
Not sure if you mean my strategy or the scenario itself but you're probably right either way 😉
@@kaluventhebritishyour strategy is good. Just hasn't worked for me. They seem to be rolling in tech 2 by the time I start going after them. Also, one of the orange AI commanders had some balls and walked into my base, smashing my units and bot lab.
I saw the negative reviews of FP2 from people who loved FP1 and it *resonated* with me. They were some very good points but they all boiled FP2 down to just another city builder but with some politics
I've yet to play Frostpunk 2, but the vibe I got from the first trailers was that the game would focus on military conflicts between cities over oil and resources like some kind of snowy version of Mad Max. Some kind of "fighting between cities" I felt was the one thing missing in the first game and the logical progression for what would happen after the winter settled. It seems like a missed opportunity and makes me wonder why the older trailers seemed to hint at it being the focus of Frostpunk 2 when there's nothing like that in the game. I suppose maybe it was over-marketing the "political infighting" mechanic to make it seem like actual wars were breaking out.
I had never seen those old trailers, but I just watched one and I I really don't think it represents the game very well. You're right about the lack of fighting between different settlements, you would imagine people being people that it would be pretty commonplace. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen mention of a crossbow let alone a gun in either game!
I mean frostpunk 2 aint a bad game but not great either like frostpunk 1 since frostpunk 2 sacraficed depth and full hands on involment of the first game. Theres till hope for the second game with expansion size DLCs that bring more frostpunk 1 style depth and involment back. Still after several long play troughs i like frostpunk 2 to.
I don't envy the job 11bit had to undertake trying to make a follow up. Frostpunk is one of those rare games that just has a certain special magic to it, and even if you make a really good and fun sequel, it's still never going to be quite as good as the original.
@@kaluventhebritish My current few tiny gripes with the game is that once player knows ins and outs it becomes stale 1st game found a way to some what tospice it up tiny bit aka random events 2nd game doesnt have that 2nd games ones are more hard coded at least to my understanding but i might be wrong still game it self is good tho. And yes bigest strugle to any game dev out there is a making 2nd or 3rd game in general to many examples out there specialy when 1st game was greatest by the devs so yeagh no win situation even tho there is some times a middle ground option but to many game devs are afraid of it.
@@AverageEstonianthe thing is that, the game sacrificed story for replayability because I have over 90 hours in the game despite it only have utopia and only 1 scenario. Unlike frostpunk 1, which didn’t have any replayablility with the exception of TLA, frostpunk 2 got insane replayability.
To be honest if someone asked me what a sequel to Frostpunk should be I'd more or less propose what Frostpunk 2 is.
Thanks for the vid

Will you do RTS reviews on 'D.O.R.F' and 'Dust Front' once those games are released?
You bet! both of those look exactly my kind of thing.
keep your secrets. 23:43, What's an Aphis? Fusion reactor?
Yes indeed. It's AFUS, short for Advanced Fusion. I normally try and be a bit more specific with stuff especially when doing guides but sometimes I forget 😃
@@kaluventhebritish You sound Australian. Do brits like Aussies??
@@squirrelattackspidy I'm told that many people confuse the Brit and the Aussie accents. There is always a fondness, especially as they still have our flag in the top left of theirs :)
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I agree, Stellaris' game beginning is one of the best 4X games... The problem I encounter is restarting new games every time, instead of continuing previous games... Sometimes, it feels overwhelming to get back to a game with 13 planets to manage and trying to remember what your winning strategy was...
The only film that gets the scale right is was the 1970s film waterloo and even they only had 12000 soviet tropes. And even that is like a tenth the scale of a Napoleonic army.
I think I remember reading they used a load of bulldozers and actually created those hills some of them are standing on as well!
Eugen Systems Games do a really good job of fixing this scale problem for an RTS. Each battle you deploy about a regiments worth of units which are accurate to their true size, and although you normally don’t command a whole regiment at once, the game does a good job of representing scale by having you replace lost units from your regiment as time goes on. Additionally, the game is designed in a way that emphasizes real life situations, unit sizes etc as accurately as possible
Why not just play defensively? There is no tower limit in this game. You can defend an island pretty easily. I always did this when I decided to do a chilling game from age 1-15.
