Hi, I'm Grace! I like to read a lot, mostly fantasy books, and then chat with you guys about it 💜
december reading wrap-up || Wind and Truth, one last DNF & more! 🤍
The final month of reading was an interesting one in 2024! I did my best to get through this video while sick, so I didn't discuss all of the books as much as I would have liked, but I would still really appreciate your input 😊

Reviewing 3 SPFBO finalists! // Daughter of the Beast, The Wickwire Watch & Master of the Void 📖
I ended up giving Wind and Truth two stars because of how badly I was disappointed by it. I did a full rant review on Goodreads, but it all boils down to Sanderson desperately needing a new editor who can tell him that not all his ideas are good ones.
He does 110% need that, and I hope that he’s able to take some of the criticism coming his way right now into account and look at it in good faith. I don’t think he’s ever experienced this much dissent from his fanbase since getting big!
I heard wind and truth described as major middle book syndrome. (I haven't read any of stormlight)
Interesting! I think I can see what people mean by that, in the fact that some storylines felt truncated since this series has another arc. But at the same time lots of big things happened with major consequences!
Loved this video
I'm currently reading "Earthinglings" by Sayaka Murata after enjoying "Convenience Store Woman". I didn't read the synopsis before reading/buying it. Not what I was expecting at all! It pretty much has every content warning available.
Haha wow that’s one book where it would be quite the wild experience to read it without knowing anything! I actually also don’t know what it’s about, the only thing I’ve heard before is that it does have every content warning 😅😅
The Hobbit is definitely a comfort read for me too, the Lord of the Rings books are too, but I think Hobbit is cozier (did Tolkien invent cozy fantasy?!)
Now this is a take I can get behind!!!
Great video! Colleen Hoover’s writing is definitely something I have to be in the mood for. It is very simple, straight to the point, and easy to read. If you’re into romance and want to give her another shot, you should read Reminders of him. Phenomenal book in my opinion!
I will definitely keep Reminders of Him on my list for if I’m ever looking for one of her romances!! Ty ☺️
Okay but I somehow am still very interested in Voyage of the Damned because I can love that type of silly, quirky and kinda annoying MC a lot lol. At least it can look pretty on your shelves 🤣 Really loved hearing your thoughts on Wind and Truth, I am kinda in the same boat. For me, there's no denying that Sanderson pulled off his bold vision exceptionally well, but there were quite a lot of nitpicks that really took away from the emotional 'oomph'. Would love a spoiler talk if you feel like doing one! Hope you are feeling better by now 🥰
Hahah honestly it’s a particular vibe that if you vibe with it, you’ll love the book! So worth a shot for sure ☺️ if I do a Wind and Truth video I definitely need to do some prep beforehand to make sure I hit the points I’d want to and not just ramble 😆
Would love a spoiler Wind and Truth/your overall cosmere break down video!
I’ve been thinking about doing this but definitely need to prepare notes if I’m going to film one!
I've only read the first 2 and a half Stormlight Archives. How would you rank them? And how would it rank amongst your favourite series? My book of the month was Assassin's Fate
Just my two cents, I think Words of Radiance is objectively one of the best books in the series, though Oathbringer would be my personal favourite. Wind and Truth delivers some of the most mind-blowing world building revelations in fantasy, ever. But on a character level, the earlier books are way stronger. My ranking would probably be: Oathbringer, Words of Radiance, Wind and Truth, Way of Kings, Rhythm of War.
Thats good to know! Been seeing a lot of love for Oathbringer in the last year or 2. @esmayrosalyne
@@thatsci-firogue as it deserves!!
I think my ranking would be Words of Radiance, Way of Kings, Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, Wind and Truth! With the qualifying statement being that the top 3 are extremely close and I think Oathbringer has the best ending in the series!
So many books I love on this list! While it's not my favourite GGK work I've read, Lions is probably the best. It's definitely his best ending imo, and he's generally good at those. My absolute favourite reads of 2024 were A Brightness Long Ago by Guy Gavriel Kay and Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb. I loved the vast majority of what I read of Hobb last year (Mad Ship onwards), but Fool's Errand quickly became my favourite. Fitz and the Fool solidified as my favourite friendship in fiction.
Fool’s Errand is an absolutely incredible book 🥰
You definitely have me interested in The Oathsworn Legacy.
Yay I’m so happy to hear that!!
Our wives and spells for forgetting?? YEAH GIRL💓💓💓
Yessss 💜
Amazing list, and so many different types of reads 🤩 All the love for Just for the Summer and Gentleman Bastards!! And gosh I really need to read Spells for Forgetting and Age of Madness already. Also, Oathsworn Legacy really has left a mark on me, love that found family! My top 10 of 2024 was: 1. Asunder by Kerstin Hall 2. Obsidian: Revelation by Sienna Frost 3. Hell For Hire by Rachel Aaron 4. A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows 5. Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff 6. The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting by Evanna Lynch 7. A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams 8. Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez 9. A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall 10. Riven Earth by Zammar Ahmer Happy reading 🥰
You’re single-handedly really making me want to pick up Asunder 😍 I need to bump that up my TBR! Also A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, I just have a feeling I’d vibe with it
@@GraceDionneReads YES to both of those!!
Very glad to see Republic of Thieves make it to the list, I really like that book, but it seems to get a lot of hate.
Yayyy, well it doesn’t deserve the hate!!
@ also love the rest of the pics ! So many bops, and I felt your pain for Memories of Ice
I Who Have Never Known Men has been on my tbr for the longest time, I'm so glad to hear you loved it! There are many other books here that are on my tbr too, hearing they made your favourites makes me excited to get to them (hopefully in 2025 😂)
It’s such an easy read because it’s so short! Still pretty intense but not too much
Yassss Guns of the Dawn!! team Northway!
Haha yesss he’s a great character!!
What a great list! I now definitely have to read some books I had my eye on anyway - like Our Wifes under the Sea and The Oathsworn Legacy 😍
Yay!! So glad to hear that
Such good variety on your list!
Thank you ☺️ I always try to dip my toes into different genres and I was lucky to enjoy so much of it this year!
Happy new year!! 🎉
This is an awesome list. Lots of favorites on here, and two are on my list as well!
Thank you! ☺️ which two are on your list?
The Trouble with Peace is my second favorite Abercrombie book. It was so addicting and perfectly paced. Still have to finish Gentleman Bastards! I start Republic of Thieves next month.
Ouu what’s your first favourite?
@GraceDionneReads Can't really compete with the twist- filled Last Argument of Kings imo! Those two and The Heroes are my top 3.
@ very nice! Before They Are Hanged is my personal fave from the first trilogy, but I completely agree about The Heroes !
coming back to this video after reading the tawny man trilogy to say I think the 1 x fool’s errand is genius
wow thank you 🤩
Ohhhh okay-I also share Malazan goal. I’m about to start bonehunters and absolutely need to read crippled god before 2025 is over. A lot of absolute great reads on this list! I picked up the broken binding blood over bright haven but I also loveeee the traditional cover
You really can’t go wrong with either of the BoBH covers, they’re gorgeous! 😍
12:02 I need to add it back in my tbr I own it but … my adhd brain can’t pay attention long enough to get past page 30 LOL but I’ll try again but I do love epistolary novels
Hahaha I can totally see that with a book like that!! It’s probably going to do a number on my brain
Commonwealth and Bel Canto by Ann Patchett are great!
Ouuu okay adding to list 😄
I read Piranesi...a chapter...and dnf-ed it in bookshop. But than had THAT OTHER BOOK in hands because of new cover and it turned out I already tried THAT years ahi and coundn't get into it. So Piranesi is understanding coming from that past experience.
HAHA oh dear that’s sad but maybe Suzanna Clarke is not the author for you 😅
@GraceDionneReads That is my conclusion as well. I don't pick my book based on authors but on the titel or blurb or first chapter 🤷♀️
Love to see The Ninth Rain here, I loved the series, so I'm interested to hear your thoughts! I hope you do love it since it's been on your tbr for so long 😂
Sometimes I need to be shamed into finally reading a book 😂
Todd here. I just discovered your channel Grace! Happy Holidays! I hope you get some good books as Christmas gifts!
Thanks very much, you too! ☺️
A very diverse list! :D I'm excited to see you picking up more Tchaikovsky, I loved The City of Last Chances and the second one was even better. But I have to warn you that it might not be a trilogy, the way the third book ended, but I don't know for sure. I also plan to read the third Emily Wilde's sometime soon after it comes out, felt the same way about books one and two you did :D Very excited for this, 2025 will be a great reading year x3
Ouuu okay that’s good to know about the length of the series, but it doesn’t deter me ☺️ 2025 truly does seem like a great year of book releases!
@@GraceDionneReads It's absolutely insane the number of amazing fantasy authors releasing new books in 2025! It's a tbr-conspiracy :'D
The Devils!!!! 🔥
Love this list and can’t wait to see if you get to these and what you think of them!!
Thank you! 😄 I’m really hoping to follow through on at least 2/3 of these
This is such a cool video idea! Would love if you wanted to do more (Taylor) albums. I haven’t watched the whole video yet but just wanted to leave a comment and let you know that I got very excited when I saw it, and even more when the first book you mentioned was Robin Hobb😂 I think in a weird way Hobb’s writing and Taylor’s work for me so well for similar reasons. They’re both very good at elegantly and seemingly effortlessly conveying emotions, I think. Anyway, great video!❤
Thank you so much I really appreciate that 😄 I definitely want to do more albums, it just takes me so long to come up with the book matchups 😂 but also I 100% agree with comparing Robin Hobb and Taylor Swift’s writing in terms of conveying emotions, they’re so good!
So many bops ! Also so many I wanna/need to read. Need to read more Nghi Vo as their novellas are excellent ! You are gonna adore BOBH, such an excellent book !
Yes I’m eager to read more Nghi Vo as well, it’s been too long since I have!
These X books in 20X are starting to get out of hand hahah. Love your list though, really hope that these all live up to your expectations!! Especially eager to hear your thoughts on House of Leaves, Blood Over Bright Haven and Strange & Norrell. Happy reading 🥰
Hehe I like that you mentioned three of the most intriguing reads!! I’m excited to share thoughts 🤩
❤📚📚❤️ Your list sounds amazing! I wish you an enjoyable 2025 reading year. I have Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell on my shelves, too. It's been on two monthly tbr lists, but it's daunting. 😅
Thank you so much, you too! ☺️❤️ it is a looong book haha, we just need to plan properly
@GraceDionneReads Thanks! Oh, yes, definitely! 🤗👍
Love your list of books. It's hard to find booktubers who read Fantasy.
Thank you! ☺️ there are lots of fantasy booktubers around but I think we tend not to be as widely watched! Merphy Napier, Peruse Project and Daniel Greene are probably the biggest channels ☺️
I would go into a slump with what you have on your TBR. I feel the need to read a variety of literary genres
My list is definitely fantasy heavy because it’s my favourite genre, but it’s also not a TBR in the sense that I want to read all of these right away, they are just some of my priorities! But I do have literary fiction, historical fiction, romance, non fiction and classics represented on the list so I find it’s a good balance for me ☺️
I like the variety there. I was just laughing at the end because its a good reminder for me to delete some stuff from phone before filming this weekend. I can totally imagine how you must have felt. Also, seeing you talk about your last book reminded me that Evie and I started it few months back but pushed it to the next year because of too many commitments and I totally forgot that.
Omg yes don’t forget to delete!! Usually I’m good for that but sometimes I fall behind (obviously) 😂 at least a collection of stories is easy to pick up and put back down without worrying, but I hope you guys are able to get back to it soon ☺️
Hi great reads for 2025!! 🎉
Thank you! 🥰
❤📚📚❤️ I really enjoyed The Warm Hands of Ghosts and Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands. I'm glad you loved them, too.
Heck yeah, I’m glad to hear you loved them too! 💕
Malazannnnnnnnn! Also, Warm Hands of Ghosts was a great recommendation (more of a threat)
all of my recommendations should be treated as threats
Glad you had such a brilliant month!! You're making me want to reread Warm Hands, it was sooo haunting and darkly alluring. Hope the 5-star energy continues on into December 🥰
I hope it does for you too! Wind and Truth is a good start for that! 🥰
I'm so glad to hear you liked The Warm Hands of Ghosts, it's definitely a priority for me for 2025!
I hope you love it 🥰
Warm hands of ghost supremacy!
Facts 😇
I definitely need to move warm hands of ghosts up on my tbr!
Yessss I’ll be so glad if I can get more people to read it sooner ☺️
Folklore is one of my favourite albums of all time as well!! A true masterpiece! Ooh yes, I would definitely agree with seven and The Ocean at the End of the Lane, they both have that nostalgia for the freedom of childhood, but also a lot of darkness, especially when looking back at childhood from an adult perspective. The Winter of the Witch and mad woman is a perfect pairing! The entire Winternight trilogy fits the vibe of that song so well. I feel like The Witch's Heart might also fit for mad woman, too. There are so many books on here I am so compelled to read now and will definitely listen to the songs you've matched them with when I do! My top priority to read from this list is Spells for Forgetting. I would love to see your ideas for other albums!
I have a feeling you’ll enjoy Spells for Forgetting! And maybe I need to move Witch’s Heart up my radar haha 👀
I think maybe for this is me trying it could be catcher in the rye?? I read it a while ago so I don’t know if it fits that well but that is what came to my mind
Oh yeah I could see that! Lots of trauma in that book!
Listened to the album a thousand times for us! That is some video preparation! 😅
I’m nothing if not dedicated 😂
Vigilante Sh*t: Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie 🤣
Hahaha very appropriate 💯
OMG Grace this is phenomenal!! folklore is also my favourite album (up there with evermore and TTPD), so this video just sings to my soul. Loved hearing you interpret the songs and match books, I think you freaking nailed it (even the ones you felt less confident about). Especially the LPQ one, SPOT ON!! Also, for mad woman, I think They Never Learn by Layne Fargo is also a whole vibe. And Illicit Affairs makes me think of You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi. Also, Betty is sooo good and your pick makes so much sense when you explained it. For me, Jas Hammonds' books come to mind for that one. Okay I can go on for days here hahaha, thanks for putting in the effort of making this, I looooved it!! 🤩🤩
Ahhh thank you Esmay 😍 They Never Learn would also be a great pick for mad woman I totally agree!! I’ll have to look into Jas Hammonds I’ve never heard of her!
