The Most Disturbing Books I’ve Read (trigger warning)
Thanks, I wanted to start reading extreme horror and really didn't know that! Now I know I don't want to read extreme horror but splatterpunk. This will save me a lot of time and nerves. Thank you so much!
hellooo , shameless dark romance girlie here… i enjoyed Haunting Adeline (didn’t understand the huge hype tho) but i have such a negative disposition towards DNFing bc mama ain’t raise no quitter so i will suffer through most anything lol wanting to get into extreme horror and am planning on starting w The Slob 🫶🏻 i am looooving your content evrywhere
And here I was thinking the definitions were the other way around! Thanks for the info 👍🏽👍🏽
😂I feel like I'm on crack
I’m so glad I found your channel! Subscribed today. Thank youuuuu
You do the same as I do.. I read my horror with my bear!!! 😊
I ALSO DNF Hunting Adeline, I want to finish it but it’s just so slow. I also DNF Cows, I hate that I did but it was not grabbing my attention 😢
I prefer splatterpunk over extreme horror, but Triana is one author for me who can do no wrong, and I love all his books regardless! Lol
D E Mccluskey? Isn't that the same guy who made a splatterpunk novel about cheese?
I really liked your definition of splatter punk beacuse I found books like full brutal not for me and I wanted more of a meaning like I found in playground
I also had no idea there was a difference between those two lol ive always seen people use them interchangeable
thank you for this! i've been a little confused about how to categorize and discuss different types of horror/disturbing books because, as you said, people tend to use terms interchangeably these days. now i can say that i love splatterpunk but don't usually like extreme horror. great video!!
i feel like (as someone who hasn't and doesn't want to read) Tampa is just a strange mix of pretty privilege, the idea that p3dophilia is just men, and just a really, really weird and specific fantasy
Loved this!! Definitely sharing this since this is a question I get asked a ton when I tell people what type of books I read. 🙌💀
THANK YOU!
So like, these definitions were totally flipped in my mind lol I thought splatterpunk was gore for the sake of shock gore, and extreme horror was just like extremely scary (or whatever) but still with a plot blah blah blah. Interesting
Well this was truly insightful and I learned a lot
Thanks for explaining the difference. I think it would be a good idea when writing reviews or talking about books to review them as extreme horror or splatterpunk and remind authors to label their books correctly.
i didn’t even know this. i definitely was using them interchangeably so now i know to look a lil deeper and see if there’s meaning behind the gore or if it’s gore for gore’s sake :)))
This is my favourite topic to yap about, my boyfriend hears about it at least three times a week😭😂
I really don't think that the "outrage" side have any point.. Are those books smut? Yes.. Are they not that good in the writing aspect? Yes.. Are they fun for someone? Yes.. Should kids read them? No.. Are those covers purposely cutsie? Yes.. Could they be swapped with kids books? Yes.. Should there be more some kind of sticker with warnings? Yes.. I don't think that if this would happen with kids films, animated but with heavy steamy content, you would defend that.. Yes parents should be more involved, but lets not pretend that we don't understand where the problem is..
While they aren’t necessarily advertising to younger kids. The cartoon covers can sometimes mislead ppl. I do understand the need for it to be a bit more discreet bc it’s weird if the cover shows it’s a smutty book and you feel weird for reading it in public. Sometimes bookstores or whoever decides on the sections to put the books in can mess up in their judgment. Sometimes they see a romance and/or fantasy book written by a woman and they think it’s suitable for YA when it actually should be in the adult section. That’s a bigger issue with the industry as a whole bc they think most stuff women write fits in YA. They aren’t necessarily saying hey read this kids but a young kid who ode not ready to read smut could come across it and not realize that abt the books. On the one hand sometimes it needs to be more clear based on the section the books are located in at a bookstore. On the other hand it’s important to do your research abt a book and see if it’s age appropriate and for the parent to do that research as well. It is a bit of a tricky situation.
A good video idea for you (maybe lol) is talking about the subgenres in extreme horror and giving a rec within that subgenre
I loooooove your book reccomendations!!! Thank you for the site rec as well. Pls never stop sharing. I followed here + insta from tiktok! :)
3:15 “it’s not up to advertisers to deem what is and isn’t for kids” sure you can say that, but it 100% is their job to advertise what is in their book- especially with content that normally wouldn’t be for kids (nsfw specifically) so that parents can decide if they want their kids to consume that. it is their job to properly advertise to the reader what is in the book period
Why don't you ever tag me, sister? Thanks for this, homie!
Omg my bad!!!! I will I promise!!!
@@evereadshorror you're all good. It's a KILLER video.
Dark romance is on a whole different level and can’t really be compared to regular romance books. Dark romances do have some problematic components to it. I personally don’t like smutty romance because the smut scenes make me physically uncomfortable but I’m not going to shame someone who likes them
Love godless like how are the books so cheap!?
Kris wasn't being shaming on what people read. I think she made some good points especially about the Icebreaker book on how it looks childish and because of that 10 year olds are reading it and parents aren't doing anything about it. Can we agree that is at least a line crosser that they shouldn't read that at that age. Plus Kris is honestly giving out her opinion on the books because she said she read them, so at least she's giving out her own booktok opinion about what she thought on the books. Again I don't think Kris was being judgmental/shaming just giving her opinion in her own comedy style way that we love. ouo
Ps out of all the people on this platform that talk about extreme horror books, you are definitely my favourite 🤌🏻
@@PaigeFalmer THANK YOU SO MUCH ILY
I really love your videos here and on tiktok so thank you for all your work into them, I sit and binge them throughout the day 🥰
Did no one go after Papa Meat for his video on the same topic? That one was a lot worse 😅 Kris was pretty tame compared to many other people who’ve covered the topic. I’m assuming some of her fans are smut readers and got offended. They don’t want their favorite creator to think they’re weird, when a lot of people do think smut books are weird. Just cause we think it’s weird doesn’t mean we think negatively of the people who read them. I personally would rather read something of substance but would never push that agenda onto others. There’s plenty of genres out there & no one reads them all. Theres a niche for everyone & yeah, they’re gonna get dogged on once in a while when someone doesn’t like the genre.
Love Godless, a lot of great books that I can't find anywhere else. Also adding on how to send books to kindle, the url the app links to is just the amazon url /sendtokindle to drag and drop files. :) That way folks don't even need to download the desktop app if they don't want to.
3:00 i’ve seen smut books in children sections before. i agree that parents should know what their kids are reading, but i was reading fanfic at the age of 13 and my parents not knowing what i read im also a reader who doesn’t like smut. it’s not my thing yet i don’t shame anyone for liking it i feel like people should share if they like smut books and why they don’t (like kris said). no need to shame anyone for sharing that opinion you can agree to disagree with people i don’t get why she got so much hate for sharing HER opinion just because you disagree with her (not you, but who you’re taking about) so, i agree what you said and i also agree with her
@@BjornBjergsen smut books in children sections is wild!!! I agree with everyone having their own opinions! A lot of my romance readers were not happy with the video at all, I just wanted to talk about it
i definitely agree with some of what you're saying, like how you shouldn't shame people for what they like, but kris also has some good points. i genuinely think she wasn't trying to shame the people who read these kinds of books, but the way it comes off definitely makes it seem that way. it's all just things that get lost in translation. she had good intentions, but it didn't come out the way she intended.
@@Titanium_gremlin yes!!!! Agree!!
I'm pretty sure she said multiple timea during the video she wasn't shaming anyone for what they're reading, she just doesn't see the appeal.
@@kateelario6235 the titles that she had and the convo that she was having was shaming people, you can talk about not liking something or seeing the appeal without shaming the people who like it.
@@kateelario6235 I’m saying this as someone who actively doesn’t like or see the appeal of romance books I don’t read em. I’m just happy to see people read though
Yes, that was her EXPLICIT EXPLANATION around this whole ordeal. These.... people are just trying AND FAILING to slam her down. Good comment kateelario6235
@@evereadshorrorwell then why even make this vid when it’s her opinion
❤
I can agree with sone points you i definitely thinks it's weird to unlisted the video
babe shut up, eve posted ☕️
The issue with so many of these books is how they blatantly romanticize abuse and toxic relationships, framing them as desirable or aspirational. While adults might have the capacity to separate fiction from reality, teenagers-particularly those aged 14 to 18-are still developing their understanding of relationships, making this a serious problem. Research shows that consistent exposure to harmful media shapes attitudes and behaviors, and young people are especially vulnerable to this influence. Studies on violent video games, such as those published in Pediatrics and the Journal of Adolescent Health, prove that constant exposure can desensitize kids to violence and even foster aggressive tendencies. The same principle applies here: books that normalize or glamorize abusive relationships risk conditioning young readers to believe these dynamics are acceptable or even romantic. The effects are real, and dismissing them is irresponsible. As someone who has seen the devastating impact of abuse on people I care about, I find these books not only disturbing but outright dangerous. They trivialize the real, lasting pain caused by abuse, turning it into entertainment. That’s not just irresponsible-it’s harmful, and it perpetuates a culture where toxic behaviors are excused and even celebrated. Authors need to wake up to the damage they’re doing. If they insist on writing about abusive or toxic relationships, then those stories need to be clearly labeled as 18+ with explicit warnings about their themes. Marketing this content to teenagers is unacceptable and reckless. Authors who glorify toxicity without accountability are complicit in the harm their stories cause. They have a responsibility to show what healthy relationships look like, or at the very least, stop peddling damaging narratives to young, impressionable readers.
@@elsjestruckel1733 I don’t read the genre so I really cannot speak on if they glorify anything like I said in the video lol i was just pointing out how we shouldn’t shame other for what they read. Also children shouldn’t be reading these books and their guardians should be making sure that they don’t
I do agree this is usually the main concern I have with some romance novels. Sadly they get mislabeled so ppl aren’t always expected for that harmful narrative to be in that book. Dark romance is usually clear on this is purely fiction and it’s easier to separate that these aren’t acceptable bc that’s kinda the point of the book is to explore stuff that very toxic to make an interesting story. There are some romance books out there that support the toxic behaviors more. There has always been some toxic nature and behavior in a lot of romance books that gets glorified to an extent. I also feel like it’s gotten worse and it’s not as easy to tell bc they get put into the wrong category. I haven’t read dark romance but I’ve heard someone who does read it explain it in a similar way that I just did. I’ve read some romance usually not too bad with the toxicity but it’s usually present.
Those books are really bad books, but as an adult and free person it is your choice to make and if you want to read bad books you're free to do so. I've definitely read some bad books myself. It does bother me however when books promote extremist opinions, racism, or sexual misconduct. I don't share the belief that all books are good regardless of the content. There are some books that can do more harm than good especially to younger and more impressionable audience.
@@visenya8 when it comes to art forms like literature good and bad are purely subjective in my opinion, and those two words are determined by the person consuming the art form. And when it comes to media that is harmful to younger audiences it falls on the parents to protect the children and filter their media consumption not on the media creators themselves as long as they aren’t actively trying to advertise to kids. But I get what you’re saying!
i LOVE your energy but also i agree with everything single word you have said omg . i saw kris’ video but didn’t get to watch it and i noticed the title change a bunch of times then disappear and i was like wtf. i don’t have insta or tiktok so this filled me in
You don't have to be "good at it." This apart from your personality sets you apart from other youtubers. I can relate though. Ive wanted to start a video channel but I'm not going to lie I'm so fucking insecure. Do your thing girl just subscribed!
I’ve been wondering when someone was finally going to get pushback on their booktok commentary videos lol idk, it’s just so tired & spent at this point too. I wasn’t offended by it, it’s just annoying to keep seeing. Also, the “kids are reading these books,” is the same rhetoric that ppl hound on for book bans for books they don’t agree with
@@afragglereads it is tiring, it’s exhausting the constant judgement of people who are literally just reading, just reading a fictional book, like I don’t understand why it upsets so many people. I thought reading was a good thing 😂😂
Oh girl you gotta try Holly Black’s books!! Start with Tithe though 😎 you’re welcome. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Everyone who has borrowed it from me has literally become obsessed with the series
