Penyffrydd Station
This is my latest 009 project. The layout was designed for exhibiting, but is home-based, currently it is set-up in a spare bedroom at home. The main aim was to create a scene that enabled me to run long eight to twelve coach trains behind some of my larger locos. There is one island-platform station with track climbing at one end and descending at the other.

A second look at the latest project

This video follows on from my "Nant Gwynant" which was uploaded a little while ago. It shows the progress that has been made with the new layout and gives you a peep at what is usually behind the scenes.

A first look at the development of my latest project - a new OO9 home layout inspired by the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways. There is still a great deal to do on two of the four scenic boards, and photographic back-scenes still need to be added.

Experience a ride in the cab of a diesel on the Clydach Railway - an 009 narrow gauge model railway built by Richard Holder and operated by members of Oxfordshire Narrow Gauge Modellers.
How did you make Lillian and covertcoat I really need to know badly lol (I'm acctually from launceston and I've been on all three engines
Thanks for your interest in my LAUNCESTON layout. All the Quarry Hunslet locos were made by adapting kits that were originally available from Brian Madge, but, sadly are no longer available. I created the tenders for LILIAN and COVERTCOAT using brass sheet on a plastic 009 wagon chassis . The models were hand-painted and lined using Fox Transfers. More details can be found at the website - www.richardholder.org.uk/.
Excellent layout and I assume most of the stock is scratch built? I was impressed by the loco/ train movements looked so realistic do you run to a set schedule?
Thanks for your comments, Paul.. Most of the stock is adapted from various kits. The locos were built by modifying kits originally provided by Brian Madge. I do usually follow a sequence - it is really just three trains running into the station and running round before returning, with occasionally a change of loco. Best Wishes Richard
It is simply marvellous - So talented Richard and realistic. I am mesmerised in watching the Video - It is just so real. Thank you .
Thanks David. Glad you enjoyed the video. Railway modelling has given me so much pleasure over the years - especially since i retired. Richard
Thanks for your encouragement, Warren
Thanks Richard, the layout is looking great!
Thanks for your encouragement, Warren. Richard
Superb looking layout. Great production, will sub for more of this. Cheers!
Thanks for your encouraging comments. Good to have you "on board".
A lovely layout. Who makes the excavator?
Hi Andy Thank you for your encouraging comment. The model excavator was produced by Wiking in HO scale. I detailed and repainted it. It is not an exact scale model of the mini excavator that Nigel and Kay own at the railway, but it does provide a reasonable representation
@@richardholder thanks for the information, I'll see if I can locate one. We visited the Launceston Steam Railway a couple of years ago but didn't get to look around much as it was raining! The cafe was nice though. We will go back for a visit one day.
@@richardholder would you mind telling me the height of this excavator, please? I want to make sure that it will fit under the bridges on my layout when it’s on a flat wagon. Thanks.
@@UncleB1735 Hi again Andy. The little mini-excavator is almost exactly 3cm high. Hope this helps. All the best Richard
@@richardholder thank you.
Hi Richard. I'm moving the Kenavon show online this year (20/21 Feb) - do you mind if I include a link to this video? Thanks
You are very welcome to use this 'clip' I may be able to send a more updated video within a few days. Richard H
Coming along very nicely Richard. Cheers!
Thanks Warren. Good to hear from you. Hope you are able to enjoy Christmas inspite of everything! Richard
Excellent Richard! This is turning into another First Class railway. Happy Christmas, Noel
Thanks Noel. Happy Christmas to you and your loved ones too. Richard
The new layout already looks great. Look forward to the next video. Cheers
Many thanks, Warren. Progress is slow and steady, but I will post a second installment when a little more scenic work has been completed. Best Wishes Richard
Always loved watching this one Richard. Noel
This has always been accessible from my website, www.richardholder.org but I only realised last night that it was not generally available on UA-cam. Now updated. Richard
Thanks Richard. I love the amount of detail you've put in, very inspiring!
Thanks Warren, I always aim to add as much detail as I can in all my layouts. I believe that it is the small details that bring the scene to life. Richard
Truly excellent Richard! Noel
Your comments are always so encouraging, Noel. I do appreciate your input. Thanks Richard
I recently visited this line and fell in love with it, and narrow gauge. Fantastic model- Really captures what the railway is all about.
Thank you Liam. I also love Launceston Steam Railway. Nigel and Kay Bowman, who own and run the railway are such a lovely couple and they have created such a unique atmosphere there.
Lovely layout Richard. I always greatly enjoy your layouts and I guess this is a new one. If it was the one you had at ExpoNG I didn't manage to get a look at it as I was involved with the 5.5mm Association stand and didn't get a proper look around. Hopefully, I'll get to have a good look next time Woodbury Wharf is out and about. Best wishes, Noel
Thanks for your comments, Noel. I took my LAUNCESTON layout to ExpoNG this year. Woodbury has so far only appeared at Exeter and Thorncombe. It was original a small triangular layout that was an entry in the Dave Brewer Challenge at Swanley back in 2013. It was then called Windrush Wharf. I extended this little layout to create WOODBURY.
Sorry NoelThe reply is, of course, from me not my wife, Linda.. Don't know how this happened!!Richard
Very good adaptation of the real one. Can I ask where did you get the engines?😊
Thanks for your comment,. All the locos were built from adapted kits that were produced by Brian Madge. Unfortunately, Brian has been unwell and as far as I am aware, the kits are not available at the moment. However, Bachmann have announced that they are to produce four Quarry Hunslet locos including DOROTHEA from Launceston, but the release date has not yet been announced. Richard
@@richardholder Two years on and the release dates have STILL not been announced. The release of the Baldwins became farcical.
Fantastic model - really captures the railway. I can only dream of building something this good !!
Thanks Graham. So glad that you appreciate my version of Launceston
What a lovely layout. It captures the feel of the railway extremely well. Well done!
Thank you Garry. Sorry for the delay in replying. Richard
do you use uncouplers on your layout?
I use Greenwich NG couplers and a Gaugemaster n-gauge Electromagnet to uncouple.
we're is this?
So sorry that I missed this question. The Real Launceston Steam Railway is situated in Launceston Cornwall, UKRichard
Beautifully modelled, probably the best 009 model I have seen for a long time
Many thanks Steve.
Just superb. I know the line well. Thank you
Thank you Chris. I really enjoyed building the layout. Nigel and Kay at Launceston have been so helpful and encouraging.Richard
Wonderful. Just the sort of layout I'd like to create.
