Songs From the Second Floor (Long Takes)
Переглядів 49 тис.15 років тому
Here is a different use of long takes: no camera movements, just static sequence shots done in tableaux style and for purposes of (deadpan) comedy. Far from simple, the decision to do each scene in a single shot means that the filmmaker must exert absolute precision in terms of camera placement and blocking of the actors.
Shooting "Days of Heaven"

This is an excerpt from an interview included on the CC edition of Terrence Malick's film Days of Heaven (1978). John Bailey was the camera operator on the film. (The DP was Nestor Almendros.) One of the most stunning looking films in the history of cinema. Large portions of the film were shot outdoors with little or no artificial light in what is called the "magic hour", the period in which su...

This is my "mash-up" video of Chris T.'s first Bolex project. The (gorgeous) B/W 16mm footage was projected onto a screen and re-filmed with a digital camera. It was then downloaded to Final Cut Pro where it was (slightly) edited and given a soundtrack: "Chord Simple" by the experimental electronic band Broadcast.
TD Telephoto

Good example of what an image looks like shot with a long-focal length lens (i.e. telephoto lens): the element in focus (in this case, DeNiro playing Travis Bickle) is "abstracted" from his environment. Note how much more depth (and focus) there is in front of Travis than behind him. As he moves forward, the focus is "pulled" to keep the same distribution of focus and blur, flatness and depth.
Let's just try to relax, shall we?
the MOST BORING piece of CRAP ever put on the big screen, want a nap, watch this crap!!
this film style reminds me of photographer called Gregory Crewdson, he uses similar style in his photography art.
What's the name of the song please? I really need it
Brooke Adams should have played Karen Carpenter!
Fascinating description how they captured the light on these shots. RIP Linda Manz August 14, 2020; her narration made this movie.
Haskell Wexler (Medium Cool) also worked on the photography
Linda manz is the soul of this film
BLIMEY. MY UA-cam VID'S ARE LESS SHIT THAN I THOUGHT... DBM. ENGLAND.
BBC radio November 2019 Simon Beaufoy on why Terrence Malick's Days Of Heaven breaks all the rules of cinema and is still a masterpiece. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000bp47
So delighted to hear that they're finally going to remake this film with 'The Rock' in the Richard Gere role
LMAO
The first time I watched days of heaven on bluray I just cried for like the first five minutes. beautiful. just beautiful. I really couldn't help it. it was overwhelming. lolol legendary film.
My good friend Bob Gould was the Decorator on this film. We were at the Academy last week to see a beautiful print of the film screened. It still blows my mind.
One of my favorite films of all time. But then I saw 'Black Panther.'
I played this film first run at some theaters I owned. As a theater owner I was blown away by the way the film looked on the big screen as well as the way it would sound. “A Summer Story” is the only other film to rival its’ presentation. Audiences loved both films ❤️
Unbelievable
this is what lacking in indian cinema we should learn something
Sam Sheppard in his prime. What a great guy. RIP.
The BGM is also beautiful. I loved this movie and Richard Gear when young.
i only want to know where it was shot? the place is so amazing..
Alberta, south of Calgary in the foothills Same as Unforgiven and the original Superman
wow really?? God is amazing! i cant wait to see it. i am preparing a visa for my stay in Leduc alberta.
i only want to know where it was shot? the place is so amazing..
Canada
i need this in spanish :(
This movie blew me away when I saw the cinematography for the first time last year, never had seen it but bought it on bluray criterion. Wow just wow.
Grande indeed! Nestor studied at school with my father, and my father introduced me to him. I will never forget the two hours talking. It is a shame that he couldn't shoot Good Fellas. He had an agreement with Robert Benton on Billy Bathgate.
Grande Nestor Almendros !!
There is NOTHING better than depressed magicians!
A visual masterpiece...even if you mute the volume, the film tells the story beautifully and so purely. What an underrated gem.
hello
Spectacular cinematography
@ElTuco84- I agree; the 70's was the last golden era of movie making in America. The films were so original and adventurous. You don't see this kind of film making anymore.
***** Have you actually seen Heaven's Gate? Because it's a gorgeous film, & amazing subject-matter & storytelling. Part of the reason why that film was considered a "flop" had to do with egos, people wanting so badly for Cimino to fail. It certainly made way less money than it cost, but it's a beautiful film, reminds me in ways of Days of Heaven, & I think it will be reassessed over the coming years. It's def worth watching.
Andersson is a non recognized master
its tragic, people call all these american directors the next kubrick yet heres andersson who is evoking the same sense of framing and satire kubrick would be proud of
how can people think this film lacks story, it is about love in such a beautiful sense
You can see why Randal Kleiser absolutely wanted Nestor to shoot The Blue Lagoon after seeing this film. It is visually spectacular. I think his work in TBL is just as good imo :)
fascinating!!!
Increíble trabajo.
Seeing this now I realize why Richard Gere was such a sex symbol.
Any chance of a longer clip - I don't have blu ray and there is no UK copy I can find. THanks
It's my favorite film also. I've probably watched it 5 or 6 times, but the truth is, I couldn't even really tell you what happens, plot-wise. For me, watching a film is simply an experience, like hearing music, or looking at a painting. When I think of this experience, Days of Heaven, I have the most wonderful feeling. That's why I say it's my favorite.
The 1970's Hollywood films never stop to amaze me, definitely the greatest era in american film history.
@esiotrot17 Like you, I hesitated, I would say this was my personal favourite, the best movie I've ever seen, but I would always be conscious of the fact that I've only seen a fraction of all movies (and I believe I'm a lot older than you!) However, I'd be willing to bet that nothing could ever surpass its effect on me... I had an epiphany last year when I read that Malick was influenced by the German philosopher, Martin Heidegger. Ah, NOW I understand why I found Days of Heaven stunning...
Yes, some very nice filmmaking, and a few scenes deserving of the overused descriptor "beautiful" (e.g. the wide-angle 'magic hour' shots, the wind moving the wheat around like golden water, etc.). As a piece of drama, however, I felt it was only OK, and less than the sum of its parts. Never nearly as engrossing as "Badlands".
@jclabburn It's The Criterion Collection. All Hail the Criterion Collection. :)
I used to say that this was my favorite movie ever, but now I'm seen more movies and I feel comfortable saying this is the BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME
supurb!!!!!
Thanks for putting this up :)
