As the european viewer that would innevitably come along, I must say that when Ivan asked himself what the concrete proposal would be, he suggested asking the UK what it really wants, do you want a close relationship and all that that entails, or a more distant relationship? having seemingly forgotten all the times that has been done already. His idea of resetting the relationship by following the mistakes of the past seem to match groundhogday more then May's actions ever have.
It would be useful for the British public if he not only said how the EU will use its power, but also said, 1. that the UK ofc did exactly the same within the EU in negotiations with third countries and 2. that the UK would do exactly the same now if it only had that power outside of the EU, which it hasn’t. YOU created this mess, no one else! With the other security ‚partner’ you are deeply connected (five eyes) - not very convincing.. Even he‘s not free of English exceptionalism there..
Now. Here is the man who knows what he's talking about. Forget the fantasies and wishful thinking of Raab, Johnson and Co. Sir Ivan Rogers is the man. His slim volume distilling all aspects of this epic folly quite succinctly, should be in every household.
Really good talk. There is a serius lack of people like him in higher positions in the U.k. But, in one major point i disagree, there is no way for a soften stand of the EU in the negotiations for a better future relationship in the future, because this means rewarding the political, and jurnalistic class of the U.K for their absolut irresponsibility in, at least, two decades. In my opinion, a no deal would be in the long term the best medicine for the british society.
Will be interested in what Sir Ivan Rogers will have to say either this January or February, but then again a month is a long time in politics.
Even though most of us knew the essential gist of Sir Ivan's analysis, to see it laid out authoritatively and comprehensively is both shocking and profoundly depressing.
Under 2000 views by the end of year 2019... makes not for many more informed voters. Sir Rogers got the forecast right, although in the hindsight it is irrelevant. Divergence is central in this interminable tedious process. Goes well beyond end of Dec 2020...
how may and co ever let this man walk away is beyond me ..........................
Thank you for making this lecture available. Sir Ivan undoubtedly is the expert in the UK with the deepest insight and most extensive experience into these matters. His wealth of contacts with the EU side and insight into the UK politics of decissionmaking gives a scaring amount of credibility to his analysis. It is frustrating that this lecture accumulates only 1500 views and was not widely reported on in UK media. This is a clear indication to me how disconnected from the facts the UK position on Brexit is and it does foreshadow Sir Ivans most gloomy forecasts.
Not sure why 4 people don't like this - it's an essential public service.
I always enjoy listening to someone who is on top of the issue they are talking about. This is shaping up to be an historic and epic example of strategic, tactical, political and bureaucratic incompetence, hubris and arrogance on the part of the British state.
It's just an impossiblity for the EU to give any ground. The UK wants to get all the benefits of membership of the EU without contributing, follow any rules etc etc. There is just no way the EU will not turn around and tell the UK to do one.... And once the UK is out the EU could give less of a damn what the population of a 3rd country thinks of the EU....
Can't wait for the truck of reality to hit really hard....
I read the lecture but listening anyway.
My mate Dave says its all project fear so I dont know who this bloke thinks he is.
