Stevie C: the place to be. Electronics, PCB design, LEDs, neons, PICAXE, repairs & random stuff.
PIC a letter 595 Shift Register LED Matrix Text Display PCB
A very hastily edited meander into more 595 Shift Register experiments.
The problem with the previous project was that once I'd soldered the LEDs to spell something, it was stuck saying that forever. This new version has a grid of leds, which can be programmed to spell anything you want.
The LED characters are sequenced in using a PICAXE (but a PIC, Arduino, Raspberry Pi or even a ZX Spectrum should also work). The project isn't perfect, however. There were a few design issues and problems that started after the build. But I ran out of time for further investigation...
I managed to lose a broken PSU PCB, 2 white LED cards, 2 pink LED cards, some of the footage...
Basically at the time of editing, I was in the process of moving from Dundee to Twickenham for work, and had a lot of stuff to get done for the move, so my editing standards slipped even more than normal. But you'll get the idea. Advice and suggestions in the comments as usual please :)
Quite appropriately, the music used is Sunrise Drive by South London HiFi.

Not in this time tho. Just trying to bash a video out so the algorithm doesn't punish me. I was asked to design these PCBs for a pub in Dundee. There's not much to them, just RGB LEDs, resistors and a USB cable. Building the FTT RGB LED Flood PCB #toriesout
Переглядів 1514 місяці тому
This project takes a PCB I designed during lockdown and shrinks it down to make use of a burned out cheap LED RGB Floodlight. The LEDs start up in-sync and slowly drift, giving a rather pleasing slow morphing effect with decent light output. The project is designed to be serviceable. Even tho I kinda enjoyed some bits of lockdown (is that weird?), there are some parts I'd like to forget - the t...

It's that time again. My mail and social media are overflowing with propaganda, jingoism and lies. I designed and constructed this project to vent my frustration. Let's not forget the tories' absymal performance during lockdown and their lack of support for my industry (and others). Celebrate Pride 2024 with one of my A4-size Pride Flag VU Meters. This is a project based on the LM3916 and LM386 op-amps. I built a prototype a year (maybe 2) ago, and decided I should update the design for something bigger and neater. Building Das Volkskugel PCB (VW Orb)

A simple PCB that took over 40 hours to design, and over 5 to build. I'm continuing my theme of German PCB names because, reasons. Hopefully this project counts as "technical art" - I built this one-off PCB as a present for an acquaintance of mine, who is a massive fan of Vivienne Westwood. Beyond that, it’s just rgb LEDs, a 12v power supply and a design mistake (and how I worked around it). #e...
LED Signage: getting shifty with the 74HC595

This is an LED sign I designed for a local electrical shop, based on 74HC595 shift registers and the PICAXE 08m2 & 18m2. The 08M2 controls the shiftiness of the business name, while the 18M2 controls the RGB effects of the OPEN text. Like just about everything I build, this was inspired by a @bigclivedotcom project, technically two: his LED scripting sign, and his LED letters from which my Das ...

I filmed this during The Event. Thought I may as well upload it on MeTube (after it sat on my hard drive for over 2 years). Carrots should only be given as an occasional treat (due to the relatively high sugar content). I cut the carrot into small chunks for this game. Another UKing Update (unscripted - can you tell?) from the UKing PARcan "series". This will only make sense if you've watched my last video, and maybe the one before that too ;) I wanted to know if these parcans come supplied with 4W or 12W LED chips. The replacements I buy on Eboo and AliEx suggest 4W due to the layout of the r/g/b/w dies. TL;DW The chips are being run at about 1.5W each. Do y...

I still have your BigClivicle and Testicicle projects here - it'll be getting on for a year since you kindly sent them over! I have in mind a funky application for them as part of a wider decorative feature that I still haven't got around to starting. I really ought to get on with it! I hope the new job is going well?

Love these videos, especially where you're troubleshooting unknown problems!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the repair video, this is excellent! I've got a few lights of my own and haven't had to worry about repairs yet, but I'm sure I'll have to. The other thing that I've been wondering about is whether it's possible to DIY a fixture like this, or more specifically, with a nice big heatsink and a RGBWA+UV 200W Chip, breathe new life into an older leko by gutting it and using the housing to hold a DMX controller board and heat sink to cool the SMD Hex LED.
@@majorredbeard there’s plenty of “kits” to be found on aliexpress; not an actual kit but every component (chassis, psu, led board, driver) can be bought individually. Plenty 200W heat sinks too. Actually had plans to mod a halogen disco scanner to use led but life got in the way as usual.
@@steviecandtheplace2b Well that's cool - I've never seen that - can you give one as an example? My searches haven't really proven anything that looks like a kit. Are they PAR fixtures?
@@majorredbeard yes they’re all PARcan components; but it’s just occurred to me that the led arrays are 3 parallel sets of 6 rgbwauv/rgbw LEDs in series. So maybe you could also drive a higher wattage “point source” chip from it? Maybe bodge with power resistors? Needs more research. Will report back with AilExpress searches in due course.

how do you set your multi-meter?
I’ve got it set on ammeter (a direct short); I’m not actually using the meter, I’m just needing the probes to short out each led in turn (very importantly: with the LEDs on the lowest dimmer setting to avoid blowing the remaining working ones.)

I love picaxe! I find it easier to program coming from parallax boe-bot. I'm glad they are still around. I might pick it up again.
Dude so wild to see a BoE bot reference! I still have my Basic Stamp 2 around somewhere. It's absolutely wild to me that they're still around doing their thing with Propeller when Arduino became some dominant. I'm really curious, how did you get into the Parallax set of controllers? @@evanbarnes9984 I had the BoE bot kit more than 10 years ago as my first dive to microcontrollers. The robot tank is a big draw for me too. It was easy to learn and mod.
