Learn Esraj & Dilruba Online
Приєднався 28 вер 2021
I fell in love with the Dilruba/Esraj over 16 years ago. There were no teachers around to learn from where I lived at the time. UA-cam was brand new so there wasn't much there either. I remember scavenging through the internet to find anything, something, or someone to learn from. Eventually, I was able to study with various teachers in the U.K. and India. So I created this channel to share with someone who might be in a situation like I was. Here I'll share the basics from what I learned and whatever else along the way. Hope you enjoy!

Thank you for uploading this. Extremely helpful.

Are defferent raga played doing tuning 🤔🤔🤔
Only the sympathetic strings are tuned differently according to what raag you are playing
Judging strictly from the sound I heard on this video, I prefer the esraj. The resonance of the extra sympathetic strings on the dilruba tend to overpower the melody line. Keith is right about machine heads for tuning the instrument, but I have always preferred wooden pegs because they are traditional and more “organic”. I think Saraswati prefers them too! 😀 As for the “tar shehnai”, it’s great for studio work and filmscores but maybe not so much for live performance. Super video, great demonstration, loved every second of it.
Thank you so much for your feedback! I watched some of your videos! Very impressive work,...NIce to meet you here my friend! 🙏
Not sure what any of the notes are for ga pa da and all that, coming from a casual guitar player, this is very confusing
@@imrob5363 sa re ga ma pa da ni sa is equivalent to do re mi fa so la ti do. Whole step whole step half step ect. So whatever you choose your tonic then you can figure out what all those notes are exactly. Typically the range of a Dilruba or an Esraj is from C - E. Here is a link to my video that may make it easy to understand ua-cam.com/video/pJr1zUpUSoM/v-deo.htmlsi=3q-WnSdBsFL_ocYn
Thank you for the video! My question to you: Is it possible to take lessons from you as a cellist? Got an Sarangi here, but basicly I am interested in learning raags like Nat Bhairav, Desh, Bhairavi, Kamaj, Kafi to aply them on cello. Have a great time! Christopher

Hey Keith, do you have any tips on playing with western instruments? Been trying to jam out with a guitar and dilruba but something sounds a little off and I can't put my finger on it
Can you tell me what are some of the things that might be a problem that youre hearing? Can you give me any other details?
When you play with the Guitar is your Dilruba in tune? and are the sympathetic strings in tune? tune meaning the strings are tuned to the notes that you are using with the guitar player? Sometimes you may have some sympathetic strings that are out of tune and or are tuned but to other notes that are out of the key youre playing in. BECAUS ETHE DIlruba is micro tonal, when you glide past those notes you may activate them and you hear these strings resonate that are out of key to the modes or scales that you are playing. These are a few possibilities
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 hey Keith I think a whole bunch of my sympathetic strings were sharp. I wasn't sure if it was because dilruba isn't equal temperament or something. Will experiment with it a bit further to see that was the problem.
@@Upa1824 Yeah I figured that was the issue. Having your Sympathetic strings well tuned especially again tuned to the key and mode you are playing in makes a world of a difference. Cheers!
thank you for this information. however, it seems that the tuning is more-or-less up to the player. i have the strings tuned pa - sa - ma - sa, and therefore on the pa string, sa is the 5th fret. this gives me the tuning for raga bhupali, and probably some more ragas, i will find out, and that is enough for the moment. as for now i won't try to change the ga to komal ga, neither ni ti komal ni. that will be something for the future.....
Sure why not Hahaah you can do and experiment with whatever direction is pulling you!
I see more and more Taus (taoos) are being played and sold. Is the tuning the same as Dilruba/esraj? How about playing technique? I have played dilruba for 40 years.
yes it is played and tuned the same...
Hi Keith. I have studied dilruba for about 40 years. I totally agree with you on the machine pegs, difference in sound between the two instruments, etc. (I never played esraj but I have a friend who is a professional player) I also play sitar and wonder why more sitar players do not adopt machine tunings (Except for ovation sitars) Thanks for your videos.
Hey thats great! Wow 40 years! I play Sitar a little bit too and wondered the exact same thing. Ireally hope a Sitar maker will make one as well. I would like to hear you play Dilruba. Do you have any videos?
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 I am a 72 year old guy. I started learning Hindustani music and sitar in 1969! I used to be part of a fusion band in the 1990s. We made a few videos but none survive. I don't post things online, for privacy reasons. But I would be happy to share information with you privately, one to one via email. As I mentioned , there are many ovation or travel sitars available and nearly all have machine tuning. But very few classical sitarists use them . I don't know why. One person who may be able to shed some light on this is the maestro Purbayan Chatterjee. I may ask him. Did you study in India? Keep up the great work!

i have just received my esraj and will try tuning it. very exciting!

Great man who is not an Indian is explaining the difference between two Indian instruments
Thank you for the compliment 🙏
thank you so much! i will get an esraj soon, i fell in love with it first time i heard it in a far away country and never thought i would be able to learn to play it, now thanks to you i'm sure i will!
Thats great to hear! Yes, if you feel that connection you must pursue it. Its a very special instrument and well worth the time you put into it. THE Value will come back to you many times over hahaha. I teach online as well an recommend taking at least one lesson to get going properly. Either way all the best to you!
Do both esraj and dilruba have the same tuning?
Yes, pretty much
Is this a violin bow???
This is a Cello Bow
Thanks brother thats very helpful plz can you make more videos of tuning in ragas like in guru granth sahib there is 31 ragas and 31 mix ragas can you make videos of 31 main ragas tuning in dilruba plz brother it's a request.....❤❤❤
I want to start learning esraj. Where can I buy an esraj?
I think Monoj Kumar is a good maker !
Watched this and I've settled on the dilruba, as much as I love the liok of the esraj. Are the frets set out in a scale, or in semitones like a guitar? wondering if I have to accommodate with tuning somehow if I want to play alongside a guitar or something.
You made a good choice with Dilruba! vua-cam.com/video/pJr1zUpUSoM/v-deo.html just look here regarding your question on tuning
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 cheers mate, that video covered it really well. Really glad I found this channel, because most dilruba resources are in Hindi, and my Hindi is awful 😂.
very nice🌻🌻🌻
Thank you so much! 🙏
Thank you, Keith san, for your beautiful and amazing work!! The fusion of the Esraj and Dilruba🪷
Thank you so much Miki! It was awesome to work with you and looking forward to our next project!
Your funnel of your tar shehnai is amazing, what is the price (just the funnel) plz ?
I have no idea it was hand made for me along with the esraj so it was never itemized asa seperate price
Thanks for your clear explanations.Based on your experiences, which diameter for the first playing string and which for the resonance strings (made of steel) would you recommend for an esraj In your version?

For how long are you Playing Esraj?? Im from Kolkata and recently started learning this..❤
Hi Friend, I started learning Esraj aroun 19 years ago but its been off and on. Im studyingseriously and consistently now. Im very excited tohave a teacher now
I started following your channel from the pandemic time when I started learning esraj. I like your tutorials and I practice with your videos often. Now I am also practicing esraj regularly and I feel very happy to follow the compositions of Pt Ravishankar. Please upload more videos like these.
When you say Monoj, there are two, Monoj Sardar in Kolkata and Monoj Mondal in Santiniketan. Which maker is this esraj from? The other question, are you able to reach and play comfortably the lower notes on the second string? Can you do a video on that please?
Yes mine is from Kolkata!
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 What about my other request 🙂
Thanks for these videos! I just got my dilruba today tuned it up and started playing but my strings were buzzing. I'm guessing my bridge needs to be a little bit higher, but also afraid of the high pressure of the bridge on the strings and noticed some have a strip underneath the bridge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.😁
Hi Jonathan, Its really hard for me to say without seeing and hearing the instrument. It could be a number of factors. I give online lessons on Whatspp +84 163 798 3174
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 thanks for the reply, might check the lessons. I did see that there is a leather strip lightly visible under the main sound box skin to help support the bridge, so that helps me know there is more support.

what is the importance of sympathetic strings?
It brings more resonance to the instrument. Wider sound with a longer sustain

Hey man, I am abit disappointed.. I tarted learning esraj from you.. Now your bodies are gone and you made a course to buy the lessons. What happened, you said you wanted to give back and share but now making a business out of it.. If you're going to charge, rather give personal live lessons don't do what everyone else is doing. You're better than that.
Hey Arjuna, I’m really happy to hear that you found the videos I posted helpful. Im sorry you feel the way you do but maybe you misunderstood my message and intent. Right now, I’m working to put together comprehensive content for a full beginner’s course for Dilruba/Esraj. Unfortunately, given the amount of time/resources it is taking me to consolidate this material - recording, editing , etc., it is very difficult for me to put all of the content up completely free on UA-cam. I solely live off of the money I make doing music. The amount I am charging for the full course is not steep. It is easily accessible and affordable for virtually anyone. When I was starting out I was absolutely thrilled when I found an online course back in 2006 and even went to the UK to continue my studies. I’ve always been happy to pay my teachers for their time and am still doing so. The small money I make from anything i do online is reinvested into my own personal lessons with my Dilruba teacher.
Nothing in life is free my dude. Old mate needs to make a living.
Amazing

That's great thanks, I just got a dilruba for Christmas, it was all I ever wanted! This helped, I just need to go away and translate Ga Ma Pa into what notes those symbols stand for!
Yo should definitely get itabla pro app to tune your dilruba and to practice with tabla if you are playing Indian Classical music but even if not its great for tuning. Also I suggest to take the Dilruba beginners course 1 on my website as it goes over all the basics of left hand technique, bowing technique, exercises, tuning, how to change strings ect. keithbeber.com/courses/
Thank you for replying, I will have a look at your courses. I actually bought an estraj a few years ago in Sri Lanka, I fell in love with the sound. However it was a cheap estraj and difficult to tune and I have been looking at the dilrubas online for a while. this dilruba that I have got has got a few teething problems...the bow is dreadful and the main 4 strings were in the wrong places!! I have ordered a book and I definitely need a bit of advice and help getting it set up to 'sing' the bow is the first thing that I need to sort out so if you have any advice? It would be very much appreciated.@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088
