DOS based MP3 player - #DOScember2024
#doscember #doscember2022 #msdos #mpxplay
As per usual, my projects never go to plan, and creating this DOS based MP3 player for DOScember, lives up to that for sure. Not much works on this, but the concept is sound, as well as all the individual bits, just need to tie them together, and fix the issues
Enjoy! if you can....

I’m watching in 2025 👍🏻 good vid and a sub
I own a Zune btw. Still use it. 😉
Teesside? East Durham?
The more I listen, the more North I'm thinking.
Country Durham, nearer to Gateshead, but my accent is mild :)
15:59 wow, expertsexchange, it was a time since I last heard of that site. I used to joke it was expert-sex-change instead of experts-exchange (back when you could actually make such dummy jokes without people screaming).
Since when did dos have a windows like boot screen?
Since the version that came with Windows 9x
@ huh that’s news to me. I don’t remember this at all
Yes, DOS 7.1 came with Windows 98 as it's foundation, you can separate the Windows parts from DOS, or do what I did and just grab a premade version from the 90s from WinWorld PC
@ I’ve been meaning to fiddle with dosbox some more on my SteamDeck (in order to get controller bindings) but didn’t get further than installing Windows 3.1 since it had a game I wanted to try to run on it. Might also try 9x at one point then
Well the VGA to hdmi converter does need power as well
It was powered
@PIPERdotEXE ah, it didn't look to be powered in the footage as I saw it
10/10 with the music. Would have been 7/10 without.
Thanks man, most people seem to enjoy it, only one person doesn't haha
Try Windows CE?
Not sure that's possible, sadly
@piperdotexe I said it in jest. Because this is the OS for Zune! 😂
What laptop is that where you can use the display like that?
Not a laptop, a lapdock, like a laptop but without anything that makes it a computer
Glad there's someone out there dispelling the myth that you need a 3D printer to have something 3D printed.
That one little computer you allude to can also natively run RiscOS, which might be worth a look at even if you aren't going to put it in your Phoebe case
The SB0220 is one of those OEM versions of the Sound Blaster Live. That model and the SB0200 are the only two card versions that you can’t use modified Audigy drivers for SB Live cards. The CT4xx version cards as well as the SB0060 and SB0100 cards can.
Not sure how useful it would be, I've not played too much with Mpxplay, but Pimoroni, Adafruit, and the like, sell an iPod-like click wheel control. I don't think I can link here, but Pimoroni calls it "ANO Directional Navigation and Scroll Wheel Rotary Encoder" if you fancy trying to make your own breakout board with it.
I had seen that and wondered about it's usefulness as a navigational control, all options are on the table at this point
You probably had the zip parallel cable too in those first couple of boxes.
“Kind of into small things at the moment…don’t get any ideas” 😂
That dell dock goes to a specific series of Dell laptops. I actually bought one of those as well as the floppy and DVD drive you have there. It’s proprietarily niche but useful if you have one of the compatible laptops. 👍
Still gonna be better than an ipod and i love the idea of SBC DOS machines and possibly windows 98 and XP. Something like a raspberry pi that runs all the games from DOS up XP dx8.1 games would be absolutely insane, since my old computers are pretty much done for with capacitors needing replacing
Perhaps something like an old phone or PDA keyboard
Could do, that's good for another idea I have, though I want a simple keypad for the MP3 player idea
@@PIPERdotEXE hum well maybe you could use something like a joystick like the old PSP had
legendary
Oh man is this scuffed. With a bit of 3D printing and some thinning out this would be much thinner. Time for a part 2?
Next time you want to burn a VHD onto an SD card, just launch the command below to convert the image properly: "VBoxManage convertdd [src_file_vhd] [dest_file_img] --format RAW" (VBoxManage is in the VirtualBox software folder)
Neat that you even attempted it, and expended a great deal of effort. I do wonder if using FreeDOS would've provided less friction though. Would it be too much of a cheat to use some kind of SBC, possibly an RPi, and just run DOSBox on it?
FreeDOS likely would have been easier, starting to think I should have just switched to that, but I had my heart set on a form of MS-DOS, and sure the raspberry Pi might have been easier, but again I wanted to put this on a native x86 platform, as that's the only thing MS-DOS can run on anyway. Maybe I'll do a Pi build running DOSbian, I want to see what can be done there
Merry Christmas. An interesting video, and looking forward to your 2025!
Druaga cited. I miss that lad.
I really do too.... Miss his SSD misadventures
he's still making content, just on twitch now.
what happen last year for those who don't know ?
I seemed to have a massive brain fart and fell off the face of the Earth
@@PIPERdotEXE that happen do the best of us ;-)
It would be tremendously helpful if you added links to kicad for the pcb and source for the vortex in the description
Done
NIce project. I really enjoyed watching you work though and solve many of the issues. From a guy who used to teach Dos 5.0 back in the day it got me to thinking, this may be a project I take up in the new year (2025) as a challenge myself. Just subscribed as well, looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks man, in the end I just kept coming up against more and more brick walls, to the point I just had to pause, but we'll be back in 2025 to finish this
You mean to tell me you got a TinyLlama, and you didn't put DOSamp 0.8 on it? Yes, Nullsoft, the makers of WinAmp, also made a DOS MP3 player. This really does not whip the llama's ass ☹️
😲 DOSamp?! That sounds way better, I will be trying that for sure when I get this finished
@@PIPERdotEXE Yeah, it's not nearly as full featured as WinAmp, no UI skins or any of the bells and whistles, and it only plays MP3 format, it doesn't even do WAV, but hey that's all you're really looking for anyways huh? I hope to catch another video update sometime soon, happy holidays!
You do know that Virtualbox can use real harddisks instead of images, right? It can do so even on Windows. You also do know how to change the drive in fdisk, right? Glad you got it almost worked out regardless. :) Awesome sweater. Merry Christmas.
Almost went with that, was considering it, I thought perhaps it was more direct, but in the end it seemed like a faff... I know better now lol thanks, you too
Im glad to see I'm not the only one tilting ar windwills. Ive been on a multi-year quest to build my own mp3 player. I'm using a raspberry pi zero 2 though. Ive been struggling with input. I decided on a rotary encoder (ala iPod) from Adafruit. I'd love to see your dos mp3 player come to life.
Tbh, I have taken the hard route, mine really isn't the best way, and a Pi is the more sensible choice, but I saw there was a player for DOS and the ideas just converged lol. There's literally no reason to do it this way, but I was like, why not
Ya know I thought I saw some of these in a sixth form college, and it ran butter smooth when dragging a window around. But now you've said it didn't really survive I'm wondering what the hell I saw.
I do too lol very curious now
@@PIPERdotEXE It was almost definitely running RiscOS or whatever it's called, the screen was lovely, the box was yellow - and I remember thinking I'll love to have a play on this when I join the college, only to get terrible GCSE's and take a completely different path lol so I never got to see it again. Such as life
Love this project. So many memories from my first job as a tech at a small computer shop. I spent hours optimizing driver loading order on dos 6.22 to maximize the UMB usage and free up the lower memory to get games to run. Alas, I haven't done anything with that knowledge in so long. This little device has so much more processor, ram and storage than most of my systems up into the mid to late 90's! P.S. I also do initial design work in Illustrator. I export them as SVG into FreeCAD (some fiddle farting around required), correct the scale and then extrude and finish as desired for my 3d printer.
I'm a crazy fool, and there will likely be lots of crazy projects like this going forward haha this project really stretched what I'm capable of
Zune owner checking in. I still have my original first-gen Zune, and I'm slowly trying to overhaul it. I genuinely miss having a "dumb" MP3 player with physical buttons for distance running.
Wow, really? And it's still kicking? See I do too, been looking seriously at products made by Fiio, I suppose for the moment, my phone is fine for the bus, but it might be nice to separate the two
@@PIPERdotEXE Yeah, the battery is pretty much shot, and I let all of the smoke out of one audio channel, but it still works.
@@PIPERdotEXEshanling q1 etc are all cheap, great, work as wired or bluetooth DAC, and can run rockbox
Zune was cool, it was just too little too late when it came out.
Dell Figital Jukebox was the best handheld MP3
This would be 10/10 without the music. 7/10 as is.
Would be a heck of a lot more boring though
Still 10/10 for me and the music is fine
Music is great, this guy just doesn't know what good music is.
Or if you were really unlucky you got an ipod or a zune*
Haha yeah, on some instances I guess that could be true
What?! MS-DOS 7.1?! The latest version of MS-DOS I ever knew about was 6.22. How the heck did This come out and I just didn’t know?!
This was the version that came with Windows 98, this version just got separated from that OS, probably not 100% official
@@PIPERdotEXE Definitely not 100% official. This release was hacked together by the "China DOS Union". It's not an official Microsoft release, though the fact that it still exists means they likely didn't care too much. Personally I'd prefer to SYS a hard disk from a 98 floppy and then copy in the utilities and drivers I know I'll need.
@@sedrosken831 You don't need the China DOS Union release. You can easily build your own DOS 7.1 from Windows 95 / 98 CDs.
@@bubu5908 That’s what the back half of my initial comment was referring to.
@@sedrosken831 Also, I saw that it was under the GNU GPL license.
Hooray, another PIPER.EXE vid! Never give up, always a joy to see what you're up to. Your video productions are stellar!
Chronically underrated channel.
I'm subbed in first thirty seconds. If that didn't get me, the reminder to check on druaga1 would have!
Kind words both of you 🤓
Nice i love these retro embeded projecets
nice to see you back
Thanks man :) I don't know where I went, but glad to be back on the horse again
@@PIPERdotEXE sometimes life just gets in the way
Gotta love the 475/605 machines. Best pizza box Macs ever. My Performa 475 came from a university in Amsterdam. Bought it on eBay while back and had it shipped here to the States. Still works great, 36mb RAM, and a VRAM upgrade. Also have a ZuluSCSI installed. Great 68k machines!
Laminated tonewood. Plywood. Love my pelican pink Marlin. Like the humbucker, not the single coil pups.
What's happening to the screen is only skin deep, just the front layer of the LCD - the front polariser - is breaking down. Those lines are at 45 degrees because that's the angle of linear polarisation that the front polariser uses. The screens in the 2300c are just as rare as the PB 2300c itself. I have the Toshiba Portege 610CT which uses basically the same panel and they are now really hard to find! The one I sourced from china maybe 3 years ago has already developed vinegar syndrome / polariser breakdown too so I've got to replace the polariser on mine soon as well. It's do-able, just takes some patience to get the original polariser off and clean all the glue away. I found sticky stuff remover does a good job on the glue. The polariser film on a TFT is quite widely available and you can get adhesive and non-adhesive sheets. I just got some non-adhesive gloss linear polariser sheets and they look pretty good on a similar display I just replaced the polariser on.
Where is part 2?
Still not in existence sadly. Motivation is a problem
Bought a broken Casio midi guitar . I knew it wasn't working but I was going to refit it with a Roland midi pickup. The Casio midi electrics seem ok just the owner has taken of the midi out plug. The 9volt switch and there are just bare wires hanging about. Is it worth repairing please
really curious to know what you've done with this guitar. I want to take that cheap body and make a proper 80's shredder out of one. Only one I can find is on reverb sold in italy and it would cost me 600 bucks US which I'm NOT paying for one of these lol.
Pretty much done nothing yet lol, I will, someday, but my plan could be to discard everything other than the body which I will clean up, and then build back with better quality parts. Pretty much only got this for around £20, so not bad to build on
@@PIPERdotEXE Oh you got a steal compared to what I've found. This was my first ever electric guitar as a kid. My dream is to make it a really solid super strat with a mid boost for those 80's clean tones like Glory of Love and Purple Rain have, and obviously the distortion tones like Whitesnake and Def Leppard. I'm hoping to run across one someday. It's obviously cheap, but if you put the right work into it, you could make something REALLY cool out of it.
My power supply popped too. New RIFA sorted it out. Love the detailed video, great watch. Have to get my hands on one of the 2300s.
Are the pickups ceramic or alnico?
I bought this exact setup brand new when it came out. It was awesome.
