PowerMac G3 Unboxing

This evening; in the very first episode of About This Mac, I unbox a PowerMac G3 Blue and White and give a short tour around the beast.
hello friend, i have the same computer with the same problem on left speaker, i don't care about it because i always plug audio interface or headphones. i just want to know if Logic works smooth without any issues on unsupported OS via legacy patcher? because i saw Logic installed on your machine
While you had the Logic/Motherboard off you should change the button battery. André
Can you provide a parts list with Links please
The thing was shipped wrapped in flooring underlay! Haha never seen that before 😂
Well done! It's so much more satisfying than buying a new computer!
Hi 😊 ! I just found a 27inch 2015 5k imac on fb marketplace for 150$ (cnd $) just a small crack on screen. But is that a good deal ? And is that model very good ? I mean should i go for 2017 imac instead ? I love upgrading imac so im not sure which models doesnt allow you to upgrade 😢 * what i wanna do with the imac is simple photoshop, excel, microsoft word, streaming content like netflix/disney+/prime video/paramount, browsing the internet…
Great
What s the best gpu these can handle?
Hello, excellent tutorial! congratulations. I have a question for you: you have updated your Wifi and Bluetooth card, and I see a possibly two-pin cable connected to the card...How did you manage to make that connection? I'm asking you because I bought the same card but it doesn't come with that cable and Bluethoot doesn't work. Could that be the reason? From already thank you very much. Greetings
CAN YOU PLEASE ADD AN ITEMIZED LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU BOUGHT FOR THIS?
NVMe Upgrade!
Same issue here
I currently also have an Early 2008 3,1 Mac Pro. I have upgraded the GPU to an RX 580, (no boot screen) and the OS to Catalina. However, you have really gone above and beyond. What an outstanding, and impressive job you did to give that beast a new life. If you are still using it, awesome! If it has moved on, someone is very lucky to have it. Great job my friend. Gonna Sub to your Channel, and of course like this video!
What i7 is suitable ?
I have an iMac 27" late 2015 and I'm thinking of upgrading it just wondering what's the best CPU and NVME SSD for it. CPU: i7 6700k? & NVME: Samsung 990 Pro?
M.2 990 pro is not compatible , better use 970 pro or WD black 750
How about upgrading to MacOS Sonoma?
bron can you add the list of your items with amazon for us to buy? thanks
So why didn't you replace the old hard drive with a SSD?
HD runs the OS I think and he might have had no way to load the OS onto the SSD
probably because the hard drive on these models causes the fan to run at full speed without a special adapter
probably because its a fusion drive and after adding 1TB of nvme is there any point
@@star__shNope (since 2012!)😊
@@ljpaewai3863It’s no more à Fusion Drive!!!!
Ive broke the socket trying to install a new cpu 😢😢 dont kno what to do now😭
Nice repair did you install Sonoma on since ?
I have this same MBP and just installed Sonoma. It’s great to have the new OS. The only issue I’ve had so far is trying to watch Netflix or Hulu on via Safari. I get an error every time, so had to DL Chrome and Netflix works fine using that.
How do I get from EL Captain to Big Sur? 3,1 2008
I already have the 4 GHz i7 on mine, but I wish there was a way to use this old thing as a monitor for a modern Mac Mini.
This old thing still works like a charm 9 years later. All thou it may sound like an aeroplane trying to take off at times :)
i thought there was, i'm sure i've heard of people doing it. maybe it's another model
Hi I have a i7 7700K processor can I use that in my imac late 2015 27 inch 5k
@@demetriusstallings7831 - no. That's an LGA1151 socket CPU. Mac has an LGA1150.
@@demetriusstallings7831 unfortunately no. intel motherboard has different socket for each generation
The CPU upgrade was quiet dumb, sorry. The machine just marginally gain speed, but the max power consumption raises from 80 Watt per cpu to 150 Watt per cpu. I would have rather get lost of the spinning drives and put in some more SSDs.
nice vid. thanks for sharing. but what was a budget and is it worth it?
Why on earth did you remove the screen with the iMac standing up? It's just an unnecessary risk for no reason of the display slipping and dropping or ripping the display cable. Please anyone doing this lay it flat or put a wedge in between the stand to keep it facing upward!
I did indeed make the LinusTechTips error when doing this, I think a wedge would be the best option as laying it on its back would likely have a similar issue as having it standing up. Unless something was propping it up so its level. :)
@@aboutthismac9333 i have a late 2015 iMac 27 inch do you think you I can do something similar
@@NicVandEmZyou can and its so easy! Go get a ssd they are cheap and right now you can get 32 gigs of ram for it for 60 bucks or 20 per 8gig stick ….. you also p get a adhesive kit online for 10 dollars, its so easy
HELLO! DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE QUADRO K4000 GRAPHICS CARD IS COMPATIBLE WITH MAC PRO 3.1 2008?
I haven't used a quadro k4000 but it should work, if you have the mac edition everything is ready to go...a pc version wouldn't have boot screens (opencore is your friend in this area)
Does the imac have an NVME slot i had no idea
it has a apple introduced type I forget what it's called. But it can be adapted to NVME and is pretty fast too!
@@reginaldbowls7180 thank you so much
Nice! I’m about to do the exact same thing to a mid 27 inch mid 2015

10 year old cpu? How much did u pay for it
??
Hi! I have exactly the same poppy settings as you, I made a flash for the gtx680 video card, everything is determined, I made a bootable flash drive via opencore to install bigsure from the el capitan system, after loading the installation from the flash drive, the apple hangs and the loading bar does not even appear, I even tried to use patcher dosdue1 the same way. Turning SIP off didn't help. What is the reason I do not understand?
Have you removed the stock bluetooth card as open core won't load with that in
For anyone wondering how I got the Mac booting from NVME, I followed the method on this link: forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-nvme-support-upgrade-guide-questions.2194878/. Please note that from my experience, when booting from certain NVME SSD's, Mac OS would kernel panic after a few minutes of running. As of yet I have not worked out why.
頑張ってください!!! Keep up the good work!!!
How do you manage to install 11.5 Mac OSX in older mac 3,1. Please let me know. I have one of this collecting dust. If I can install lates osx that would save me buying a new one :D
opencore there are patching scripts online
Ok so there a guy selling one for $65.00 is that good?
is it a big difference from the 2.8ghz cpu?
Bonjour excellente votre vidéo j'aimerais connaître la référence du CPU que vous avez utilisé car il y en a tellement des xeon que je m'y perds lequel conseilleriez vous ? grand merci Hello excellent your video I would like to know the reference of the CPU you used because there are so many xeons that I get lost which one would you advise? Many thanks
Hi, the CPUs I used are Xeon 5482. Be aware you need to use the SLANZ variant of the CPU
Hello, my mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) with Mac OSX El Capitan, have: 2x2,8GHz QuadCore Intel Xeon - SSD 500Gb - RAM 10Gb at 667MHz - ATI Radeon HD2600 XT 256Mb.... One question: if I change my grafic card with the Invidia GeForce GTX 680 2Gb, is possible to upgrade at Mac OSX Sierra? Tkanks!
Hi, yes if you upgrade the graphics card it will run Sierra fine with full graphics acceleration, just be aware that a standard GTX 680 won't show a boot screen
@@aboutthismac9333 Tks !
@@riccardo.franchi The best pieces of software to get Sierra-Catalina working are the DosDude Patchers
@@aboutthismac9333 True. Patched GTX 680's are easy to find in Ebay, though; I recently bought one for around €100 and I installed Catalina via Dosdude. Everything works like charm once I reinstalled the Dosdude Post Install because the previous Sierra patch for the ATI 5870 would not let the 680 run well.
Hello, I have a MacPro3,1 and I also use Protools12 and I want to do the same upgrade. Can you make me a list of all the hardware you used and where you bought it?

hello, can you explain how hack the Boot rom?
Hi, I believe I followed this thread to mod the BootRom to get NVME boot forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-nvme-support-upgrade-guide-questions.2194878/
can i jut buy an old 6tx680 and plug it in? or does it needed to be modded
you can just plug a normal one in if you have the correct power cables but to get the boot logo you need a Mac flashed version.
What happened to your Mac pro 3,1?!
Still have it, just need to find some new uses for it
Hi I stubbled across your video awesome I still have use my 3,1 how did you get OS Big Sur🤔? Currently 10.11.6, 2x28 GHz quad (will upgrade to 3.2 GHz x5482), 20 GB memory, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB. Also, have a birthday gift M1 Max studio🤗. Thanks
Hi, I used OpenCore Legacy Patcher. there are issues with the USB 1.1 functionality on built in USB ports when running Big Sur so I'd recommend getting a USB 3 PCIE card. You'll also need to remove the stock bluetooth card as this will stop Big Sur from booting (I upgraded my bluetooth). I'd also recommend getting a Metal capable GPU as although there are now patches for non Metal GPUs, they can be quite buggy in places :)
Question i have a early 2008 and want to know if i can upgrade to big sur ?
If you have an early 2008 Mac Pro, you can get it running Big Sur, you'll likely need to remove the bluetooth and airport cards though. you can upgrade them or get USB/PCIe versions if you need wifi and bluetooth. I'd also recommend you get a metal compatible GPU if you haven't already got one as although there are patches for non compatible GPUs now, they do have issues.
Im curious as to how you made the nvidia graphics work for big sur. Ive been trying to look for drivers for my nvidia to work on my 3,1 running catalina, to no avail.
Same!
Big Sur has drivers built in for GTX 680 and other Keplar Nvidia GPUs (600-700 series)
How could you install Big Sur on that machine?
Hi, I used the OpenCore Legacy Patcher to get Big Sur running, make sure to look at the supported models section as there are a few things you need to do before you can get it working on a 3,1
@@aboutthismac9333 Can it be that my Big Sur installation on my Mac pro 2008 3.1 is not successful due to usb 1? dortania says: - Potential boot issues with built-in USB 1.1 ports (recommend using a USB 2.0 hub or dedicated USB PCIe controller) Thank you
@@txilibrist Hi, I don't believe I had boot issues related to the USB 1.1, however I would recommend you don't have any 1.1 devices plugged in when booting just in case. Did you remove the stock bluetooth and airport cards as they are what I had issues with.
Are you booting from the NVME drive , what was the hack you had to do to boot from the drive ?
Hi, here's a link to the method i used, I used the Boot ROM hack method: forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-nvme-support-upgrade-guide-questions.2194878/ It is risky though as if it goes wrong it can brick your system, so do it at your own risk
Did you have to upgrade the firmware on your system ?
Hi, I don't believe i had to do any actual firmware upgrades to get Big Sur running, I have previously had Sierra - Catalina running on it though using the DosDude patcher so they might've done some things to the firmware, but I'm not sure. I had to tweak the firmware to get it natively booting APFS I also had to tweak the BootROM to get it booting from NVME using this method: forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-nvme-support-upgrade-guide-questions.2194878/
