You know whale season's started..
Переглядів 994Рік тому
Around June each year the humpback whales migrate north along the Eastern coast of Australia to their subtropical breeding grounds and the Great Barrier Reef, before coming back down around September. Makes for pretty amazing viewing offshore in the kayak, but it's also quite terrifying. On this day they were all around- you couldn't move 100m before another whale was there to say gday. And the...

Reconsidering my life choices - 4.10am kayak surf launch
Переглядів 2512 роки тому
Part and parcel of offshore kayak fishing is the surf launch and return- probably the most nerve-wracking bit of the sport. This was mid flow on a 1.2E 8s, so not really big swell, but enough flow to be a bit of a washing machine. I was at the last of the outer breaks thinking I was as good as out, but the ocean decided I needed a drink :) Can't stress enough the importance of a good surf paddl...

When a fish tows you away from whales!

Went down south for a change of scenery, and what a way to begin the day. The whales were out in force and they made my day already- and then on top of that, a fish to bring home :) The timelapse was also a bit of a mistake actually- hit the touchscreen and it went into that mode in the madness of the fish taking me backwards.. Also, the hugest thanks to Goat Girl for giving me permission (via ...

    This is a cool video. Retitle it and you may get a few more clicks. It was randomly suggested for my page, and I'm not sure how many other pages would have also had it suggested for theirs. Your video has excellent camera quality, captures the whale several times, and I've seen less-cool videos get way more views. Side-note: how do you guys get in a little KAYAK in the OCEAN?!?! Y'all are crazy lol.

    • @fishkeen2476
      @fishkeen2476 Рік тому

      Haha thanks and I appreciate the random visit! I'm terrible with video titles- mainly just putting videos up for a record, not too fussed if it doesn't get a million views.. But happy to take title suggestions- as long as I don't have to make a funny face for a thumbnail 😅 As for the kayaking- this one's a Stealth Fisha 460- South African made kayak. The design's pretty good and they're generally pretty stable on open water. Launching and returning through the surf breaks are the sketchy bits though. Getting smacked off your kayak by a back set, in winter, before sunrise, with a cold southerly blowing.. Not recommended 😆

      @@fishkeen2476 I took Kayaking this past fall at University. I nearly drowned in a POOL! I am not made to kayak, hahaha. Long story short, we were learning how to recover after rolling and inverting ourselves, and my "partner" was supposed to keep the nose of his kayak at my side so I could grab onto it and pull myself up. Well, as we had just learned how to paddle 30 minutes prior, he misjudged his speed and instead of "gently coming to my side" he rammed the crap out of me and I got disorientated. Couldn't find my grab loop, and I somehow got my legs under me, and managed to hulk-strength my way out by ripping the skirt and launching the kayak into the air. I am 6'6" and was roughly 250 lbs. at the time, which I think is the only way I survived hahaha. I had enough kayaking that day to fill a lifetime Anyhow, I would literally title your video "Whale surprise whilst Kayaking" or something very obvious. People hate clickbait, and people enjoy surprises in videos like this, where you were doing something not expecting the company of whales. Just make it very obvious that what people read in the title, they will see in your video! Thanks for taking the consideration, I really think it will improve your views. Hope you have. good day out there in South Africa :) Lucky man!

      @@burntthetoast yikes that's a bit traumatic sounding! The great thing with these ones is they're sit-on-top as opposed to sit-in's plus we're wearing life jackets. Getting back on is kind of like getting onto a fatter surf board. I feel it's probably a lot easier than a sit-in as you don't have to worry about eskimo rolls or getting stuck upside down or anything.. Also! This is actually in Australia too btw! Me and my lack of title info again haha.

      A few k's round the corner. Shark central at the moment if it's any consolation, the sharks went for hard bodies, plastics, livies, I felt pretty lucky to get this one out past them, hence the extra nerves when this one was being difficult to grab. By this point of the morning I'd dealt with enough lol

      Fish'n'bits: All my kayak rods are 6' and a long butt just gets in the way. 20lb line on a 6-10kg or 7-13kg is perfect- if you go heavier flicking plastics and lures gets difficult.
