FWIW, One for the Road, Live Album is one of the Best Live Albums ever Recorded. Been a Kinks fan going back the very early 1980s. I lent my Daughter a Vinyl copy of that Album a few years ago, I don't think I'll ever get it back. She loves it and virtually all her friends are completely blown away. They stop by to visit her and individually just want her hear a certain song. A different song for each it seems. Great video !!!

Ray was his own worst enemy in many ways. I love The Kinks dearly but Ray is one moody sod. 🤣 Before UA-cam I'd never heard the story of their American tour but it doesn't surprise me. My mum always had this massive crush on Ray and I can see what she means because I've always been attracted to intense type men. I'm an intense type of person myself. It doesn't make a person easy to get along with!

Hey buddy, The Kinks and Van Halen are both great bands, but they’re apples and oranges. Calling any early Van Halen album stodgy… LOL That’s your opinion an a damned silly one. I’d be careful lest you alienate a lot of people. You know, damned well, that you’re in the minority in this. You Really Got Me performed by either band is something of its own. “Apples” and “Oranges.” If you are a solid Kinks fan, though, I suppose you might get resentful of covers. C’mon, they both rock and, yes, it’s Ray’s song. Van Halen borrowed it, just like everyone borrows from The Beatles…. Ray & Dave must have cried all the way to the bank. VH seriously lined their pockets with that one…

    • @timsincere

Thanks for the comment, Dave. I agree with you about both bands being great. I used to be a DJ on a US FM rock station and I played Van Halen 2-3 every morning. VH's cover of You Really Got Me was over-produced and too slick IMHO, and VH's cover of Where Have All The Good Times Gone paled in comparison to the Kinks original version. Also, I've seen Eddie and Dave play live versions of You Really Got Me & All Day And All Of The Night, and Dave is excellent, although Eddie was technically more proficient on guitar than Dave was. I highly recommend listening to Dave's lead guitar on the live version of Celluloid Heroes on the album One For The Road, and the live version of I'm Not Like Everybody Else from the 1990s. Dave Davies was very versatile and paved the way for both Heavy Metal and Punk Rock.

@@MiggySpeaksTruth Not that “anyone” gives a @#$%, but just say you’re not a Van Halen fan and you’ve got your panties in a wad because someone made covers of a band you like better. There’s positively nothing wrong with them and there’s not a damned thing wrong with good production and music being polished. What don’t you understand about apples and oranges? It means, “Two different bands playing the same song in different ways.” And let’s face it, the Davies make great music, but they are “not” great vocalists. They have a down to earth, everyman kind of sound that, although charming, lacks polish completely. This isn’t about Van Halen in the first place but he put his opinions out there for some reason and I’m starting to wonder if you’re him commenting with an alternate account. The Beatles and The Stones, Heart and The Pretenders. Why you are choosing to make it one or the other is beyond me. No two people have precisely the exact same musical taste, so don’t try and shove yours up everyone’s rears or you’ll wind up fighting constantly. Mick Jagger has a crackhead quality but we love the freak anyways. I love The Kinks but there would be a riot if they sang the national anthem much in the same way as if Neil Young were to, which is scary. They “aren’t” that kind of music, so why are you comparing. If you want to start an “I hate Van Halen” group, you’ll save a lot of money buying donuts and coffee at your meetings because they are one of the most popular and well loved bands in the world. I don’t know who has the most fans between the and The Kinks, but I must be blessed that I can enjoy them both without all this whining and b.s.. If anything, I feel sorry for you that you can’t.

    • @timsincere

The wall of distortion applied to Eddie's guitar in Van Halen's cover, overdubbed many times, and the way he plays it, is what makes it drag. It is quite different from Dave's simple, spiky, edgy guitar in the original. As a guitarist myself, albeit a bad one 😎, I can hear and see that Eddie is playing the riff as a lead part, whereas Dave plays it as a rhythm part. Dave plays a full barre chord, and pulls it off like nobody else can. Eddie is clearly a "better" guitarist than Dave, from a technical perspective, but the New York Philharmonic are all "better" musicians than the Ramones, and if they made an album of Ramones covers, it would suck!

It was not intended to be a slight against Pete. I love Pete! He's one of my top 5 favorite guitarists. Top 10 songwriters. Quadrophenia is in my top 5 album list. You may well be right, and this article certainly backs you up: ig.ft.com/life-of-a-song/rumble.html However, as a guitarist myself, who tried the speaker cone ripping technique on an old beat-up amp when I was a kid ☹️, I'm standing firm on the small-amp-driving-big-amp theory. (Don't try it at home on your expensive Fender Twin Reverb amp, kids. Distortion pedals are the way to go!) All of those early guitar amps would have used tubes/valves versus solid state components, and so there would have been a certain amount of harmonic distortion going on anyway. Tearing the speaker cone may have made it sound worse, but I don't think it was the main thing contributing to the distorted sound. By the way, you're not the first person to challenge the claim that Dave did it first. Thanks for the great comment. Cheers! 😎

Gosh, Tim, this is brilliant, and I love it! Especially the 'inside baseball' production info - and the Diane story, wow, what a revelation! The Beach Boys were my first famous celebrity band live concert. I was at the April 13th, 1968 concert at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, Florida, as a 17 year old high school junior, with a gang of classmates. Only 8 days before, Martin Luther King had been shot dead. With the tour running through the South, we read that several shows had been canceled. Also on the tour were Buffalo Springfield and Strawberry Alarm Clock (who were replaced last minute by Bobby Goldsboro). There was talk of trouble, and the night before in Jacksonville, they got it from a nervous police force who apparently got into an altercation with some of the Springfield. According to later reports, Neil Young had a seizure. My parents had to be begged to let me go - but they relented, and the show was fantastic! I barely remember the opening acts, and the Beach Boys came onstage very late, but seemed to play "all the hits" for hours and hours. We didn't know there had been a 7:00 show in nearby Sarasota, followed by our show in Tampa at 8:30 - they used to really work these guys! The absolute pinnacle of the show was "Good Vibrations" which seemed a miracle at the time. They added and subtracted layers of sound and voices over and over. I had never heard of a Theramin, of course, and we all marveled at Mike Love, who played it so gleefully! What a night, what an awesome memory! Thanks, Tim - loving this new series!

When I listen back I hear songs that recall my grade school days and every bit of my life after. By my college years I'd acquired friends who were musicians, sound engineers, and the like. It was sitting around in basements after the bar, spinning records with pro musicians/engineers/hangers on, that my lifelong devotion seemed validated by the high regard all my close music friends had for the Kinks. Browsing through NPR's site last night, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-las, who died just last month at 75. The short accompanying bio noted that she was only 15 when she and her high school friends first recorded "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" - and who didn't love that one? Apparently, she felt driven out of the music business in 1968 due to her disillusion over behind-the-scenes corruption and improper treatment. It was good to read of her enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and a second-chance career in music, decades later. You'll always be "The Leader of the Pack" to me, Mary. • @timsincere

Yes! Any excuse will do. We barely made it through the lobby in this episode, and I promise we'll be returning in the future. I agree with you, George, about Phil Spector over-egging "Let It Be", however, in fairness to him, he was tasked with the job of listening to hours and hours of takes and outtakes, in an effort to find enough useable material to make an album - which he did. Glyn Johns (the engineer/producer on the original sessions) failed to do so. (The Beatles rejected his efforts.) Even though Spector ruined many of the tracks, attempting to apply his signature sound, the Fab Four were ultimately happy with his selections, and edits. Even Sir Paul, for the most part. Spector's undeniable genius was his ability to create a so-called, "Wall of Sound" using a live band/orchestra, versus what The Beatles wanted, which very different. He also struggled later on, in his endeavor to produce The Ramones, ultimately draining the vitality from their recordings. Like Mary Provost, who couldn't cope when the talkies came, he had his time to shine, but it faded away And, what a monster the man was 😎 I'm working on a new Sincere TV episode right now, where Phil is referenced. If I hadn't already been exposed to your kind heart, Tim, I would have felt a twinge of sarcasm in this one! But of course not, it's another slice of Canadian/American rock history - the band being Canadian and their money American. This was fun! Riff rock it surely is, but my wife and I had signed up for the 1973 Summer concert series sponsored by Radio 104 at the ornate old Warner Theater in Washington DC - each show was on a Friday night and tickets were $1.04. "Up and Coming" acts were featured and we saw Tom Petty touring behind ""Break Down", City Boy, The Tubes, and among others, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Radio 104 had been playing their first album all week. The band played every cut straight through, opening with "Gimme Your Money, Please". They were loud, clean, and crunchy - I remember the whole stage seemed to bounce up and down with them. The encore was "American Woman" and Randy played a long, smooth and snakey lead over the riff. Our enthusiasm waned over a short time, but we have great memories of that first live show! Thanks!

Wow! What a brilliant series of shows. I bet it was amazing to be there. You have some great stories, George. The Age of Rock was a great era for live shows, even though it may not have aged as gracefully as the previous age of Sixties Pop. I've not seen any of those bands perform live, but I remember playing City Boy's biggest hit, "5-7-0-5" when I was a DJ on Britain's biggest pirate radio station. It was incredibly radio friendly, just like all of Tom Petty's hits, and BTO too. Punk rock came along in the UK and pulled the rug out from under bands like BTO, City Boy, Led Zeppelin, etc., but Tom Petty survived - probably because of the quality of the songs. It's good to have a periodic reset, otherwise we'd still be listening to Pat Boone!
