[4K] Where Will This Small Lane Beside Guan Yin Temple Lead To? | Penang Stewart Lane POV Walk

:: How it feels walking like a local in Penang, Malaysia ::
Have you ever wondered where does the small lane beside Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang will lead you to? Stewart Lane (Malay: Lorong Stewart) remains as a mysterious tiny lane to many as seldom one will drive through there due to the insignificant passage value (there are much better and wider roads to use besides Stewart Lane), much less walking through it on foot. Well, I am curious enough to finally explore it to see what lies along this mysterious lane, sometimes known as Kuan Yin Teng Au (translation: behind the Goddess of Mercy temple) by the local Hokkiens

so, the lesson from the video is that there's no nightlife in george town, penang. got it. I had the feeling that this was the case. After a week staying here (04/27/2024) I haven't seen any signs of nightlife, been going to bed by 10 pm. simply boring.

Thanks for watching!! Siam Road is neither a major linking road in Penang, nor a popular road with huge historical significance, but it has one special trump card in its hand - the wildly popular push-cart selling Char Koay Teow at its very roadside, which is known to accumulate queues even before the stall opened. Now, it has its own shop, which you can see has been bookmarked in this video

Thanks for watching! Sleeping Lion Suites, what a name. I mean, how did they even decide to put that name into a hotel? To be honest, I wasn't putting a high expectation towards a hotel with such a weird name, and priced rather affordably. But since it is so new, I thought that it might be worthwhile to try it out. Afterall, I couldn't resist it's central location towards the places I wanted to visit during my trip there. So what do you think of it? Convincing enough for you to try out "Sleeping Lion Suites"?

Thanks for watching!! Lebuh Armenian is easily one of the most recognizable heritage street in Penang but as a local, I seldom have the urge to visit during the afternoon due to the massive crowd and of course, Penang's unforgiving-ly hot weather. If you're looking for souvenirs then by all means, visit during daytime, you will find shops after shops selling souvenirs around the vicinity, but if you can, come over during night time when it is less busy to appreciate the more serene side of Armenian. Just, beware, of rogue electric scooters.. They come out in numbers after dark

Thanks for watching! In this video today, I'm strolling through Nagore Square, which is a popular stretch of prewar houses revamped for modern cafe's and entertainment outlets. If you're looking for old world vibes but new world cuisines and drinks in Penang, this is a perfect place to be... Also, since I am already there, why not extend the walkaround until New World Park, which is literally just next door? Unlike Nagore Square, New World Park is a fairly new building, but the overload of hawker food there makes it worth a visit (and a pocket-friendly place for dinner too)

Thanks for watching! Today I'm heading over to Argyll Road, which is one of the roads intersecting into Penang road, with low to moderate traffic, filled with boutique hotels, heritage buildings, and of course, the famous Roti Canai Jalan Argyll which starts operating early in the morning to satisfy your Roti Canai craving. The connection between Argyll Road and 'mamak food' doesn't end there though, because on that very site that The George is standing today, was an open carpark with an even more famous mamak restaurant beside it. A lot of locals still miss that small restaurant fondly known as Ali, which was a hangout spot for patrons - who some stay until wee hours!

Thanks for watching! The Hokkien name for this street, Thai Gu Au, rather means 'behind where the cows are slaughtered'.. Kind of odd, right? My best guess as a local is, perhaps it has some connection with the history of being a Malay township in the past, which ties to their tradition of slaughtering cows during Hari Raya Korban. I might be wrong though, but Lebuh Melayu as a modern street is rather quiet especially in the mornings, it can be an exploration space for tourists who hunts for unique/hidden photo spots, or locals who crave for a nice plate of Tiger Char Koay Teow, which happens to tuck inside the left kopitiam which you can see in the video at 6:14

Thanks for watching! It's a free-an-easy Friday for me, so without much thought, off I went to Van Praagh Night Market in Penang again. The wide selection of street food and relatively inexpensive prices is such a no brainer, even for us Penangites, we routinely need to take a break from all the fast food and mall restaurants which have increasingly crept into locals' culture. Another plus is that you can actually dine-in there (who likes dishwashing activities after dinner, right?), if you don't mind the open-air space, loud traffic noises from nearby vehicles (the market is along the stretch of a road after all), and the unmistakable sound of generators powering the stalls which is a staple for most 'Pasar Malam' in Penang!

Thanks for watching! After weeks of KL content, I'm now back again to Penang's heritage places. Lebuh Acheh is kind of unique because the English version of its name is Acheen Street, which, is kinda hard to grasp even for a Penangite himself. That aside, the actual place is no less unique, because in the midst of Chinese heritage sites like Khoo Kongsi and Yap Kongsi, lies an Acehnese heritage site - the iconic Acheen Street Mosque. This mix makes Lebuh Acheh such an intriguing place to visit and stroll around, especially with its close vicinity to Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Canon. A significant row of prewar houses have been modernized into a forward school, but you can still find some traditional Chinese offices there, and even a fine dining restaurant tucked within a heritage lot!

Thanks for watching! In this video, I am walking through the heart of Bukit Bintang from Jalan Alor, I can say that there's no better time to take a good walk and film this, because my stomach is super full with all the good stuffs from Jalan Alor; barbequed chicken wings, seafood, beer, you name it. Without knowing it, it was already past 1am and many restaurants were preparing to close, but the crowd sure was relentless. Many are still walking about, trying to catch the very last bits of Bukit Bintang midnight (or I should say early morning) atmosphere before calling it a day

Thanks for watching! My upload today is slightly different from my regular ones; yes, instead of my regular videos shot in Penang, this round I am doing it in KL. Of course, KL is vastly different from Penang be it in terms of crowd, infrastructure and atmosphere, it is as if the city never sleeps. Well, good for me! This video is out here out of my guilty pleasure of hunting for midnight food, so here I am, strolling out past midnight from my hotel towards Jalan Alor, which is a super-dense stretch of what I considered to be upper end street food. But hey, really can't beat the atmosphere of everybody still out and about looking for entertainment or food past midnight!

Instead of walking videos, let me drive you around the roads of Penang with today's video, taking you to surrounding areas of Dato Keramat. I must say that Dato Keramat is unique for its small and relatively narrow roads, yet super essential for connecting road users from areas like Air Itam to the heart of town e.g. Komtar. In fact, the video starts along Jalan Air Itam, before it eventually turned into Jalan Dato Keramat after a major traffic light. Looking out from a car window along these roads can be kind of nice, as you can catch a glimpse of architectures which are fairly old (but not old until the prewar era), and even pass by the walls of the famous 'penjara' (prison) of Penang

Thanks for watching! Today we will be walking over to Chulia Street in Penang, which has been (or perhaps, will always be) the most popular street in Penang among western tourists. There has always been a number of small, private bars along the stretch, and fairly recently, bigger names like Gravy Baby started to build their presence there as well. Quite a good place to chill at night, not hard to locate good street food nearby, and if you stay there, it is easy to access to nearby heritage spots during daytime like Goddess of Mercy temple and such. Also another interesting fact: Chulia Street is a favorite among locals who are looking for hardware shops

Thanks for watching! Today I'm bringing you footage from night walk around Solaria Square and Summer Skye, which you can simply think of as the 2 condominium complexes (with commercial shops) closest to Penang International Airport. Being close to Sungai Ara which is a rather upscale neighborhood in southern island, these 2 are a favorite hangout place among the locals there, but still remain relatively quiet at night and not overcrowded with tourists. Majority of the shops have closed by 10pm plus like what you see in this video, dinner or coffee are still accepting customers though, but if you want more choices or shop other retails, between 7-8pm is a better time
